Tow Costs in Winnipeg: What Deep Cold and Snow Add

A Winnipeg tow has no fixed price. Winter is what moves it most. A car buried in a snowbank, a frozen battery at minus 30, or a stall on the Perimeter in blowing snow all take more work than a summer curbside pickup. Distance, your vehicle and where the car sits matter too. Get one full price by text before a truck is sent, and the cold can't add a surprise.
Why does winter change what a Winnipeg tow costs?
Winnipeg winters are long and hard on cars. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for Richardson International Airport show a January average high of about minus 11 C. The average January low is about minus 21 C. Lows fall below minus 20 C on about 52 days a year.
The same station records about 114 cm of snow a year. It logs blowing snow on about 19 days and freezing rain or drizzle on about 11. Each of those turns an easy job into a harder one.
- Snow around the car. Your driver may need to dig or pull the car free before it can be loaded.
- Ice under the tires. A car on glare ice can slide while it's being hooked up. That takes more care and more time.
- Frozen parts. Brakes, doors and gear shifts can freeze. A car that won't roll is harder to load.
- Poor visibility. Blowing snow on an open road means more care setting up a safe work zone.
None of this is a fee you should learn about later. Describe the snow and ice on the call, and the price you get covers it.
Stuck in a snowbank: winch-out or tow?
This choice can change your price more than anything else. Many Winnipeg drivers in a snowbank don't need a tow at all.
A winch-out pulls your car back onto the road with a cable. If the car is not damaged, you drive away. That is a lighter job than loading the car and hauling it across town.
You need a full car tow instead when:
- The car hit something hard on the way into the snow
- A wheel looks bent or the car sits crooked
- Fluid is leaking onto the snow
- The car won't start once it's free
Tell the dispatcher how deep the car is. Is it nose first or sideways? Is it near the road edge, or far down a ditch? The winch-out service is for cars close to the road. A car far off the shoulder may need more than that, so say so.
Is it the battery, or does the car need a tow?
On a minus 30 morning, a car that won't start is often just a tired battery. A jump start is a much smaller job than a tow. So check the signs before you ask for a truck.
| What you hear or see | The likely job |
|---|---|
| Slow, heavy cranking, or rapid clicking | Battery. Try a jump start first. |
| Dash lights dim or dead when you turn the key | Battery. A jump often works. |
| Strong cranking, but the engine never catches | Likely not the battery. Plan for a tow to a shop. |
| A jump worked, but the car died again soon after | The battery or charging system is failing. A tow is next. |
If you have a block heater, plug it in on cold nights. A warm engine cranks more easily. That habit can save you a call entirely.
Does it cost more past the Perimeter?
Distance is part of every tow price. In Winnipeg, the Perimeter Highway makes distance easy to picture. It is a ring of about 90 km around the city. PTH 100 is the south half and PTH 101 is the north half.
A tow from Osborne Village to a shop a few blocks away is short. A tow from a stall out near Headingley, or past Oak Bluff on the South Perimeter, to a shop in Transcona crosses most of the city. The truck drives farther to reach you, and farther to haul you.
Two ways to keep distance in check:
- Pick the shop before you call. Know its name and address. A clear drop point keeps the price clear.
- Think about a closer shop. If your usual garage is across the city, a good shop near where you broke down may make sense.
On the Perimeter itself, put your hazards on and stay buckled in. Manitoba's Highway Traffic Act tells passing drivers to slow down for stopped tow trucks with lights on, and to move over a lane when it's safe. If anyone is hurt, or your car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Check Manitoba 511 for road conditions before a winter drive out of town.
Does my vehicle change the price?
Yes. A small car and a full-size SUV are different loads. All-wheel drive vehicles often ride on a flatbed so the drive wheels don't turn. A lowered car can need extra care to load without scraping.
Snow adds to this. An AWD SUV frozen into a back lane in River Heights is a different job than the same SUV on a cleared street. Give the make, the model and whether it's AWD when you call.
Sentinel's partners handle light-duty jobs only: cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups. We don't tow big trucks, RVs or motorcycles.
Can a parking ban tow cost me more than a breakdown?
It can, because a ban tow comes with a ticket and a trip to a compound. Those charges come from the city and the towing compound, not from a tow you chose. The City of Winnipeg says it can declare five kinds of winter parking bans. Here are the ones that end in a tow.
Winter route ban
This ban can start any time from November 1 to the end of April. The city announces it seven days ahead. Once it's on, don't park on streets signed WINTER ROUTE or SNOW ROUTE from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. Cars left there risk a ticket and a tow to the towing company's compound.
Extended winter route ban
After big snowfalls, the city may stretch the ban. Parking on winter routes then stops at midnight instead of 2 a.m.
Residential ban
Every residential street has a snow zone letter. Find yours with the city's Know Your Zone app, its online address lookup, or by calling 311. During this ban, cameras read plates, and tickets can arrive in the mail. The winter route ban is paused while a residential ban runs.
Snow emergency and temporary signs
In a sudden heavy snowfall, the Mayor can declare a snow emergency. No tickets are issued, but cars on winter routes are towed out of the plows' way to nearby spots. Streets with temporary "no parking" signs can see tickets and tows to a compound too.
Sentinel doesn't do impounds or parking ban tows, and we can't release a car from a compound. If your car was moved, start with 311. If it won't start once you get it back, a jump or a tow to a shop is something we can help with. Check the city's parking ban page before you park overnight.
What about the repair bill after the tow?
The tow and the repair are two separate bills. Manitoba gives you strong rights on the repair side. The province's Consumer Protection Office says a repair shop must offer you a written estimate for most repairs. The final charge must stay within 10% of that estimate.
- You approve first. A shop can't charge for work you didn't authorize. You can say yes in writing, by phone or by email.
- New problems need a new estimate. If the shop finds more to fix, it must write a separate estimate and get your okay.
- Estimate fees are disclosed. A shop may charge for an estimate, but it must tell you, and how much, before it starts.
- Warranty. Parts and the labor to install them carry a minimum warranty of 90 days or 5,000 km, whichever comes first.
These rules don't cover repair claims through Manitoba Public Insurance. Those follow their own process.
How does a price locked by text protect you?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. Before we dispatch, we text you a price. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, say the car is deeper in the snow than anyone knew, we text a new price first and you decide.
Once a partner accepts, you get your driver's name, photo and truck by text, and you can track the truck on a map. We keep checking on you by text until it arrives. That's the Stay-With-You Promise. For roads and neighborhoods across the city, see our Winnipeg towing page.

Winnipeg Tow Cost Questions
Why does a Winnipeg tow cost more in January than in July?
The tow itself isn't priced by the month. Winter just makes the job harder: snow to dig through, ice under the tires, frozen brakes. Tell us what you see, and the price we text covers that work.
My car is in a snowbank on a side street. Do I need a tow?
Maybe not. If the car is close to the road and not damaged, a winch-out pulls it free and you drive away. If it hit something, leaks fluid or won't start, plan on a tow to a shop.
Can you get my car back after a snow route tow?
No. Parking ban tows are handled by the city and its towing compound. Call 311 to find out where your car is. If it won't start once you have it, we can help with a jump or a tow.
What if the job turns out bigger after the driver arrives?
Your texted price is the most you pay for the job you described. If the job really is different, we text you a new price first. You decide before any extra work starts.
