Manitoba law

Manitoba Names the Roadside Helper

Manitoba's Highway Traffic Act, section 109.1, protects roadside assistance vehicles by name. That covers tow trucks, and also vehicles used for battery service, tire changes and repairs, and locked-vehicle service. So the law protects the partner we send whether they show up to tow, to jump your battery or to get you back into your car.

When one is stopped at the roadside, passing drivers must slow down and pass only when it's safe. On a road with two or more lanes going their way, they must also move to a lane farther away if they can do it safely.

How slow is slow enough?

Where the limit is 80 km/h or more, passing drivers may go no faster than 60 km/h. Where the limit is above 40 but under 80, the cap is 40 km/h.

Prairie south, subarctic north

From the Trans-Canada to the Road North

The Trans-Canada, PTH 1, crosses Manitoba for about 490 km, from the Saskatchewan line west of Brandon to the Ontario line east of Winnipeg. It's four-lane divided except for a short 18 km piece in the southeast corner, and it's the only major east-west divided highway in the province. The Perimeter Highway loops about 90 km around Winnipeg. PTH 75 runs south to Emerson, the busiest Canada-US crossing on the Prairies, and PTH 6 is the main highway north, from the Perimeter all the way to Thompson.

Southern Manitoba is cold and windy in winter, and the open prairie brings frequent blizzards. The north is subarctic, with long winters and nights that reach 40 below on several days each season. A car left out on a night like that may need a jump start, and a drift at the edge of a rural road can call for a winch-out.

Manitoba Questions

My car died on PTH 6 on the way to Thompson. Can you reach me?

Call and tell us your direction and the nearest community or landmark. If a partner covers that part of the highway, we'll lock your price and send them. If none does yet, we'll say so right away so you can call someone else.
