Towing in Winnipeg, From the Perimeter to Portage and Main

Winnipeg sits at the bottom of the Red River Valley, and the land is about as flat as it gets. That makes the roads easy to read and the wind hard to escape. Here are the big routes, and what to do if your car quits on one. When you call, tell us which road and which direction you were heading.

The Perimeter Highway (PTH 100 and 101)

The Perimeter is a ring of about 90 km around the city. PTH 100 is the south half and the official Trans-Canada bypass. PTH 101 is the north half. It's a four-lane divided road, but not a true freeway. Some crossings are interchanges, and some are still traffic lights. If you stall near a signal, like the ones at St. Anne's Road or McGillivray Boulevard in Oak Bluff, turn your hazards on and stay belted in. Cross traffic is the danger there.

The Trans-Canada through town

Highway 1 either runs east and west right through the city or loops around it on the Perimeter. Say which one you're on. "Highway 1" alone can mean two very different spots, and the answer changes which partner we send.

Pembina Highway south

Inside the city, PTH 75 is Pembina Highway, also Route 42. It runs 107 km south to Emerson, the busiest Canada and U.S. border crossing on the Prairies. Expect heavy traffic. If you break down on the shoulder, get as far right as you can and keep your door closed on the traffic side.

The big city routes

Bishop Grandin Boulevard, Kenaston Boulevard, Chief Peguis Trail, McGillivray Boulevard and Waverley Street are among the city's major arterial roads. A stall at a busy light on any of them is a tow call, even if the car might restart. Don't let someone push you through the intersection.

Prairie winter

Winnipeg Cold and Your Battery

Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for Richardson International Airport put the average January low at about minus 21 C. The same station counts about 52 days a year with lows below minus 20 C, and about 13 below minus 30 C. Wind chill drops below minus 30 on about 44 days a year.

That kind of cold drains a tired battery overnight. Here's how to stay ahead of it:

  • Plug in. If your car has a block heater, use it when the forecast drops. A warm engine cranks easier.
  • Listen when you turn the key. Slow, groaning cranking or fast clicking points to the battery. A jump start often gets you going.
  • Keep a winter kit. A blanket, gloves, a phone charger and a small shovel. If you wait, wait warm.
  • Blowing snow. The airport station logs blowing snow on about 19 days a year. On open stretches of the Perimeter, it can hide a car on the shoulder. Hazards on, and stay inside.

Slid into a snowbank on a side street? That's a winch-out, as long as the car isn't damaged.

Summer counts too

The same normals show about 13 days a year above 30 C. Heat is rough on cooling systems and old batteries. If your car overheats in traffic on Pembina or Portage, pull over, shut it off and call.

Winnipeg Road Rules Worth Knowing

Manitoba's slow down, move over law

The Highway Traffic Act covers tow trucks and roadside helpers doing battery boosts, tire changes and lockouts. When one is stopped with its lights on, you must slow to no more than 40 km/h where the limit is under 80, and 60 km/h where it's 80 or more. With two or more lanes your way, move over a lane if it's safe. Read it in the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act, section 109.1.

The winter route parking ban

Between November 1 and the end of April, the city can switch on a ban for streets signed WINTER ROUTE or SNOW ROUTE. Once it's on, don't park there between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Cars left there risk a ticket and a tow to a compound. Check the City of Winnipeg parking ban page before you park overnight.

Before a highway trip

Look at Manitoba 511, the road and traveler service run by Manitoba Transportation. It shows closures and conditions before you head out on Highway 1 or 75.

Winnipeg Towing Questions

My car was towed during a snow route ban. Can you get it back?

No. That's a city parking tow, and the car goes to a compound. Check with the City of Winnipeg to find it. If it won't start once you have it back, call us for a jump or a tow to a shop.

Will a jump work at minus 30?

Often, if the battery is just drained. If it's old or frozen, it may not hold a charge. Then the better call is a tow to a shop. Either way, we text you the price before anyone comes.

I'm stuck on the Perimeter. Should I get out and wait?

Usually no. Stay in the car with your belt on and hazards flashing, unless you smell smoke or the car is in a live lane. If you're in a live lane, call 911 first.

Does anyone photograph my car before it's towed?

Yes. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your car, and we text you the photos. It's one of the terms of the Stay-With-You Promise.
