No Membership, No Problem: Roadside Help Near Wright-Patterson by Dayton

You don't need a membership to get a tow or a jump near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Call, get one price by text, and a vetted local partner takes the job. What slows help down near the base is a fuzzy location. Say if you're inside the fence or outside it. Name the nearest gate by number, plus the road: SR 444, SR 844, I-675, Springfield Street or National Road. If you're in a live lane or anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
Do you need a roadside plan to get help near Wright-Patt?
No. Maybe your plan lapsed, or you never had one. Either way, you can still get help today. Sentinel works one job at a time. You call, say what's wrong, and get a price by text before anyone is sent. That price is the most you pay for the job you described. If the job changes, say a jump turns into a tow, we text you a new price first, and you decide.
There's nothing to sign up for first. After your first job, your vehicle goes on file in the free Sentinel Circle. Next time, you can just text "TOW." Curious what moves a price up or down around here? Our Dayton tow price guide walks through it.
Why isn't "near Wright-Patt" enough of a location?
The base has two parts, Area A and Area B. Each one has its own gates, and each gate opens onto a different road. "I'm by the base" could mean a ramp on I-675, a shoulder on SR 444 in Fairborn, or a lot off Springfield Street. Those are three different trips for your driver.
Traffic near the gates also changes through the day. The base posts gate hours, closures and delays on its own pages, and it tells drivers to "plan your commute accordingly." Three notices matter this fall:
- Gate 22B on I-675 is inbound only from 6 to 9 a.m. Cars can only go in through it then, not out. If you're inside Area B in the morning and need to leave, plan on another gate.
- Construction trucks use a new entrance on National Road. It serves a building site near AFIT, and it is not a way onto the base. Heavy equipment comes and goes from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and the base says to expect more traffic. If you stall on National Road, watch for big trucks turning.
- Chidlaw Road no longer stops at Spruce Way. The base made that corner a 2-way stop to help traffic reach Gate 12A. Only Spruce Way stops now. If your car dies there, don't expect cars on Chidlaw to stop for you.
Which gate are you closest to?
A gate number pins your spot fast. These are the hours the base listed on its gate pages this fall. The base also posts special gate hours for holidays and race days, so check its page before you count on one.
| Gate | Area | Hours the base lists |
|---|---|---|
| 1A, Commissary Gate | A | 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. |
| 12A, AFMC HQ Gate | A | Open 24/7 |
| 15A, SR 844 Gate | A | Weekdays, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| 26A, commercial traffic only | A | Weekdays, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
| 1B, Springfield Street Gate | B | 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| 19B, National Road Gate | B | 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| 22B, I-675 Gate | B | Open 24/7, inbound only 6 to 9 a.m. |
The Air Force museum has its own entrance on Springfield Street, at historic Wright Field. The museum calls it Gate 28B.
How do you describe the roads around the base?
Give the road, your direction and the last exit, gate or cross street you passed. Here's what helps on each one.
- SR 444. It runs from SR 4 in Dayton up through Fairborn. In 2012, the stretch that ran through the base was moved onto Fairborn city streets. So part of SR 444 is now ordinary town streets. Name the Fairborn street you're on, not just the route number.
- SR 844. This short road starts at I-675, passes Colonel Glenn Highway and Wright State University, crosses SR 444 and ends at Gate 15A. Its ramps at I-675 exit 17 only work two ways: you can get off going south, and you can get on going north.
- I-675. Gate 22B is the base's I-675 gate. Exit 15 is Colonel Glenn Highway, the exit the museum sends visitors to from every direction. Say the last exit number you saw.
- Springfield Street. Gate 1B and the museum entrance are both on it. The museum's directions use Harshman Road (Wright Brothers Parkway) and Springfield Pike to get there. Say the name on the last sign you passed.
- National Road. Gate 19B is here, and so is the new construction entrance. Say which one you're closer to.
- SR 4. A freeway that runs beside the Mad River. SR 444 starts off it in Dayton. Give the last exit and your direction.
Can a tow truck come onto the base to get you?
Not without clearing the gate. Your partner's driver is a visitor, like anyone without base ID. The base says every visitor needs an approved sponsor and a valid photo ID, and must pass a background check to get a pass. In May 2026, it also said its Trusted Traveler program is suspended. While it stays that way, every person in a vehicle must show approved ID at the gate. Visitors without the right documents may be turned away.
Visitor passes come from the Pass and Registration office at 4185 Logistics Ave., Building 286, in Area A. It's open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closed on federal holidays and AFMC pass days. The phone is 937-257-6264. After hours, the base issues visitor passes at Gate 12A and Gate 22B, with the same screening.
So tell us up front if you're inside the fence, and which area you're in. We'll say before anyone is sent whether a partner can get to you there. If your car still runs, even roughly, it may be easier to drive out a gate and stop in a safe lot outside. Never stop in a gate lane or beside the guard booth.
What if your battery dies at the Air Force museum?
You spend the afternoon in the galleries. You walk back out to the lot, turn the key, and hear a click. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. It's closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Parking is free and on site. Here's how to help your driver find you:
- Give the museum's address. It's 1100 Spaatz Street. If that address fails in a map app, the museum suggests 5717 Huberville Ave. in Riverside, the building across the street.
- Say "museum entrance on Springfield Street." That's Gate 28B, not one of the commuter gates.
- Say where you parked. Name the nearest door, a light pole or a row marker if you see one.
Is it a jump, a lockout, a tire or a tow?
Tell the dispatcher what you saw and heard. It decides which kind of help comes.
- A click, dim dash lights, or nothing at all. Ask for a jump start.
- Keys on the seat, doors locked. That's a car lockout, not a tow.
- A pothole on Colonel Glenn took out a tire. If your spare is good, a flat tire change puts it on.
- It won't start after a jump, or it smokes or grinds. You need car towing to the shop you pick.
How long can a dead car sit on the shoulder near the base?
Not long, and less if it's in the way. Under Ohio Revised Code 4513.61, police can order a car into storage if it's left on a public street or a highway right-of-way for 48 hours or longer, and nobody told them why. If the car blocks traffic, they can have it moved right away. Cars from a crash fall under a different section, 4513.66.
Sentinel doesn't do impounds or police tows. If your car was already hauled off, we can't get it back for you. Once it's released, if it won't run, a partner can tow it to your shop.
While you wait on a shoulder, stay buckled in with your hazards on. Only get out if there's a safe place to stand, well back from the road. ODOT says Ohio's Move Over law covers tow trucks with flashing lights, on every road from interstates to city streets. Don't count on every driver obeying it. Stay clear of the lane while your driver works. Before you drive the area, OHGO shows crashes and closures.
How does Sentinel work near Wright-Patt?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, and we don't own trucks. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. We text you a locked price before dispatch. Then we text your driver's name, photo and truck, and you can track your truck on a map. We check on you by text until the truck arrives. Read every term in the Stay-With-You Promise, or see how it works step by step. For the rest of the city, see our Dayton towing page.

Wright-Patterson Roadside Questions
Do I need a membership to get a jump start near Wright-Patterson?
No. Call, say what's wrong and where you are, and you get a locked price by text before anyone is sent. You pay for that one job. There's no plan to buy first.
My car died inside the base. Can a tow truck come in?
Only if the driver clears the gate like any visitor. The base issues passes at Pass and Registration on weekdays and at Gates 12A and 22B after hours, and visitors without the right ID may be turned away. Tell us you're on base before anyone is sent.
Which Wright-Patterson gates are open at night?
The base's fall 2026 gate pages list Gate 12A in Area A and Gate 22B in Area B as open 24/7. Gate 22B is inbound only from 6 to 9 a.m. Hours change for holidays and events, so check the base's gate page first.
Can I leave my dead car on SR 444 overnight and come back for it?
Ohio law lets police store a car left on a public road for 48 hours or longer without notice. If it blocks traffic, they can move it right away. Get it moved the same day if you can.
Rules change, so check the official source before you rely on it.
