Sudden Weather Near Garden of the Gods: What to Do If Your Car Quits

If your car quits near Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs and a storm builds, stay inside the car. Close the windows. The National Weather Service says a hard-topped car gives excellent protection from lightning. Pull fully off the one-way park road, turn on your hazards and note the nearest landmark. Then call for help from your seat, not from under a tree or out on the rocks.

Why does the weather change so fast at Garden of the Gods?

The park sits right where the city meets the foothills. Storms that form over the mountains can roll down onto the red rocks fast.

The National Weather Service office in Pueblo puts it plainly. In Colorado, thunderstorms typically develop in the mountains after 11 a.m. That is why it tells hikers to be heading down by late morning.

So a clear, warm morning at Balanced Rock can turn into a loud afternoon. Your car might pick that exact moment to die. A dead battery after the A/C ran in the main lot. A flat on Juniper Way Loop. A car that won't restart at the South Garden lot. The problem is small, but the sky makes it urgent.

Should I stay in my car during lightning?

Yes. This is the one rule to remember. The Weather Service says an enclosed hard-topped car offers excellent protection from lightning. The metal shell carries the strike around you, as long as the windows are closed.

  • Stay in your seat with the windows up and doors shut.
  • Don't wait outside by the car. The rubber tires don't protect you out there. Anything outside is at risk.
  • Stay away from lone trees and tall rocks. The Weather Service says to move away from tall, isolated objects.
  • Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before you step out to check a tire or the hood.

Hikers who are out on the trails need shelter too. If friends are walking back to the car, let them in and close up. "When thunder roars, go indoors" is the Weather Service motto. Your hard-topped car counts.

What if hail starts while I'm stuck?

Hail often occurs in Colorado, the Weather Service says. Stones here range from pea size up to softball size. Big hail can crack glass.

Stay in the car. Move to the middle of the seat if you can, away from the windows. Cover your face with a jacket or a bag. If you have kids along, have them get down low and cover their heads. Wait for the hail to pass before you look at any damage.

If you are still rolling when hail hits, don't stop in a traffic lane. Pull fully into a lot or onto a wide shoulder, then wait it out.

Can heavy rain flood the roads near the park?

It can. The Weather Service defines a flash flood as a sudden rise in water along a creek or even normally dry land. Steep ground near the foothills sends water downhill fast.

Here is the rule that matters most for drivers. Nearly half of all flash flood deaths are vehicle related. Just 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars. Two feet can carry away SUVs and trucks.

  • Never drive into water running across a road. You can't see how deep it is.
  • Never drive around barriers on a flooded road. The road under it may be gone.
  • If your car stalls in rising water, call 911 right away.

Turn around, don't drown. A tow can wait until the water drops.

Where exactly am I? How do I describe it?

Garden of the Gods has a lot of roads that look alike. Many are one-way loops with bike lanes. "I'm in the park" is not enough for your driver. Use the names on the city's park map:

If you are nearTell us this
The Visitor and Nature Center1805 N. 30th Street, at Gateway Road
The big rocks and main trailMain Parking Lot
The south end trailsSouth Garden lot
Balanced RockBalanced Rock area
The road heading up toward the forestRampart Range Road, past the park gate

Then add the details that help most:

  • Which way the one-way road was taking you.
  • The last sign or parking area you passed.
  • Whether you're in a lot, a pullout or on the road itself.
  • A pin from your phone's map app, sent by text when we ask.

What about Rampart Range Road?

Rampart Range Road starts at a gate inside Garden of the Gods. From there it climbs into the Pike National Forest. It feels close to town, but it is a forest road, not a city street.

The U.S. Forest Service closes it to motor vehicles every winter, from December 1 to April 1. The current order runs through April 1, 2027. Don't try to drive past a closed gate. If you have questions about the road, the Pikes Peak Ranger District number is (719) 636-1602.

In the warm months, a storm up there is a bigger deal than one in the park. You're farther from help, with fewer people driving past. If you slide off the edge into soft dirt, don't spin your tires. Ask about a winch-out if the car is close to the road. Tell us honestly how far off it sits and how steep it is. Some spots need more than a light-duty truck can safely do, and we'll tell you that up front.

When is the park closed to cars?

The park is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. from November through April. From May through October it stays open until 10 p.m.

The city also runs Motorless Mornings. On those days, no cars are allowed in the park from 5 a.m. to noon. In 2026 the dates were April 26 and October 4. If your car quits on a nearby street during one, your driver can't come in to the park roads. Pick a meeting spot outside, like 30th Street.

Which roadside help fits my problem?

Most car trouble at the park isn't a big tow. Match the problem to the job:

  • Car clicks and won't crank after a long stop: a jump start.
  • Flat tire and your spare is good: a spare tire change. Wait out any lightning first.
  • Slid off into dirt or mud near the road: a winch-out.
  • Smoke, a leak, or it won't run after a jump: a car tow to a shop.

Leaving the park on the way home? The map shows Garden of the Gods Road leading to I-25, and Highway 24 nearby. If you stop on one of those, pull far right and turn on your hazards. Colorado's move-over law, C.R.S. 42-4-705, covers a stopped car with its hazards on. Check COtrip for highway closures after a big storm.

How does Sentinel help when a storm hits?

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. We don't own trucks. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. We text your price before dispatch, so you can say yes while you sit dry in your car. Then we stay with you by text until the truck arrives. That is our Stay-With-You Promise. You get your driver's name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

For winter weather and more about the area, see our Colorado Springs towing page. If anyone is hurt, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.
