The Manatee River Crossing: What Actually Helps When You Break Down in Bradenton

If a tire goes soft or the car starts acting up as you head over the Manatee River in Bradenton, keep rolling if the car still moves. Clear the span first, then stop in a lot or on a side street. Florida law bars stopping on a bridge unless traffic or a true breakdown forces it. If you're stuck in a live lane or anyone is hurt, call 911 first.

Which Manatee River crossing are you on?

Three roads take you over the river between Bradenton and Palmetto. Each one plays out a little differently when something goes wrong.

CrossingRoadWhere you come off
Hernando DeSoto BridgeUS 41 and US 301 togetherBradenton on the south end, Palmetto on the north
Green BridgeUS 41 BusinessDowntown Bradenton to Palmetto
I-75 river bridgeI-75Between exit 220 (SR 64) and exit 224 (US 301 at Ellenton)

Know which one you're on before you call. "The bridge" means three places here. "Southbound on the Green Bridge, almost to downtown" means one.

Why get off the span before you stop?

A bridge has no lot, no grass and no side street. There's no safe place for you to stand. A driver who comes to help has the same problem.

Florida law backs this up. Under s. 316.1945, you may not stop or park on a bridge or other raised road. The exceptions are when you must stop to avoid other traffic, or when the law, a police officer or a traffic signal tells you to.

So a slow leak is not a reason to stop on the DeSoto. Drive gently to the far end. A few hundred feet on a soft tire is usually better than a flat-tire change next to moving traffic.

What if the car truly can't go on?

Then stop as far right as you can and turn your hazards on. Florida law lets you flash your lights to show you're stopped or disabled. Stay in your seat with your belt on. A damaged car that blocks traffic should be moved off the road when that's reasonably possible, under s. 316.061. But don't push a car on a bridge yourself. If you're in a lane, call 911.

Is I-75 over the river any different?

Yes. I-75 is a limited access road, and Florida treats its shoulder as its own case. A car that broke down there can sit on the shoulder for up to 6 hours. Stopping on the paved part of an on-ramp or off-ramp is not allowed.

So if your car fails on I-75 near the river, get onto the right shoulder, as far over as you can. Then tell the dispatcher three things:

  • Northbound or southbound.
  • The last exit you passed, 220 or 224.
  • Whether you're on the bridge itself or past it.

FDOT also runs Road Rangers, a free highway help patrol on busy freeway stretches. They can change a flat or clear a stalled car from a lane. Dial *347 on your cell phone to ask for one. One may not be close by, so it's fine to call for roadside help too.

Why does Bradenton heat make a slow leak worse?

Bradenton is hot most of the year. NOAA's normals for the Bradenton station show about 83 days a year at 90°F or hotter.

A tire that's a little low still drives. But it flexes more with every turn, and a soft tire on hot pavement doesn't stay "a little low" for long. That's how a leak you meant to fix this weekend becomes a flat at the foot of the bridge.

A few habits help before you cross:

  1. Use the pressure on the sticker in your driver's door jamb or glove box, or in your owner's manual. The number on the tire's side is the maximum, not the right pressure.
  2. If the tire pressure light comes on, take the next easy stop. Don't wait until after the river.
  3. Look at your spare now. A flat spare turns a tire change into a tow.
  4. If one tire keeps going low, get it checked. A leak tends to come back.

Where is a safe spot to wait near the river?

Once you're off the span, look for a place where you can open your door without traffic beside you. A business lot, a side street or a wide paved turnoff works.

Then make yourself easy to find:

  • Name the nearest cross street or business sign.
  • Say which side of the river you're on: Bradenton or Palmetto.
  • Say whether you came off the DeSoto, the Green Bridge or I-75.
  • Give your car's make, model and color.

If you've stopped on a shoulder, keep your hazards on. Under Florida's Move Over Act, a disabled car with hazard lights on gets the same space as a police car. Drivers must leave the lane next to you on a road with two or more lanes their way. If they can't, they must slow to 20 mph under the limit. Don't stand by the car to test that.

Is there road work near the river crossings?

When this was written, FDOT's weekly road report for October 4 to 10, 2026, listed several jobs on the roads that feed the crossings:

  • S.R. 55, 23rd Avenue W to 39th Street E: night lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, October 5, through Thursday, October 8. Striping crews were working from 39th Street E to Riverfront Boulevard and the Manatee River Bridge, moving slowly in a convoy. Daytime closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., October 5 to 9, for sign work.
  • U.S. 301 north of the Moccasin Wallow roundabouts: night paving from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through October 31, with lane shifts and flaggers.
  • U.S. 41 at Seaport Manatee: a detour from U.S. 41 to Reeder Road through December 1, 2026.

A work zone may have cones where a shoulder used to be. If you break down in one, tell the dispatcher, so your driver knows to expect no room. Before a night drive over the river, check FL511 for closures.

Flat tire, dead battery or tow: what do you need?

Tell us what the car is doing, not only that you're stuck. It changes who comes and what they bring.

  • Flat with a good spare: a flat tire change puts your spare on so you can drive to a tire shop.
  • Flat with no spare, or two flats: a car tow to a shop on your side of the river.
  • Car won't start after a stop: a jump start often gets you going.
  • Keys locked inside while you checked the tire: a car lockout service opens the door.

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. We text you a locked price before anyone is sent. Then we check on you by text until your driver arrives. The Stay-With-You Promise spells out how that works. For more on the bridges, beaches and storms around town, see our Bradenton towing page.

Manatee River Breakdown Questions

Can I stop on the DeSoto Bridge to change a flat?

Florida law bars stopping on a bridge unless you must. If the car still rolls, drive slowly to the end of the span and stop in a lot or side street. If you're stuck in a lane, call 911.

How long can my car sit on the I-75 shoulder near the river?

Florida law lets a disabled car stay on the shoulder of a limited access road like I-75 for up to 6 hours. Don't stop on a ramp. Stay in the car with your belt on while you wait.

Is there free help on I-75 in Bradenton?

FDOT runs Road Rangers, a free patrol on busy freeway stretches. Dial *347 on a cell phone to ask for one. They can change a flat or move a stalled car out of a lane, but one may not be nearby.

What tire pressure should I use in the heat?

Use the number on the sticker in your driver's door jamb or glove box, or in your owner's manual. Don't use the maximum printed on the tire. If one tire keeps going low, have the leak found.
