Car Towed in Tulsa? Where to Look First, From City Streets to the Turnpikes

In Tulsa, where your car went depends on who towed it. Start by entering your VIN in Oklahoma's Stored Vehicle Search. A Tulsa Police tow from a city street goes to a lot the city contracts with, inside city limits. The Turner, Will Rogers and Creek Turnpikes have their own Highway Patrol troops, and state law has troopers call the nearest licensed wrecker. So that yard depends on where you stopped. Call the right agency before you drive anywhere.

Who towed your car? Start with where it was

You walk back to where you left the car, and the spot is empty. Before you call anyone, think about where it was sitting. In Tulsa, that tells you who to ask first.

Was the car in a nearby town like Broken Arrow or Jenks? Call that town's police instead. Did a trooper handle a breakdown on a free highway? Try the Highway Patrol's Tulsa troop, Troop B, at 918-627-3881.

If nobody has a record of a tow, report the car stolen.

How do I search for my car by VIN?

Oklahoma's Department of Public Safety runs a Stored Vehicle Search. You type in your full VIN, and it looks for an impounded vehicle. Service Oklahoma's impound page links to it under "Locate My Vehicle."

Your VIN is on your insurance card. If the search comes up empty, call the agency from the table above.

What if Tulsa Police towed it?

Tulsa Police policy says officers impound cars only when necessary. When they do, the car goes to a storage facility the City of Tulsa contracts with. The city's wrecker bid, issued in December 2025, requires those impound lots to sit inside Tulsa city limits.

For every impound, the officer turns in a Tow-In Report to the Records Section. It even lists what was left inside. So the department knows where your car went.

Call the non-emergency line at 918-596-9222. The department's contact page lists citizen inquiry hours as Monday to Friday, 8 to 5. The department directory on that page also lists a towing line, 918-438-0288. Ask which lot holds your car and when you can come.

Why do Tulsa officers tow cars?

The policy lists cases where officers must impound. These are the ones that catch people off guard:

  • The car was marked for tow and left in the same spot on a city street for more than 24 hours.
  • The driver was arrested, and the car would block traffic, or the lot owner asked for it to go.
  • After a crash, the driver went to jail or the hospital and couldn't agree to leave the car.
  • An officer had reason to believe the car had gone uninsured for at least 90 days.
  • The registration, paper tags included, was expired more than 90 days.
  • The car was reported stolen, then found, and the owner couldn't come get it in time.

What if there's a hold on it?

An investigative hold starts at ten days, and investigators can extend it. Once it's confirmed, only the assigned investigator or a supervisor can lift it. Ask which unit placed it.

A no-insurance hold works differently. You can get the car back by showing the lot proof of insurance. Or you can take it without insurance, as long as it's towed or hauled away, not driven on a public road. Either way, you need proof you own it.

What if the tow was a mistake?

The city's wrecker bid lets the Chief of Police, or a designee, have the contractor waive or reduce towing and storage fees. That covers a tow proved to be in error, storage that ran too long by mistake, or fees the city decides are a hardship. Ask Tulsa Police.

Could it be on Tulsa's parking ticket Tow List?

When a car has two or more unpaid parking citations, the Municipal Court clerk mails the registered owner a hearing notice. A municipal judge can then declare the car a public nuisance. If the tickets stay unpaid, the car goes on the city's Vehicle Tow List.

A car on that list can be towed or booted at any time. To get it back, you'll owe the tickets, the late fees, and the towing, storage or boot charges. Tell the City Cashier the car was towed or booted to get the release steps. Pay at either place:

  • Court Cashier, 600 Civic Center: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Closed from noon to 1 p.m.
  • City Hall, 175 E. 2nd St.: Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The hearing notice goes to the address on your state registration. If you moved and never updated it, you may never see that letter.

What if it was towed off a turnpike?

Oklahoma's turnpikes have their own Highway Patrol troops. Near Tulsa, that's Troop YB on the Turner Turnpike toward Oklahoma City, Troop XA on the Will Rogers toward Missouri and Troop XE on the Creek Turnpike.

Here's why the lot can be different. State law, 47 O.S. 955, tells troopers to call the licensed wrecker located nearest to the car. They can rotate calls among licensed wreckers within a reasonable radius. So a turnpike tow goes to the yard of whichever wrecker got that call. That may not be the lot Tulsa Police use.

Ask the troop for the wrecker company's name, phone number and yard address. Then call the company before you go.

Can I pick my own wrecker if I'm still with the car?

You can ask. Under the same law, a trooper who calls a different wrecker than the one you asked for, without your OK, faces discipline. The exceptions are hazardous conditions, an arrest, a crash where you can't take charge of the car, and a felony search warrant. So if you already called for help and a trooper stops, say who's coming. If you're stuck in a live lane or anyone is hurt, call 911 first.

What if it was towed from a parking lot?

Say your car vanishes from an apartment lot overnight. Under 47 O.S. 954A, a property owner can have a licensed Class AA wrecker remove a car left there without permission. A car parked there for 48 hours or more can count as abandoned too. Before the tow, the property owner and the wrecker driver must fill out a state Tow Request and Authorization Form.

The wrecker sends the original form to the Department of Public Safety. A copy goes to the police in the city where the lot is, or to the county sheriff if the lot is outside any town. Inside Tulsa, that's Tulsa Police.

The law also sets a mail clock. Within three business days, the wrecker asks the state for the owner's name and address. Within seven days of hearing back, it must mail you a notice of where the car is, by certified mail. If it skips those steps, you don't have to pay for storage.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission sets the most a wrecker can charge for these tows. If the bill looks wrong, file its Nonconsensual Tow Rate Complaint form with a copy of the invoice. Its number is 405-522-0131.

Could it have been repossessed?

If you're behind on a car loan, check that too. Under 47 O.S. 965, a wrecker that repossesses a car for the lender must tell local police or the county sheriff within two hours. The report includes the tow company's name, address and phone. So Tulsa Police may know about it. Your lender will too.

What do I bring to the lot?

Once law enforcement has no hold on the car, Service Oklahoma says to bring one of each:

  • Proof you own it. A title in your name, a current title or registration from Oklahoma, another state or a tribe, or a verification from the agency that towed it.
  • Photo ID. An Oklahoma driver license or ID card, another state's license, or another state or federal photo ID.
  • Proof of insurance showing the car's VIN. The policy can be in someone else's name, and a card on your phone is fine. An affidavit of non-use also counts, but then the car can't be driven off the lot.

Can't go yourself? Someone else can pick it up with a notarized letter from you. The letter must give the car's year, make, model and VIN. They bring the same proofs.

Need your things out first? After a police-ordered tow, state law says the wrecker must release your personal property to the registered owner. It's free during the normal business hours the Corporation Commission sets. The keys, the spare tire and its tools stay with the car.

Why should I move fast?

Storage keeps adding up while the car sits, and unclaimed cars get sold. The city's wrecker bid lists 3,630 impounded vehicles and 1,103 vehicles sold in 2024. Our guide to Oklahoma impound auctions explains the lien steps before a sale.

Does Sentinel do impounds in Tulsa?

No. Sentinel doesn't do impounds or private property tows. We can't look up your car, release it or pay the lot. Our part starts once the car is yours again.

A car that sat in a yard may not start. A jump start at the gate may get it going. If you signed an affidavit of non-use, or the car is damaged, a car tow can take it from the lot to your home or a shop.

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. Your price is locked by text before anyone is sent, and we check on you by text until your driver gets there. That's our Stay-With-You Promise. Where is the Tulsa Police impound lot?

Tulsa Police send impounded cars to a lot the city contracts with, inside city limits. Call 918-596-9222, or the towing line in the police directory at 918-438-0288. Confirm the lot before you go.

My car got towed on the Creek Turnpike. Who do I call?

Call Highway Patrol Troop XE at 918-355-9069. Troopers call the nearest licensed wrecker, so ask for the company's name and yard address. Then call the yard before you drive over.

Do I need insurance to get my car out of impound in Tulsa?

You need proof of insurance with the car's VIN, or an affidavit of non-use. The insurance doesn't have to be in your name. With the affidavit, the car has to be towed or hauled off the lot, not driven.
