What the Cape Fear River Adds to a Fayetteville Tow Price

In Fayetteville, NC, the Cape Fear River adds distance to a tow, and distance is most of the price. Downtown, Cross Creek Mall, the Fort Bragg gates and Hope Mills all sit west of the river. Eastover, Vander, Stedman and the I-95 exits from 49 to 58 sit east of it. Break down over there, and both halves of the job get longer: your driver's trip out to you and the loaded trip to your shop. You still get your price by text before anyone is sent, and you decide.

Why does the river change a tow price?

Every tow has two trips inside it. First, your partner tow company drives out to you. Then your car rides to a shop, a dealer or your driveway. Both trips burn time and fuel, so both count.

The Cape Fear River runs down the east side of Fayetteville. Cross Creek rises on the west side of town and flows east into it. Most of what you think of as Fayetteville sits on the west bank. Follow I-295 and you can see it. The Outer Loop starts at I-95 near Hope Mills, passes Raeford Road, Cliffdale Road, the All American Freeway, Bragg Boulevard and Ramsey Street, and only then crosses the river. Everything on that list is west of the water.

East of the river is quieter country. Eastover is a town of its own, about 7 miles northeast of downtown, with US 301 running through it as Dunn Road. Vander sits just east of the city, with I-95 as its western edge. Stedman is 11 miles east of Fayetteville on NC 24. If your car dies in any of them, the shop you trust on Raeford Road is a bridge and a long drive away.

Which bridges cross the Cape Fear in Fayetteville?

Only a few roads cross the river near the city. Your tow will use one of them, in one direction or the other.

  • I-295, north of town. The Outer Loop crosses between Ramsey Street, exit 28, and River Road, exit 30, at Eastover. It ends at I-95 about four miles later.
  • Grove Street, downtown. NC 24 and NC 210 share this bridge, built in the mid-1970s. NCDOT's list of named bridges calls it the Oscar P. Breece Bridge. On the east bank, NC 53 begins and reaches I-95 at exit 49 in about three and a half miles.
  • Person Street, downtown. The other city crossing. The National Weather Service notes a railroad bridge just downstream of it.
  • I-95, south of town. The interstate crosses just north of the NC 87 interchange at exit 46.

I-95 Business carries US 301 from Eastern Boulevard, on the east side of downtown, out to Dunn Road in Eastover, so it links the two banks as well. When you call, name the bridge you are near. "Just past the Grove Street bridge, heading east" is a spot your driver can find.

How far is the east side from the rest of town?

The mile markers on the exit lists tell the story.

Now put a real breakdown on that map. Your battery dies at a gas pump on Dunn Road in Eastover. A jump start is the likely fix. Nothing has to cross a bridge, so distance barely matters. Now say the engine quits instead. If your mechanic is near Cross Creek Mall, the loaded trip runs out of Eastover, over the river and across the city. Pick a shop in Eastover or along NC 24 and that second trip shrinks to a few miles. You can always move the car to your regular shop later, once you know what broke.

What kinds of jobs come up east of the river?

  • I-95 north of the river. You are headed to Dunn and the car loses power near exit 52 for NC 24. You need a car tow. Give the dispatcher the last exit you passed and your direction.
  • I-295 near River Road. A tire blows on the Outer Loop between the river and I-95. If you have a good spare, a flat tire change gets you rolling with no tow at all.
  • Soft shoulder on a two-lane road. Fayetteville sits in the Sandhills. Pull too far right on NC 53 or River Road and a wheel can drop into sand. That is a winch-out first, then a drive or a tow.
  • Driveway in Vander. The car clicks but will not start. A jump start often solves it. If it does not, the shop you pick decides the second trip.

Is I-95 east of the river a work zone right now?

Part of it is. NCDOT is widening I-95 from Murphy Road, exit 55, north to exit 71 outside Dunn. The road goes from four lanes to eight, and six interchanges are being rebuilt. Construction began in 2019, and NCDOT still listed the project as under way when we checked on October 4, 2026. A separate contract picks up north of exit 71.

Work zones move the shoulder, close ramps and shift lanes. If you stop inside one, say so on the call and name the nearest exit. Your driver may need to come in from a different ramp, and the job is priced on the real route, not the map route. Check DriveNC for closures before you head north.

One more thing for the interstate. NCDOT runs a free Safety Service Patrol on many of its busiest roads. Its trucks change a flat, bring a small amount of gas or diesel, and jump a dead battery. Dial *HP from your cell phone if you are in a covered area. NCDOT says the patrol covers most major highway routes. On the two-lane roads around Eastover and Stedman, call for a partner instead.

What happens to the bridges when the river floods?

This is the hidden factor east of the river. A tow needs an open bridge in both directions. The National Weather Service gauge at Fayetteville puts flood stage at 35 feet. Moderate flooding starts at 48 feet and major flooding at 58. The gauge's own notes say that at 59 feet the river reaches the bottom of the railroad bridge just below the Person Street bridge. At 60 feet, water begins to go around one end of the NC 24 bridge, which is the Grove Street crossing.

Those numbers are not far-fetched here. The river crested at 58.94 feet on October 10, 2016, after Hurricane Matthew. It hit 61.58 feet on September 19, 2018, after Hurricane Florence. At 69 feet, the Weather Service says, the city itself begins to flood.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the busiest stretch from mid-August to mid-October. So this still matters this fall. If the downtown bridges close, a tow from Eastover to a west-side shop may have to loop up to I-295 or down to I-95. That is a much longer loaded trip. Sometimes the honest answer is to wait a day. Never drive into water on the road. If the car stalls in water, get out and get to high ground first. The tow can wait.

What else sets the price?

  • Your vehicle. A small sedan loads fast. An all-wheel-drive SUV or a light pickup often needs a flatbed. Sentinel handles cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups only.
  • What went wrong. A dead battery, a flat with a good spare or an empty tank can be fixed where you sit. A seized engine or a broken axle means a tow.
  • Where the car sits. A level shoulder is one job. Sand up to the hubs or a ditch is a winch-out before anything else.
  • Where it goes. You choose the drop-off. Home tonight and a shop tomorrow is a fair plan, and often a shorter one.

One caution if you plan to leave the car and come back tomorrow. Under G.S. 20-161(e), a vehicle left on a highway right-of-way for 24 hours or more can be removed and stored by an officer. A car sitting on the I-95 shoulder near Eastover for a day may not be there when you return, and getting it out of storage is a second bill.

How does Sentinel price a tow east of the river?

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. You tell us where the car is, what you drive, what it is doing and where it should go. Your price comes by text before any truck is sent, and that number is the most you pay for the job. If the job turns out different on arrival, we text a new price first and you decide. We stay with you by text until help arrives, and you can track your truck on a map. That is the Stay-With-You Promise, and how it works is the same in Eastover as it is on Raeford Road.

For the gates, the Outer Loop exits and the rest of the map, see our Fayetteville towing page. Our post on what drives a tow price near Fayetteville covers Fort Bragg and storm closures. The North Carolina page has the state rules.

If anyone is hurt or your car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.

Cape Fear River Tow Price Questions

Is a tow from Eastover a bigger job than one from downtown Fayetteville?

Usually, yes. Eastover is about 7 miles from downtown and on the other side of the river, so your driver's trip and the loaded trip both grow. Your vehicle and the shop you pick matter too. Your exact price comes by text before anyone is sent.

Which bridge will my tow use?

It depends on where the car is and where it is going. I-295 crosses north of town, Grove Street and Person Street cross downtown, and I-95 crosses south of town near exit 46. Your driver picks the open one closest to the route.

Can a tow cross the river during a flood?

Only on an open bridge. The Weather Service says water reaches the railroad bridge below Person Street at 59 feet and starts around the end of the NC 24 bridge at 60. The river passed 58 feet after both Matthew and Florence. Get to high ground, check DriveNC, and call when a road is open.

My car died on I-95 near exit 52. What do I do first?

If anyone is hurt or you cannot clear the lane, call 911. Otherwise get onto the right shoulder, turn on your hazards and stay buckled. Dial *HP for NCDOT's free patrol if you are in a covered area. For a tow to a shop, call us and name the last exit you passed.
