Towing in Amarillo, Where I-27 Ends at I-40

Amarillo is a crossroads. I-40 runs east to west straight through the middle of the city. I-27 comes up from Lubbock and ends at I-40, just north of the Potter and Randall county line. From there, the route keeps going into downtown on one-way streets, then heads north toward Dumas. Loop 335 circles the whole city, and in places it's still a two-lane road.

Trouble can start anywhere: on I-40 in a crosswind, on a two-lane stretch of Loop 335, or on a downtown one-way where you can't pull over easily. When you call, a few details get a partner to you faster:

  • On I-40 or I-27, your direction and the nearest exit number or mile marker.
  • On Loop 335, which side of town you're on and the nearest cross road.
  • Downtown, the one-way street you're on, like Buchanan, Pierce, Fillmore or Taylor, and the nearest numbered street. Many downtown streets are named for presidents, in order.
  • On Amarillo Boulevard or Sixth, the old Route 66 roads, the block number.

We text you a locked price before anyone rolls. Then the nearest available partner comes to you with a jump start, a winch-out or a tow, whatever the car needs.

Panhandle weather

Northers, Blizzards, Hail and Wind

Amarillo's weather is known for big swings from one day to the next. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the airport show about 18 inches of snow and about 107 nights at or below freezing each year. Here's what each kind of weather does to a car, and what to do about it.

  • Blue northersArctic air can drop in fast. A battery that started the car at lunch may not start it after dark. Stop cranking after a few tries and call for a jump.
  • BlizzardsSnow and wind together can bury a car on the shoulder. Keep the tailpipe clear if you run the engine for heat, and stay in the car.
  • Hail and spring stormsSevere storms hit mostly from April through July. If hail breaks your windshield and you can't see, don't drive. Ask for a tow.
  • Wind and dustBlowing dust can cut visibility fast. Pull off the pavement as far as you can, turn your lights off and take your foot off the brake.

Texas law

Texas Says Move Over or Slow Down for Your Tow Truck

Texas Transportation Code 545.157 covers stopped tow trucks, emergency vehicles and TxDOT crews with their lights on. On a highway with two or more lanes going their way, drivers must leave the lane closest to the truck. If they don't, they must slow to 20 mph under the posted limit, or to 5 mph where the limit is under 25.

That rule protects your driver while they hook up your car on I-40. It doesn't name a plain stalled car, so don't count on it to protect you. Get as far off the road as you can, keep your hazards on and stay buckled in. Before a long drive in bad weather, check road conditions on DriveTexas, run by TxDOT.

Amarillo questions

Amarillo Towing Questions

I'm traveling through on I-40 and my car broke down. Can you help?

Yes. Tell us your direction and the nearest exit or mile marker. A partner can tow you to a shop in Amarillo. We also help you get a ride and point you to a good repair shop, so you're not stuck on the roadside after.

Can you tow my car from Canyon to Amarillo?

Yes, that's a local tow. Tell us where the car is and which shop or address it's going to. The price you get by text covers that trip.

My car slid off Loop 335 in a snowstorm. Do I need a tow?

Maybe not. If it's close to the road and not damaged, a winch-out can pull it back onto the pavement. If it hit something or won't drive after, it's a tow. We text the price for either one first.

My RV or pickup with a loaded trailer broke down on I-40. Can you tow it?

No. We only handle light-duty vehicles: cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups. RVs, big rigs and loaded trailers need a heavy tow company. If that's you, we'll say so right away so you can call one without losing time.

How do I know the tow truck is really mine?

We text you your driver's name, photo and truck before they get there, and you can track the truck on a map. See the full Stay-With-You Promise.

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Amarillo drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Amarillo Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.
