How Tow Prices Work in Omaha, and How to Avoid Surprise Fees

An Omaha tow price comes from the job, not a menu. The truck's miles to you and to the shop, your vehicle, what failed and where the car sits all move it. A tow you call for yourself should come with a price before the truck rolls. A tow you never asked for, from a private lot, is capped by Omaha code 20-163 and Nebraska law.
What goes into the price of an Omaha tow?
Your car quits on the West Dodge Road freeway, out past I-680. Your shop is downtown near the Old Market. That's a long haul across the metro. The same tow from a lot in Midtown to a shop six blocks away is a short one. Same truck, very different job.
Here is what a dispatcher asks about, and why each one matters:
- Where you are. The truck has to drive to you first. A spot on the edge of the metro, like Bennington, Valley or Gretna, adds miles.
- Where the car is going. The haul to the shop or home is the other big piece.
- What you drive. A small sedan, an all-wheel-drive SUV and a light pickup each load a bit differently.
- What went wrong. A car that rolls in neutral is simple. A locked wheel or a crushed corner takes more work.
- Where it sits. Flat pavement is easy. A car slid off the shoulder into snow may need a winch-out before anyone can tow it.
Do you need a tow at all?
Ask this before you ask about price. Many Omaha calls don't need a tow.
NOAA's normals for Eppley Airfield show about 9 nights a year at zero or colder. On about 40 days, the high stays at or below freezing. Cold like that drains weak batteries overnight. If your car clicks in a parking lot on a January morning, a jump start may be all it needs. That's a smaller job than a tow.
Tell the dispatcher what the car is doing. "It clicks but won't crank." "It ran out of gas on I-680." "It slid into the ditch, but it drives." The right job is often the cheaper one.
How do Omaha distances change the price?
The metro is wide, and five freeways tie it together: I-80, I-480, I-680, I-29 and US 75, which runs as the North Freeway and the JFK Freeway. Bellevue sits just south of the city. Elkhorn, now part of Omaha, is out west.
So decide where the car goes before you call. You have three good choices:
- The nearest good shop. A short haul keeps the mileage part small.
- Your own mechanic. Worth the extra miles if they know the car or do your warranty work.
- Home. Fine if the shop is closed and you'd rather sort it out tomorrow.
Give a clear spot, too. Omaha runs about 12 blocks to the mile, so the nearest numbered street and cross street help. On the freeway, give the direction and the last exit you passed. A truck that finds you fast wastes no miles.
What about a tow across the river to Council Bluffs?
Say so when you call. The trip into Iowa is part of the distance, like any other. If a partner can make it, the price you get by text covers it.
My car was towed from an Omaha parking lot. What can they charge?
This is where surprise fees show up. Sentinel doesn't do these tows. But knowing the rules can save you money.
Omaha Municipal Code 20-163 covers a tow from private property that the car's owner didn't ask for. It sets a top limit on three charges:
- The towing charge
- An administrative fee
- A daily storage fee
The tow must also follow Nebraska's restricted lot laws, sections 60-2401 to 60-2411. If it doesn't, nobody can demand a fee or hold a lien on your car. They have to release it to you.
What Nebraska law gives you
- A posted sign. The lot's signs must show the parking purpose, the hours and who to contact about a towed car.
- A free return if you parked legally. If your car wasn't parked wrong, whoever ordered the tow must return it at no charge.
- The right to stop the hookup. Catch the driver before your car is fully attached, and they must unhook it if you ask.
- Damage protection. The tower answers for damage during hookup and towing. The storage lot answers for damage to the car and your things inside.
- A written statement. When you get the car back, you get a paper naming who had it towed, under what law, and your rights.
- Your things stay yours. The tower's lien covers the car, not the contents inside it.
- No kickbacks. The lot owner can't take a commission or gift from the tow company.
Why storage is the fee to watch
Storage adds up each day the car sits. Nebraska lets the tower charge a reasonable cost and keep the car until it's paid. After 90 days, the tower can dispose of it. The tower must mail you a certified notice within 15 business days. It lists the daily storage fee and what you owe so far. Don't wait for that letter. Find the car and get it out.
What if the fees look wrong?
Charging more than the city maximum breaks 20-163. So does a tow from a lot with no proper signs. Call the Omaha Police non-emergency line at 402-444-5600 and report it as an unauthorized tow. Nebraska law also makes the tower report each lot tow and your plate number to local police. That's how police can tell you who has your car.
Not every tow falls under 20-163. It doesn't cover a tow ordered by police after a crash onto private property. It doesn't cover court-ordered tows or city nuisance tows either. A police tow goes to the city impound lot. Our Omaha impound lot guide walks through that release.
How do you keep your own tow price from changing?
When you call for help yourself, settle the price before the truck leaves. Ask three things:
- What does the price include?
- What happens if the car is stuck deeper than I said?
- Can I get it in writing, even a text?
That's how Sentinel works. Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company in the Omaha area does the job. Before we dispatch, we text you your price. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first, and you decide. Then we check on you by text until the truck arrives. That's our Stay-With-You Promise. Your driver also photographs all four sides of your car before hookup.
We won't claim to be the cheapest tow in Omaha. We promise no surprise after you say yes. To see what a car tow includes, start there. For the freeways and areas a partner covers, see our Omaha towing page.
What should you do while you wait on an Omaha freeway?
Turn your hazards on. Stay buckled in the car if you're on the shoulder. Nebraska's move-over law, section 60-6,378, tells drivers on a highway like I-80 to move a lane away from a stopped car when they can, or slow down when they can't. It covers any stopped car with someone in it or near it.
About 27 inches of snow falls at Eppley Airfield in a normal year. Before you pick a route to the shop in a storm, check Nebraska 511 for closures. If anyone is hurt or you're stuck in a live lane, call 911 first.

Omaha Tow Price Questions
Is there a limit on what an Omaha parking lot tow can cost?
Yes. Omaha code 20-163 caps the towing charge, an administrative fee and the daily storage fee for a tow from private property you didn't ask for. A tower that charges more breaks the code. Report it to Omaha Police as an unauthorized tow.
Can I stop a tow truck from taking my car out of a lot?
Under Nebraska law, the tower doesn't have the car until it's fully attached. Before that, the driver must unhook it if you ask. Stay calm and ask clearly.
Do I have to pay to get my stuff out of a towed car?
Nebraska's tow lien covers the car, not what's inside it. The storage lot is also liable for damage to your things while it holds the car. Ask the lot when you can come for your belongings.
Does a tow cost more if I'm stuck in snow?
It can, because the job is bigger. A car in a ditch may need a winch-out before it can be towed. If the car still drives, the winch-out alone may do it. Your price is texted and locked before dispatch either way.
