Grande Prairie towing

Towing in Grande Prairie, North, South, East and West

Grande Prairie grew up where Highway 43 meets Highway 40, in the middle of the Peace Country. Farmland rolls away on three sides, and boreal forest rises to the south. When you call, tell us which way you were headed. That tells us more than an address.

North: Highway 2 and the Four Mile Interchange

Inside the city, Highway 2 is 100 Street. A few kilometers north, it meets Highway 43 at the Four Mile Interchange, then carries on through Clairmont and Sexsmith toward Peace River. A stall on 100 Street is a city tow. A stall past Clairmont is a highway job, so give us the nearest road or landmark.

West: the Highway 43 bypass

Since the bypass opened fully in September 2019, Highway 43 skirts the northwest corner of the city, from the Four Mile Interchange to just west of the airport. Out past the airport, 43 heads to Wembley and Beaverlodge, then on to the B.C. line. The old route along 100 Avenue and 108 Street is now a city road.

South: Highway 40 over the Wapiti

Highway 40 is the main way in from the south. It crosses the Wapiti River just south of town and runs on to Grande Cache and Jasper. Grande Cache is a long drive south, past the Grovedale turnoff. If you're heading that way, fill up first. If you run dry, ask for fuel delivery.

East: Highway 43 toward Valleyview

East of the city, the twinned highway runs past Bezanson and across the Smoky River on its way to Valleyview and Edmonton. If you have to stop, get fully onto the shoulder and keep your seatbelt on.

After a fender bender

After a Collision in Grande Prairie, You Pick the Tow

The City of Grande Prairie says drivers can use any available towing operator after a collision, unless police are seizing the car as evidence. You can choose your own provider up until the City's towing contractor has been dispatched. After that call is made, a cancellation fee applies. So if you want Sentinel, call us first.

Under Alberta law, a collision with injuries, or with total damage over five thousand dollars, must be reported to police. In Grande Prairie, the Collision Reporting office is at 10 Knowledge Way, south entrance. The city notes a tow company can take you and your car straight there.

Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your car and we text you the photos. After a crash, that record is worth having. Read how it works on the City of Grande Prairie collision page and on our Stay-With-You Promise page.

Give the truck room

Alberta's move-over rule covers tow trucks. Pass a stopped one with its lights flashing and you must use the far lane. No safe lane? Slow to 60 km/h, or the posted limit if it's lower. It's on the Government of Alberta site.

Peace Country Winters and Parking Bans

Winters here are long and snowy. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for the Grande Prairie airport show about 154 cm a year, with snow 20 cm deep or more on about 61 days. Lows dip below minus 20 C on about 42 days, and fog shows up on about 28.

  • Declared parking bans. When the city declares one, you can't park on Priority 1 and Priority 2 roads from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday. Cars on snow routes during a ban can be fined or towed.
  • Priority 1 roads. 100 Street, 84 Avenue, 68 Avenue, Resources Road and Wapiti Road are cleared first.
  • Parked too long. A car left more than 72 hours on a residential street is treated as abandoned and may be removed.
  • Cold starts. A dead battery on a minus 30 morning is a jump start. A car buried by a plow ridge that won't budge is a winch-out.

Check the city's parking ban page during a storm, and 511 Alberta before a highway trip.

Grande Prairie Towing Questions

Police are at my crash. Do I have to take the city's tow?

Not always. The city says you can choose your own towing provider until its contractor has been dispatched. The exception is when police seize the car as evidence. Tell the officer you have a tow coming, and call us right away.

I slid off Highway 40 near the Wapiti. Can you get me out?

If the car is stuck but not damaged, a winch-out may be all it takes. If it's damaged, it needs a tow. Either way, we text you the price before the truck heads out.

Can I get a text when the truck is close?

Yes. We check on you by text while you wait, and you'll see your driver's name, photo and truck. We can also text one family member your spot and arrival time.

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Grande Prairie

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Grande Prairie drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Grande Prairie Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
