Towing in Greensboro Where I-40, I-73 and I-85 Meet

Three interstates cross in Greensboro, and a lot of traffic funnels through a few interchanges. I-40 runs east and west through the city. I-85 swings through the southern outskirts and joins I-40 on the east side. Wendover Avenue works like a freeway on the west and north sides of downtown, and Bryan Boulevard heads out to the airport.

When your car quits on one of them, call and tell us the road, your direction and the nearest exit or cross street. We lock your price by text, then send the nearest available partner. A dead battery at Four Seasons Town Centre is a jump start. A blowout on Wendover is a tire change if there's room to work. A car that won't run gets a tow to your shop.

What locals call Death Valley

It's the stretch where US 29 and US 220 merge onto I-40. It has long been known for heavy traffic and crashes, and parts of it have been rebuilt.

If you stall there, don't try to cross lanes to the far shoulder. Stay on the side you're on, hazards on, belt on, and call.

The Urban Loop

All 39.5 Miles of the Loop, Side by Side

The Greensboro Urban Loop was finished in January 2023, when its last piece opened between North Elm Street and I-785. It carries I-73, I-85, I-785, I-840 and US 421, so the number on the sign changes as you go. The side of the loop you're on tells us more than the route number does.

West side

The big junction with I-40, I-73 and I-840, then exits for West Friendly Avenue and Bryan Boulevard, where I-73 leaves toward the airport.

North side

Battleground Avenue, Lawndale Drive, North Elm Street and Yanceyville Street, then the junction with I-785 and US 29. Give us the exit name, not just "the loop."

East and south sides

The junction where I-785 and I-840 end at I-40 and I-85, then Youngs Mill Road, South Elm-Eugene Street and Gate City Boulevard. Near the south end, I-73 and I-85 share about a mile of road where one is signed north and the other south.

Piedmont winters

Ice Is the Winter Problem, Not Snow

Greensboro doesn't get much snow. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the airport show about 7.5 inches a year, and only a couple of days with an inch or more. What it does get is freezing rain. Forecasters call the pattern cold-air damming: cold air stays trapped near the ground while rain falls from warmer air above, and it freezes where it lands. That's often a bigger problem here than snow.

On ice, even a slow slide can end in a ditch or against a curb. If your car slides off and still runs, a winch-out is usually all you need. Don't spin the tires. If you hit something or the car won't move under its own power, it needs a tow.

Cold nights take out tired batteries too. The same airport normals show about 65 nights a year at or below freezing. A car that clicks but won't crank on a cold morning is a jump, not a tow.

North Carolina law

Small Crash on I-40? Clear the Lane First

North Carolina has a rule for minor crashes. Under G.S. 20-166, if nobody is hurt and every car involved can still be driven normally and safely, each driver should move out of the travel lane to the shoulder, or to a marked crash investigation site, as soon as possible. That applies on main lanes, ramps, shoulders and medians.

If your car won't drive, the rule doesn't ask you to push it. Leave it where it is, turn on your hazards and call 911 if anyone is hurt or you're in a live lane. Then call us for the tow.

Car towed in Greensboro?

Who Towed It Decides Who You Call

We don't do impound releases, but we can point you to the right office. The Greensboro Police Retrieve a Towed Car page splits it up like this:

After an arrest or a violation

Go to Police Records at the headquarters on Police Plaza with your registration or title and a photo ID. You get a claim ticket and the storage company's location.

Parking, ordinance or private property

Parking Enforcement and Local Ordinance have their own phone lines on that page. For a private lot, state law in Guilford County requires a sign at every entrance naming the tow company and its phone number, under G.S. 20-219.2.

Greensboro questions

Greensboro Drivers Ask

My car died on the Urban Loop. How do I tell you where I am?

Give the side of the loop, your direction and the last exit name, like Lawndale Drive or Gate City Boulevard. The route number changes around the loop, so exit names help more.

It's icing over and I slid into a ditch off Battleground. Can you pull me out?

Usually. If the car isn't damaged, a winch-out gets it back on the road. On a busy stretch, stay in the car with your belt on until the truck arrives. Your price comes by text before anyone is sent.

My car was towed from an apartment lot near campus. Who do I call?

Call the company named on the sign at the lot entrance. In Guilford County, state law requires that sign. If there's no sign, the city's towed car page lists who to contact.

Will someone check on me while I wait off I-85?

Yes. We check on you by text until the truck arrives, and we can text one family member your location too. It's all in the Stay-With-You Promise.

Roadside help in Greensboro, NC

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Greensboro

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Greensboro drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Greensboro Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
