What Moves a Tow Price Near Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City

Near Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City, the trip to your shop moves a tow price more than anything else. The lake sits in northwest OKC, right along Lake Hefner Parkway. That parkway alone runs about 7 miles, from I-44 up to Memorial Road. Where the car is stuck, what broke and what you drive set the rest. You get one price by text before anyone is sent.
Where does "near Lake Hefner" start and stop?
The City of Oklahoma City draws the lake between NW Grand Boulevard and Hefner Road. Side to side, it runs from Lake Hefner Parkway over to MacArthur Avenue. The water covers 2,500 acres. The city also lists a 9-mile paved trail for walking, jogging and cycling.
That's a big place to be stranded in. The city lists boat docks, fishing docks, picnic areas and playgrounds. There's a softball field, a soccer field, a model airplane field and a golf course with a pro shop. So "I'm at Lake Hefner" doesn't tell a driver much. Name the spot, like the golf course or the boat docks, and the closest road you can see. Then share your pin from your phone.
The parkway runs along the lake's east shore. Northwest Expressway joins it near the south end.
Why do the miles matter so much out here?
Each tow is really two trips. First, your partner drives out to you. Then the truck hauls your car to the address you give. You can't pick where the nearest free partner is. You can pick the second trip.
The parkway's mileposts show why that choice matters. The Britton Road and East Wharf Drive exit sits 4.3 miles up from I-44. Hefner Road is at 5.3. So a car that quits by the East Wharf rides over 4 miles of parkway before it even reaches I-44. If your mechanic is downtown, the truck keeps going from there, on I-44 and then I-235.
Two drivers can stall at the same exit and get different prices. One picks a shop close to the lake. The other wants a regular mechanic down in Norman. The second car rides much farther on the truck bed, and the price follows the trip.
Which parkway cross street should you give dispatch?
Use the cross street you just passed or the one you can see. The table runs from south to north, with the miles counted up from I-44.
| Cross street | Miles from I-44 | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| I-44 | 0 | The south end of Lake Hefner Parkway. |
| NW 50th Street | 1.1 | Just north of the I-44 interchange. |
| Northwest Expressway (SH-3) | 1.8 | The expressway splits off to the west here. |
| NW 63rd Street | 2.4 | Southbound exit and northbound entrance only. |
| Britton Road and East Wharf Drive | 4.3 | The East Wharf exit. |
| Hefner Road | 5.3 | The city names it as one edge of the lake. |
| NW 122nd Street | 6.4 | The last cross street before the turnpike. |
| Kilpatrick Turnpike east | 6.9 | Northbound exit and southbound entrance. |
| Kilpatrick Turnpike west and Memorial Road | 7.1 | Where the Lake Hefner Parkway name ends. |
The 63rd Street ramps trip people up. Heading north, you can get on there, but you can't get off. If you passed 63rd going north, your next way off is Britton Road.
North of Memorial Road, the freeway goes on to NW 164th Street, but it's no longer called Lake Hefner Parkway. Always give your direction. A truck can't cross the median, so the wrong side sends your driver the long way around.
Is your car in a lot, on the grass or on the shoulder?
The spot changes the gear and the work. One city rule helps a lot here. At city lakes, you may drive and park only on lake roads and parking lots.
- A lake parking lot. It's flat, paved and open. That's the easiest place to load a car or give a jump start. Say which lot you're in and what you can see from it.
- Off the pavement. You pulled onto the grass by the shore, and now the wheels just spin. That breaks the lake rule, and soft ground makes the job harder. If the car sits close to the pavement, a winch-out can pull it back onto solid ground.
- The parkway shoulder. Traffic moves fast right next to you. Your driver needs room to park the truck and load safely. Turn your hazards on and stay buckled in.
If anyone is hurt or your car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.
What if your car dies near closing time?
City lake hours are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. People with a city permit who are boating or fishing can stay at other hours. Everyone else should plan to be gone by 11.
Say your battery dies in a lake lot after an evening walk on the trail. Call right away, and don't plan to leave the car overnight. Tell dispatch you're at the lake and that it closes at 11 p.m. A dead battery in an open lot is a short job. If the car won't crank at all, give the shop address on the same call.
Does the May Avenue bridge work change a Northwest Expressway tow?
It can, if you break down inside it. The City of Oklahoma City is replacing the May Avenue bridge over Northwest Expressway, together with ODOT. Work started on May 26, 2026, and the city calls it a two-year project. The old bridge comes out, and a diverging diamond interchange takes its place.
The city told drivers to expect lane closures, narrowed lanes and shifting traffic on both roads. It closed the northbound May Avenue ramp when work started. The southbound ramp closes when crews need it. Since June 18, May Avenue traffic at the expressway has used a temporary asphalt detour. The city said a temporary traffic signal would control that crossing for the rest of the work.
Narrow lanes and missing shoulders change how your driver can park and hook up. If you stall in the work zone, say so. Name the closest ramp and the way you were headed. The city posts timelines and traffic changes on vision.okc.gov.
What else moves the price near the lake?
- What went wrong. Headlights left on during a long walk? That's often a jump start, not a tow. Tell dispatch what the car does when you turn the key.
- What you drive. Sentinel handles cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups. All-wheel drive and low cars need a flatbed and more care to load.
- A boat on the hitch. The lake has boat docks, slips and dry storage. If your pickup quits while pulling a boat, say so first. Sentinel handles light-duty vehicles only, so the boat and trailer need their own plan.
- Where it's going. Home, a shop near the lake or a mechanic across the metro. If the car won't move at all, that's a car tow, and the address you give sets the trip.
Why is a police tow or a lot owner's tow billed differently?
Not every tow near the lake is one you asked for. Oklahoma calls it a nonconsensual tow when a car is moved without the owner's consent. That covers police clearing a car after a crash. It also covers a property owner removing a car parked without permission.
State law gives the Oklahoma Corporation Commission the power to set rates for nonconsensual tows and storage. The Commission also handles complaints about those bills. You send its complaint form with a copy of the wrecker invoice. The Department of Public Safety licenses wrecker services, but it says it does not regulate their fees.
A tow you call for works another way. With Sentinel, you see the price and say yes before a truck is sent. Sentinel doesn't do impounds or private-property tows. If your car was taken from a lot, start with our OKC impound guide. If police had it impounded, the state's online search can find it by VIN.
How does Sentinel set your price near Lake Hefner?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, and we don't own any trucks. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. Tell us where the car is, what it's doing, what you drive and where it should go. We lock your price by text before dispatch. If the driver finds a different job on arrival, we text a new price first, and you choose. We stay with you by text until help arrives. Read the Stay-With-You Promise or see how it works.
Your driver's name, photo and truck come by text, so you can track your truck from the lakeshore. For Edmond, Norman and the rest of the metro, see our Oklahoma City towing page.

Lake Hefner Tow Price Questions
Is a tow from Lake Hefner to downtown OKC a long tow?
It isn't a long-distance tow, but it's a real trip. From the East Wharf, the parkway alone runs 4.3 miles to I-44. Downtown is past that, off I-235. Name your shop when you call, and your texted price covers that trip.
My car won't start in a Lake Hefner lot and the lake closes at 11. What do I do?
Call as soon as it fails. City lake hours run 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless you hold a permit and are boating or fishing. Say which lot you're in. If only the battery is dead, a jump start may get you home.
I stalled on Northwest Expressway near the May Avenue work. What do I say?
Say you're in the May Avenue bridge work zone, which way you were headed and the closest ramp. Lanes there are narrowed, so the driver needs to know where to stop. If you're in a live lane, call 911 first.
Police had my car towed after a crash near the lake. Who sets that bill?
That's a nonconsensual tow. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission handles rates and complaints for those tows. Sentinel doesn't do police tows or impounds. If the released car won't drive, we can tow it from the lot to your shop.
