Buffalo Impound: Fees, Auctions, and What to Expect

At the Buffalo impound, your bill keeps growing. The city charges storage for each day your car sits at Dart Street, on top of the towing charge. If nobody claims it, New York law lets the city sell it after a notice and a ten-day wait. Buffalo sells these cars through GovDeals, as salvage. Pay at City Hall and pick up the same day.

What will I pay to get my car out?

Your total is built from a few pieces. Each one is set by the city, not by the lot.

  • The towing charge. This covers moving your car from the street to Dart Street.
  • Storage. A 2012 city audit says storage is counted from the tow date to the day the car leaves.
  • The ticket. The tow usually comes with a parking ticket. Ask if it has to be paid before release.

The fees live in Chapter 307 of the Buffalo City Code. The city doesn't post the current amounts on its impound pages. So call before you go. The Parking Department is at 716-851-5182, and the impound is at 716-851-5369. Ask for one total that covers the tow, storage up to today, and any tickets.

Write the number down. Then ask one more question: "Is there a police hold on my car?" A hold can change the steps, and it's better to learn that on the phone than at the gate.

Why does waiting a few days cost so much?

Every day is another day of storage. A car towed on a Thursday night during a bus route ban can sit through Friday, the weekend and Monday. The lot only releases cars on weekdays. That gap adds up before you even start.

There's a trap that catches people too. The 2012 audit says that if you pay at City Hall but don't collect the car that same day, a late storage charge gets added. Then you have to go back to City Hall and pay again before the lot lets the car go.

So plan the day as one trip. City Hall opens at 8:30 a.m. The lot releases drivable cars until 3:30 p.m. Pay in the morning at 65 Niagara Square, Room 111. Then head straight to 166 Dart St.

Can I pay with a check?

Make checks out to the Parking Violations Bureau. The city only takes checks for tickets when your registration isn't suspended. If yours is suspended, call the Parking Department and ask how to pay.

When can Buffalo sell my car at auction?

This is the question that keeps people up at night. Here is what the rules say, step by step.

When does New York call a car abandoned?

New York Vehicle and Traffic Law section 1224 treats a car as abandoned when it's left unattended:

  • with no plates, for more than six hours on a road or public place
  • for more than 24 hours on a road or public place where parking isn't allowed
  • for more than 48 hours after parking there became illegal
  • for more than 96 hours on someone else's property without permission

How much warning do I get?

Under section 1224, the local authority has to notify the last owner, if it knows who that is. The notice says that if the car isn't claimed, it will be sold at public auction or by bid after ten days. Ten days after that notice, ownership passes to the city.

The 2012 audit describes how Buffalo handled mail. A first notice goes out by first-class mail. If nobody responds within 15 days, a second notice goes by certified mail. A police hold can change that timing. If you have a car loan, your lender gets a certified letter too before any sale.

The lesson is simple. Check your mailbox. The notice goes to the last owner the city can find, so keep your address current with the DMV. Better yet, don't wait for a letter. Call the impound the day you learn the car is gone.

Can I buy my own car back at the auction?

Don't count on it. The city's auction page says sales of impounded cars run through GovDeals, and bidders need an account. But in a 2024 answer to auction vendors, the city listed reasons a bidder can be blocked. One reason is bidding on a car they used to own.

There's another catch. The city says it sells these cars with an MV-907A salvage certificate. The buyer then files for a salvage exam with the DMV. So a car that leaves the auction has a salvage record, even if it was fine when it was towed.

The city's budget lists weekly auctions of unclaimed vehicles. Claiming your car early is the only sure way to keep it.

Do I still owe money after the car is sold?

You can. Section 1224 says the last owner of an abandoned car is liable for the costs of removal and storage. Losing the car does not erase the bill.

What if the car sold for more than you owed? State law says the leftover money, after expenses, is held for the owner for one year, without interest. In Buffalo, the 2012 audit says most auctioned cars owe more than they sell for. If yours sold for more, you file a claim with the City of Buffalo Law Department. The city doesn't have to tell you there's money waiting. Anything you owe the city comes out of it first.

What should I do this week to keep my car?

  1. Confirm where it is. Search AutoReturn by plate or VIN.
  2. Get your total. Call 716-851-5182 or 716-851-5369. Ask about tickets and holds.
  3. Fix paper problems first. A suspended registration means a DMV trip before the lot, if you want to keep your plates.
  4. Can't go yourself? Send someone with notarized consent from you.
  5. Do it in one day. Pay at City Hall in the morning, then pick up before the lot closes.

Short on money? Say so on that first call. Ask what your options are. A hard talk now beats a salvage title later.

How do I get it home if it won't start?

A car that sat at Dart Street through a cold week may not start. Its plates might be cut. Or crash damage might keep it off the road. The lot's cutoff for the last tow out is 3:15 p.m., so book early in the day.

Sentinel doesn't do impounds or releases. You settle with the city first. Then a vetted local partner can do a car tow for a car, SUV, minivan or light pickup, or a jump start for a weak battery.

Here's how it works. Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. We text your price before anyone is sent, and that price is locked. Buffalo Impound Fee and Auction Questions

How long before the Buffalo impound auctions my car?

The city doesn't post a set number of days. New York law requires a notice to the last owner, then a ten-day wait before an abandoned car can be sold. Lenders get notice too. Call the impound right away and ask where your car stands.

Does storage at Dart Street keep adding up on weekends?

Storage is counted from the tow date to the day the car leaves. The lot only releases cars Monday to Friday. Call 716-851-5369 and ask how weekend days are charged for your car.

If the city sells my car, do I still owe the fees?

Yes, you can. State law makes the last owner liable for removal and storage costs. If the car sold for more than you owed, the extra is held for you for one year. You claim it through the City Law Department.

Can Sentinel pay my impound fees or get my car released?

No. Sentinel doesn't handle impounds, fees or releases. Once the city releases your car, a vetted local partner can tow it home or to a shop.
