Long Straight Miles on I-70 and the Turnpike

Kansas is served by two main Interstates, I-70 and I-35. I-70 runs just over 424 miles from the Colorado line near Kanorado to Kansas City, through Colby, Hays, Salina, Junction City, Topeka and Lawrence. The Kansas Turnpike is a 236-mile toll road from the Oklahoma border through Wichita, Topeka and Lawrence to Kansas City, and it carries I-35 and part of I-70.

The state changes as you cross it. West of about US 83, the climate turns semi-arid. Summers there run very hot, and winters swing between warm and very cold, with chinook winds that can lift a western Kansas winter day into the 80s. The eastern two-thirds is more humid and gets more rain.

Spring and early summer bring the state's roughest weather: supercell storms, very large hail, flash flooding and straight-line winds. After one passes, you might be facing a flat tire, a car that stalled in high water, or one that needs a tow.

Kansas weather by the numbers

Snowfall ranges from about 5 inches a year on the southern fringe to about 35 inches in the far northwest.

Road conditions and closures are on KDOT's KanDrive map.

Kansas law

What Kansas Law Says About Stopped Vehicles

Under K.S.A. 8-1530, drivers approaching a stopped emergency vehicle that's showing its signals, on a road with at least two lanes their way, must move to a lane that isn't next to it when that's possible and safe. Otherwise they must slow down and pass with caution. K.S.A. 8-1531 does the same for highway work vehicles with flashing lights. Neither section names tow trucks or broken-down cars, so don't count on traffic slowing for you. Get as far off the pavement as you can before you call.

A storm is coming and my car just died. What should I do?

If there's a tornado warning, get to shelter first and deal with the car after. Call us once the warning is over, tell us where you left the car, and we'll look for a partner who can get to it.
