Michigan law

What Michigan's Move-Over Law Covers

MCL 257.653a protects a stopped authorized emergency vehicle showing flashing red, blue, white or amber lights. Where there are at least two lanes going your way, passing drivers must slow to at least 10 mph under the posted limit and move over at least one lane or two vehicle widths. Where they can't move over, they must still slow by that much. The rule doesn't apply to a vehicle stopped on the other side of a divided highway's median or barrier. Tow trucks are covered: MCL 257.2 counts a road service vehicle with flashing red or amber lights as an emergency vehicle for this section.

The section is written for emergency vehicles. A regular car with its flashers on isn't named, so when you break down, get as far onto the shoulder as you can, and stay belted in if traffic is close.

Downstate and up north

From the I-94 Corridor to the Upper Peninsula

In the south, I-94 is the main road between Chicago and Detroit, and I-96 runs across the state from Detroit to Muskegon, past Lansing and Grand Rapids. I-75 comes up from Ohio through Detroit, Flint, Saginaw and Bay City, then keeps going north to the Mackinac Bridge, which links Mackinaw City with St. Ignace. It ends at Sault Ste. Marie. In the Upper Peninsula, US 2 runs east toward St. Ignace, past Iron Mountain, Escanaba and Manistique, following the north shore of Lake Michigan through two national forests.

The climate splits the same way. The southern and central Lower Peninsula has hot summers and cold winters. The northern Lower Peninsula and the whole Upper Peninsula get shorter summers and longer, colder winters. Heavy lake-effect snow is frequent through the middle of February, and the storms can come on quickly. That's when a winch-out or a jump start gets you moving again.

Michigan Questions

I'm in the Upper Peninsula. Is there a partner up here?

Call and we'll check. It depends on where you are. If no partner can reach your spot yet, we'll tell you on the call instead of making you wait.

Lake-effect snow put me in a ditch. When will help get here?

We don't guess a time before a partner takes the job. Once one does, you get your driver's name and truck by text, plus a link to track the truck on a map.
