Game Day Breakdowns Near Michigan State: A Plan for East Lansing Traffic

If your car breaks down near Spartan Stadium on a Michigan State game day, get out of the traffic flow first. Pull into a lot, a side street or a shoulder, turn on your hazards and stay with the car. Call 911 if you're stuck in a live lane or anyone is hurt. Then call for roadside help and give your lot number or the nearest cross streets in East Lansing, not just "by the stadium."
Why is a game day breakdown in East Lansing different?
On a normal Tuesday, a stall on Grand River Avenue is a hassle. On a home football Saturday, it's a different problem.
Spartan Stadium seats 74,866 people. MSU's own news site quotes its parking unit saying campus sometimes has more than 10,000 cars on it at once. Police from MSU, East Lansing, Meridian Township, the Ingham County Sheriff and Michigan State Police all help run traffic.
That crowd changes three things for you:
- Roads can close. An MSU venue warns that many roads on and around campus may close to incoming traffic at the end of a game. A route you drove in on may not be open on the way out.
- Foot traffic is heavy. The same notice says outbound cars and crowds of people walking slow everything down. Don't stand in the road by your car.
- "Near the stadium" means nothing. Every car on campus is near the stadium. Your driver needs a lot number or two street names.
When are the rest of the 2026 home games?
Here's what MSU Athletics lists for the rest of this season at Spartan Stadium:
| Date | Opponent | Kickoff |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday, October 10 (Homecoming) | Illinois | 3:30 p.m. |
| Saturday, October 17 | Northwestern | To be announced |
| Saturday, November 14 | Washington | To be announced |
| Friday, November 20 | Oregon | 8 p.m. |
Kickoff sets when the lots open. MSU says parking opens at 7 a.m. for games that start before 6 p.m. For kickoffs at 6 p.m. or later, lots open at 11 a.m. The Friday night Oregon game is its own case. Select donor lots open at 11 a.m. and all other lots open at 2 p.m.
MSU asks fans not to show up before those times, because traffic lineups aren't allowed. So don't plan to wait in a line of cars on a campus road. If your car is weak, that's the worst place for it to quit.
Your car won't start in a campus lot after the game. Now what?
Say the Spartans win, you walk back to your lot, and your car just clicks. Your dome light was on during the tailgate. Good news: this one is often a quick fix.
- Stay in your space. Don't try to push the car into the exit lane. You.ll block every car behind you.
- Find your lot number. Campus lots are numbered. Look for the sign, or check your digital parking pass. MSU says football passes are all digital, so you have it on your phone.
- Ask for a jump start. A jump start is often all a drained battery needs.
- Let the lot clear if you can. Exit traffic is heavy right after the game. Your driver has to work through the same traffic you do, so sit tight, stay warm and keep your phone charged.
Tailgating is allowed in all public parking areas on campus, per MSU. That means grills, tents and people all around your car. Clear a path at the front of your car so a driver can pull close.
What if your car dies on Grand River Avenue or US 127?
Game traffic spills far past campus. Grand River Avenue carries M-43 along the north side of campus. US 127 runs north and south between Lansing and East Lansing. Both fill up before and after a game.
On a city street like Grand River
Coast to the curb or turn onto a side street if the car still rolls. Hazards on. Get out on the curb side only, and only if it's safe. With crowds walking to and from the stadium, watch for people around your car before you open a door.
On US 127 or I-496
These are limited access freeways. Michigan law, MCL 257.672, says you can't stop or leave a car on one except in an emergency or for mechanical trouble. A breakdown counts. Still, get as far onto the right shoulder as you can. Stay in your seat with your belt on. Don't walk along the freeway toward an exit.
When police or a tow truck stop near you, other drivers must slow to at least 10 mph under the limit. If they have two or more lanes going their way, they must move over a lane when it's safe. That's Michigan's move-over law, MCL 257.653a. Thick game traffic makes that harder for them, which is one more reason to stay inside your car.
How do you tell your driver where you are on campus?
Campus roads and lots look alike in a crowd. Give your driver these details:
- Lot number or ramp. "Lot 89" beats "a lot south of campus."
- Two street names. For example, Lot 89 sits at the corner of Mt. Hope Road and Farm Lane, where MSU runs its free game day shuttle.
- What's around you. A shuttle stop, a building name, or which side of the Red Cedar River you're on. The river runs right through campus.
- Your car. Color, make and model. Turn on your hazards so your driver can spot you in a sea of cars.
Sharing your phone's location helps too. If you parked in Lot 48 by the Natural Resources Building, MSU's accessible parking area, say so. You enter it from the Trowbridge extension off Red Cedar Road or Farm Lane.
How do you get the latest game day traffic news?
MSU Police and Public Safety sends game day updates by text. Text SPARTANFB26 to 888777 to sign up. MSU says the texts cover safety information, possible game delays and traffic suggestions.
For a driving route that stays open after a game, the MSU venue notice names one: Grand River Avenue to southbound Bogue Street to eastbound Shaw Lane. For freeway closures, check MDOT's Mi Drive map before you leave.
What if your car got towed during the game?
Sentinel doesn't do impounds or private property tows. But if your car is gone from a campus spot, here's what MSU Parking Services says:
- Cars blocking traffic or parked in a fire lane may be towed. So can cars in loading zones, leased spaces, service vehicle spaces, and disabled spaces without a plate or placard.
- Cars towed to MSU's police department can be picked up any time, day or night.
- Bring a valid driver's license and current registration.
- You pay the tow charge and any unpaid parking tickets. Storage fees start after a one day grace period, so go soon.
MSU Parking Services is at 1120 Red Cedar Rd., East Lansing. Call (517) 355-8440 to ask where your car is.
Do you need a tow, or something smaller?
- Dead battery after the tailgate: a jump start.
- Keys locked in the car with the cooler: a car lockout service.
- Stuck in soft grass or mud in an overflow area: a winch-out, if the car is close to the pavement and not damaged.
- Won't run, or it's leaking or smoking: car towing to a shop.
How does Sentinel work on game day?
