East-west and north-south

Ohio's Grid of Interstates

Many of the country's big east-west routes pass through Ohio. The Ohio Turnpike, signed as I-76, I-80 and I-90, runs 241 miles across the north between the Indiana and Pennsylvania lines. I-76 heads through Akron to Pennsylvania, I-70 crosses the middle of the state through Dayton and Columbus, and State Route 32, the Appalachian Highway, runs from West Virginia to Cincinnati.

Going north and south, I-75 runs up the west side through Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo. I-71 cuts through the middle, from Cincinnati through Columbus to Cleveland. I-77 serves the east, from Cleveland through Akron, Canton, New Philadelphia and Marietta into West Virginia. The stretch of I-75 between Cincinnati and Dayton is one of the most heavily traveled in the state.

Winters run from cool to cold. The Snowbelt along the southeast shore of Lake Erie gets severe lake-effect storms, while the far south edges into a milder climate. A frozen morning can mean a jump start, and a snowy exit ramp can mean a winch-out.

Does Ohio's move-over law cover tow trucks?

Yes. Per the Ohio Department of Transportation, when a vehicle is stopped on the side of the road with its lights flashing, you have to move over and slow down. The color of the lights doesn't matter, so it covers police, road crews and tow trucks alike, on Interstates and city streets. Read it on ODOT's Move Over page.
