Broke Down on the BA, 169 or the IDL?

Tulsa has its own names for some highways, and it helps to use them when you call. The Broken Arrow Expressway, or "the BA," runs southeast out of downtown. In ODOT's 2011 counts, US-169 was the city's busiest freeway, heaviest between 51st and 61st streets. Downtown sits inside the Inner Dispersal Loop, the "IDL," which ties into almost every highway in town.

Farther out, the Creek Turnpike curves around the south and east sides through Jenks and Broken Arrow. I-44 heads off as the Turner Turnpike toward Oklahoma City and the Will Rogers Turnpike toward Missouri. I-244 crosses the Arkansas River right by downtown.

Tell us the road, your direction and the nearest exit or street. We lock your price by text, then send the nearest available partner. A dead battery in a Utica Square lot gets a jump start. A blown tire on the BA gets a spare if you have one, or a tow if you don't.

Spring storms

May Rain and Flooded Streets: What Not to Do

May is usually Tulsa's wettest month. Spring and early summer storms bring big hail, strong wind and sometimes tornadoes. The city built one of the most extensive flood control systems in the country after serious floods. Streets still flood in a hard storm.

  • Don't drive into water across a road. The National Weather Service says 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars, and 2 feet can carry away SUVs and trucks.
  • Never go around a barricade. The road under the water may be gone.
  • If the car stalls in water, get out and to higher ground if you can do it safely. Call 911 if you can't.
  • Once the water is down, don't try to restart a flooded engine. Call for a tow to a shop.

On the shoulder, turn your hazards on. Oklahoma's Bernardo-Mills Law tells passing drivers to move over, or slow down if they can't, for a stopped car with flashing lights and for the wrecker that comes to load it.

Winter in Green Country

Cold Snaps and Summer Heat

Tulsa winters are mostly mild, but not always. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Tulsa International show about 70 nights a year at or below freezing and close to 10 inches of snow. On about 8 days a year, it stays below freezing all day. Those are the mornings batteries quit and cars slide into ditches.

Summer brings the opposite. The same normals show about 66 days a year at 90°F or hotter. Heat drains weak batteries too, and it's rough on tires that are already worn. If you're stuck in the heat, wait in the shade or somewhere cool. We text you your driver's name and photo, and you can follow the truck on a map.

Tulsa questions

Questions Tulsa Drivers Ask

My car stalled in a flooded street. Can you tow it now?

Not while the water is still up or moving. Get yourself safe first. Once the water drops and the car can be reached from the road, a partner can tow it. Don't try to start it before then.

I broke down on the Creek Turnpike. What should I tell you?

Your direction and the nearest interchange or town, like Jenks or Broken Arrow. If you can see a mile marker, read it to us.

A storm turned my yard to mud and the car sank in. Can you pull it out?

Usually, yes. A winch-out works when the truck can park on solid ground, like the street or the driveway, and reach the car with its cable. Tell us how far the car is from the pavement. If it's too far in, we'll tell you before anyone heads out.

Can you tow my car from Broken Arrow to a shop in Tulsa?

Yes, that's a local tow. Tell us the shop, and your texted price covers the trip. If the shop is closed, ask about dropping the car at home instead.

What if the bill is higher than the text?

Then you pay the texted price. The price is locked before we send anyone. That's one of the promises in our Stay-With-You Promise.

Roadside help in Tulsa, OK

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Tulsa

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Tulsa drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Tulsa Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
