Lubbock's Grid Makes You Easy to Find
Lubbock makes it simple to say where you are. In the heart of Lubbock, numbered streets run east to west and lettered avenues run north to south. Avenue A is on the east side. The letters climb as you go west, until University Avenue takes the place of Avenue Z along Texas Tech. Past that, the avenues are named for cities, in alphabetical order: Akron, Boston, Canton and on down the line.
So when your car quits, the best thing to tell us is the corner. "19th and Avenue Q." "4th and University." That's all a partner needs to find you.
- In town: the numbered street, the avenue and which corner you're near.
- On a freeway: the road, your direction and the nearest exit.
- In a lot: the business or campus lot and the row, if you can see one.
We text you a locked price, then send the nearest available partner. A car that clicks but won't start may just need a jump start. Keys locked inside is a lockout. A car that won't move gets a tow to your home or shop.
Lubbock freeways
Loop 289, I-27 and the Marsha Sharp Freeway
Loop 289 circles the city as a full freeway, about 26 miles around, with frontage roads for nearly the whole way. It was built as a bypass, but it gets congested. If you have trouble on the main lanes and the car still rolls, ease onto the frontage road before you stop.
I-27 is the north-south freeway. It was once Avenue H, and it runs north to Amarillo and I-40. The airport sits just north of Loop 289 near I-27.
The Marsha Sharp Freeway carries US 62 and US 82 east to west, from northeast of downtown to past the west leg of the loop, and it's being extended toward Wolfforth. US 84 cuts across on a diagonal as Avenue Q, the Slaton Highway and Clovis Road.
South Plains weather
Spring Storms, Summer Heat and Cold Mornings
Lubbock sits on the far southwest edge of Tornado Alley. Spring brings the biggest risk of tornadoes and very large hail. Hail can break glass and leave a car you shouldn't drive. If that happens, park it and call for a tow.
Summers run hot. Winter afternoons are often sunny and mild, but mornings usually dip below freezing. That swing is what kills weak batteries. A car that ran fine yesterday afternoon may not turn over at 7am.
Tip: if the car only clicks, stop after a few tries. Every crank drains the battery more, and a jump works best while there's still some charge left.
Texas law
What Passing Drivers Owe Your Tow Driver
When a partner truck is stopped on Loop 289 or I-27 with its lights on, Texas Transportation Code 545.157 kicks in. Drivers with two or more lanes going their way have to clear the lane next to the truck. Anyone who stays in that lane has to drop 20 mph below the limit. On a 65 mph stretch, that means 45 or slower.
The law is written for tow trucks, emergency vehicles and road crews. It doesn't mention a car stopped with its hazards on, so protect yourself. Get onto the frontage road if you can, and wait there with your belt on.

Lubbock questions
What Lubbock Drivers Want to Know
I'm a Texas Tech student and my car won't start in a campus lot. Can you help?
Yes. Tell us which lot and roughly where the car is parked. A dead battery is usually a quick jump. If it won't hold a charge, we'll text you a tow price to a shop before anything happens.
My car is in the airport lot and the battery is dead. Can a partner get to it?
Usually, yes. Tell us which lot, the row if you can see it, and whether you'll need to pay at a gate to get out. If the jump doesn't take, your driver photographs all 4 sides before hookup and we text you the photos, then the car goes to the shop you pick.
Do you go out to Wolfforth, Slaton or Shallowater?
Yes, those towns are in the area we cover. Tell us the street, or the highway and nearest mile marker. Your texted price covers the whole trip, wherever the car is going.
Can someone at home follow along?
Yes. Share one phone number with us, and that person gets a text with where you are and when your driver should get there. On your own phone, you can watch the truck come to you. Both come with the Stay-With-You Promise.
