Interstates and parkways

How Kentucky's Highways Fit Together

Six major Interstates cross Kentucky: I-24, I-64, I-65, I-69, I-71 and I-75. The state also has seven parkways, built as toll roads, though the last tolls came off in 2006. Rural stretches of the Interstates and parkways can carry a 70 mph limit. That's a lot of fast, open road between exits.

The cooler north and east

The northern counties and the far-eastern mountains average about five degrees cooler than the rest of the state, all year. Days below freezing climb from about 60 a year in the southwest to more than 100 in the far north and far east. More freezing mornings means more chances of a battery that won't turn over and needs a jump start.

The wetter south and west

Rain rises from 38 to 40 inches a year in the north to about 50 in the south. Somerset, in the south-central part of the state, gets about ten more inches a year than Covington. Summers are hot and humid, and a wet shoulder is a hard place to change a tire. A partner can do the tire change for you, or tow the car if the spare won't do.

Kentucky law

Kentucky's Move-Over Law Includes Your Car

KRS 189.930, as updated in July 2024, covers stopped emergency and public safety vehicles with flashing lights. It also covers a disabled vehicle showing emergency flashers, flares or reflective signals. On a highway with at least four lanes and two or more your way, passing drivers must move to a lane that isn't next to the stopped vehicle when it's safe. If they can't, they must slow down. So put your flashers on as soon as you stop. Road conditions are on the state's GoKY site.

Can you help on a parkway, or only on the Interstates?

Either one, as long as a partner covers that stretch. Tell us the parkway, your direction and the nearest exit or mile marker. If no partner can reach you there yet, we'll tell you right away.
