Big state, long gaps
Texas Interstates Run Long. Plan for That.
I-10 runs just under 880 miles across Texas, from Anthony on the New Mexico line through El Paso, San Antonio and Houston to Orange on the Louisiana line. I-35 runs north from Laredo through San Antonio, Austin and Waco, splits into I-35E through Dallas and I-35W through Fort Worth, then rejoins at Denton on the way to the Red River. I-20 heads east from I-10 near Kent, through Dallas-Fort Worth, to the Louisiana line near Waskom. I-45 links Dallas, Houston and Galveston.
The weather depends on which Texas you're in. The Panhandle has colder winters than North Texas, and the Gulf Coast stays mild. El Paso averages 8.7 inches of rain a year, while parts of southeast Texas get as much as 64. Snow falls several times a winter in the Panhandle and the West Texas mountains, once or twice in North Texas, and only every few years in Central and East Texas. So a Texas breakdown might be a dead battery on a freezing Panhandle morning, or a flat on a hot West Texas shoulder.
Texas Transportation Code
Two Texas Laws Worth Knowing
Move over or slow down
Section 545.157 covers stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and TxDOT and highway contract vehicles using their lights. On a highway with two or more lanes going your way, drivers must either leave the lane closest to the stopped vehicle or slow to 20 mph under a posted limit of 25 mph or more, or to 5 mph where the limit is under 25.
After a minor crash on a city freeway
Section 550.022 says that in a metropolitan area, if a crash damages only vehicles and every car can still be driven normally and safely, drivers must move them out of the main lanes as soon as possible, to the frontage road, a nearby cross street or another suitable spot. A car that needs a tow doesn't count as drivable. In that case, get yourself clear of traffic and call.

Tell us the highway, your direction and the nearest mile marker. If a partner can reach that stretch, they'll bring enough fuel to get you to a station. If none can, we'll tell you on the call so you can make another plan quickly.
