Where Colorado Springs Drivers Get Stuck
Colorado Springs covers more ground than any other city in the state. It sits over a mile high, right where the plains run into the mountains. That mix of long drives, big hills and fast weather changes means a breakdown can happen almost anywhere. These are the main corridors.
- I-25Nearly 18 miles through the city, from south of Academy Boulevard to north of North Gate Boulevard. North of Monument it tops out at Monument Hill, about 7,350 feet up.
- Powers BoulevardState Highway 21, the east side's semi-expressway from Black Forest down to Fountain.
- US 24 and Ute PassWest through Ute Pass toward Woodland Park, and east along Platte Avenue out past Falcon.
- Nevada Avenue and SH 115SH 115 runs north along the western edge of Fort Carson and merges into Nevada Avenue at the city limits.
Wherever you are, call and describe what the car is doing. We text a locked price, then send the nearest available partner. Slid off on a snowy morning? That's a winch-out. Won't crank after a cold night? A jump start. Won't drive at all? A tow to your home or your shop.
Front Range weather
Sunny One Day, Snowing the Next
Weather here swings hard. Chinook winds can warm up a winter day fast, and a cold front can undo it overnight. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Colorado Springs airport show about 38 inches of snow a year and about 157 nights at or below freezing. On about 22 days a year, the high never gets above freezing.
Here's the part that catches people: spring is often the worst of it. March is usually the snowiest month, and most of the city's heaviest one-day snowfalls on record came between March and May. Just when you've taken the ice scraper out of the car, a heavy, wet storm drops on I-25.
- Keep winter gear in the car until May. A blanket, a scraper, water and a phone charger.
- Slid into a ditch on Powers or a side street? Stop spinning the tires. It digs you in deeper. Call for a winch-out.
- Battery quits after a cold night? Don't keep cranking. A jump works best while the battery still has a little charge.
- Heading over Monument Hill or up Ute Pass? Check COtrip, the Colorado Department of Transportation's road conditions site, first.
Colorado law
Colorado's Move-Over Law Covers Stalled Cars, Too
Colorado's rule, C.R.S. 42-4-705, protects more than police and tow trucks. It also covers any stopped car showing its hazard lights. On a road with two or more lanes going the same way, drivers must move at least one lane away from you. If they can't, they must slow down.
The law even spells out what counts as slow enough. Where the limit is under 45 mph, 25 mph or less is presumed safe. Where it's 45 or more, drivers are expected to go 20 mph under the limit.
So the moment you stop, hit your hazards. Then stay in the car with your belt on while you wait. Your partner truck gets the same protection when it pulls in with its yellow lights flashing.

Just outside the city, we cover Manitou Springs, Cimarron Hills, Stratmoor, Security-Widefield, Fountain, Black Forest, Falcon and Monument. Colorado Springs questions
What People in Colorado Springs Ask
I slid off the road in a spring storm. Do I need a tow or a winch-out?
If the car is close to the road and not damaged, a winch-out pulls it back onto solid ground so you can drive away. If it hit something or won't drive after, you need a tow. We text you the price for either before a partner heads out.
Can you get to me on I-25 over Monument Hill during a storm?
If the road is open, a partner may be able to reach you, but storms can slow everyone down. Stay in the car, keep your hazards on and call. We check on you by text until the truck arrives, so you're not left guessing.
Do you tow cars up Ute Pass to Woodland Park?
Sometimes. It depends on where the car is going and whether a partner can make the trip. Ask on the call. You'll get a yes or no, and a price, before anything happens.
Will my family know where I am?
If you want them to. Give us one number, and we text them your location and when the truck should arrive. You can also track the truck yourself. See every part of the Stay-With-You Promise.
