Tow truck help in Wichita

Towing in Wichita, From Kellogg to the Turnpike

Wichita sits at the junction of I-35 and US 54, and its freeways are where a breakdown feels worst. Tell us which road you're on and which way you were going. A vetted local partner takes the job, with your price locked by text first.

Kellogg Avenue

US 54 and US 400 run together as Kellogg, the city's main east-west road. It has interchanges with I-235, I-135 and I-35. Say which one you're closest to.

I-135 through the middle

I-135 runs north and south through the city. A flood canal runs between its lanes. If you stall, don't try to cross on foot. Stay in the car with your belt on.

The I-235 bypass

I-235 loops around the north, west and south sides and meets I-135 at both ends. K-96 shares it for a stretch in the north. Give the nearest exit.

The Kansas Turnpike

I-35 is the Turnpike here. It enters from the south, runs up the southeast edge and leaves through the east side. I-135 begins at its interchange in south-central Wichita.

K-96 around the northeast

After leaving I-135, K-96 swings around the northeast side and ends at Kellogg in the east. Give us the nearest exit or cross street.

Broadway and 47th South

US 81 comes in from the south as Broadway, turns onto 47th Street South, then joins I-135. A dead battery at a Broadway light is usually a jump start.

South-central Kansas weather

Wichita Heat Is Hard on Cars

Snow isn't the main threat here. Heat is. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Wichita show about 65 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter, and July highs near 93. The high tops 100 degrees on about a dozen days in a typical year.

That heat wears on cars in a few ways:

  • Batteries. Heat breaks them down quietly all summer. Then one fails in a parking lot after work. Try a jump before a tow.
  • Cooling systems. If the gauge climbs on Kellogg at rush hour, pull off and shut the engine down before it boils over. Don't open a hot radiator cap.
  • Tires. Hot pavement is rough on worn tires. A blowout on I-235 needs a safe spot before anyone changes it. A partner can do a tire change once you're out of traffic.

Winter is short but real. The station averages about 13 inches of snow and about 103 nights at or below freezing. Arctic air can push the temperature below zero now and then.

Hail, wind and high water

Spring and summer storms here can bring large hail. Wind averages 13 mph, and tornadoes have hit the area more than once, including near Andover in 1991.

The Arkansas River flooded the city many times before the Big Ditch was built. In 1944 it flooded three times in eleven days. Never drive into water over the road.

Kansas move-over law

Kansas law says that when you come up on a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights on, you move to a lane that isn't next to it if you have two or more lanes and it's safe. If you can't, slow down. The same duty applies to stopped highway work vehicles with flashing lights.

Read K.S.A. 8-1530 on the Kansas Revisor of Statutes site. Give every flashing light room. It could be someone like your driver.

Questions

Wichita Towing Questions

My car overheated on Kellogg. Do I need a tow?

Maybe not. Let it cool with the engine off. If it's leaking coolant or the gauge jumps right back up, a tow to a shop is the safer call. We text the price before anyone is sent.

Do you cover the Kansas Turnpike near Wichita?

Call from anywhere on it and give us the direction and nearest exit. If a partner covers your stretch, we lock your price and send them. If not, we tell you right away.

Can you tow me from Derby or Andover into Wichita?

Yes. Tell us the shop or address you want. Your texted price covers the trip you describe, and nothing extra is added without your OK.

Can my family see where I am while I wait?

Yes. Give us one number and we text them your location and when the truck should arrive. That's part of our Stay-With-You Promise.

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Wichita

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Wichita drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Wichita Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
