Where You Break Down in North Carolina Changes the Fix
Height above sea level shapes the weather here more than anything else. The mountains stay coolest all year, the Piedmont runs hotter in summer and colder in winter than the coast, and the ocean keeps coastal winters mild.
- The mountainsSteep interstate grades and runaway truck ramps. In the northwest, cold air trapped against the mountains can turn a winter storm into a major ice event. A car that slid off an icy shoulder may need a winch-out.
- The PiedmontI-40 links the Triad and the Triangle, and runs with I-85 east of Greensboro. A battery that dies in a packed lot, or a flat tire in rush-hour traffic, is the classic Piedmont headache.
- The coastal plainAbout an inch of snow or ice a year, and some years none. Hurricanes, tropical storms and floods are the real risk here, along with tornadoes spun up by those storms.

The road that crosses it all
I-40, From the Pigeon River Gorge to Wilmington
I-40 is the only interstate that crosses North Carolina end to end, 420.21 miles from the Tennessee line to Wilmington. It enters through the Pigeon River Gorge, a stretch known for rockslides. In 2024, flooding from Hurricane Helene washed away the eastbound lanes there in several places and closed the road completely. East of Asheville it crosses the Eastern Continental Divide, then drops down Old Fort Mountain, a steep, winding grade that's hard on heavy trucks. After that it runs through Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Durham and Raleigh before heading southeast across farmland to the coast.
I-26 is the other mountain climb. It enters from Tennessee at Sams Gap, 3,760 feet up, with three runaway truck ramps on the eastbound side in its first miles. Farther east, floods after storms like Matthew and Florence have closed parts of I-95 and I-40 for days.
Wherever it happens, the call is the same. Tell us the route, the direction and the nearest exit or mile marker, and we'll text you a locked price before we send a nearby partner for a tow.
North Carolina General Statutes
Three State Rules for a Breakdown
- Move over. Under G.S. 20-157(f), drivers must shift away from, or slow down for, a stopped emergency or public service vehicle with a warning light on. That includes a truck helping with wrecked or disabled cars.
- Clear the lane after a minor crash. If nobody's hurt and every car can be driven normally and safely, G.S. 20-166(c2) says to move out of the travel lane to the shoulder as soon as you can. A car that needs a tow doesn't count.
- Don't leave it for a day. Under G.S. 20-161(e), a car left on a highway right-of-way for 24 hours or more can be removed and stored by an officer.
What if the road ahead is flooded?
Don't drive in. Turn around, find high ground, and call. If a partner can reach you safely, we'll send one. If flooding blocks the way, we'll tell you straight.
