North Bay Tow Costs: The Real Variables Where Highways 11 and 17 Meet

A tow price in North Bay, Ontario, comes down to where your car is and where it has to go. North Bay is where Highway 11 and Highway 17 meet. A stall on the way in from Temagami, Sudbury, Mattawa or Callander is a different trip from a stall on a city street. Your vehicle, what went wrong, winter and the drop-off spot fill in the rest.

Why does it matter which highway you were on?

Four highways feed into North Bay, and each one leaves town in a different direction. Your driver starts from wherever they are. The road you broke down on decides how far they go to reach you, and how far your car rides back.

HighwayWhere it goes from North Bay
Highway 11 northUp Thibeault Hill, then 370 km to Cochrane, past Temagami and Temiskaming Shores
Highway 11 southA freeway toward Callander, Powassan, Trout Creek, Barrie and Toronto
Highway 17 westToward Sturgeon Falls and Sudbury
Highway 17 eastAlong the Mattawa River to Mattawa, then toward Ottawa
Highway 6363.5 km northeast to the Quebec line, where it becomes Route 101 into Témiscaming
Highway 94A 12 km bypass on the southeast side, past Corbeil

A car that quits on Highway 11 near Marten River is a long way from a car that quits by the college. Both are "North Bay" when you call. So the first thing to say is the highway and your direction.

Does the shared stretch through town change things?

Yes, in a good way for you. Inside the city, Highways 11 and 17 run as one road for 4.1 km. It goes from the Twin Lakes interchange in the east to Algonquin Avenue in the west.

This part is not a full freeway. Big streets cross it at grade, and small streets end at service roads beside it. That gives you more ways off than on an open stretch of highway. If your car is still rolling, a service road or a side street is a much easier pickup than the shoulder of a four-lane road.

West of town, Highway 17 is an undivided four-lane expressway. There is no barrier between you and oncoming traffic. A stall there takes more care, so tell your driver which side of the road you are on.

How does distance shape a tow price near North Bay?

Out here, towns are far apart. That is most of what changes the trip. Think about two things before you call.

How far is your driver from you?

Highway 11 north of the city runs through long stretches of bush and rock. The Huntsville to North Bay section of Highway 11 south is 120 km on its own. A breakdown deep on one of these roads means more driving to reach you than a dead car in a Gateway driveway.

Where should the car go?

This is the part you control. Ontario lets you choose where your car is towed. Pick one of these before you call:

  • The closest good shop. If you broke down near Callander or Corbeil, a shop in North Bay may be a short trip.
  • Your home. Fine if the car can sit a day or two. Check the parking rules first (see below).
  • Your own mechanic in another town. A longer trip. Ask yourself if the car could be fixed closer and driven home later.

If you were on Highway 63 near the Quebec line, think hard about the drop-off. A short tow back into North Bay may beat a long one somewhere else.

What road work is going on near North Bay?

Ontario's 2025 to 2028 Northern Highways Program lists work on the roads around the city. Work zones can mean narrow shoulders and concrete barriers. A stall boxed in by barriers takes longer to set up and load.

  1. Birches Road, south of North Bay. Highway 11 overpasses and rail overheads are getting bridge repairs. The program lists this as underway, with a 2026 target.
  2. Trout Creek. The Highway 11 underpasses at McCarthy Street, McFadden Line and Highway 522 are also underway, with a 2026 target. More bridge work at Trout Creek is planned for 2027 to 2028.
  3. North of Marten River. A resurfacing job on Highway 11 is planned for 2027 to 2028. A new rest area at Marten River is also planned.

The province says timing can change. Check Ontario 511 before a trip, or dial 511 for the hands-free line. One more note: on Highway 11 south, a few at-grade intersections remain, mostly between Trout Creek and Callander. Cars can turn across the highway there, so pull as far right as you can.

Does winter change the job?

Often. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for the North Bay airport show about 300 cm of snow a year. Freezing rain or drizzle falls on about 18 days. Lows drop below minus 20 C on about 30 days. The airport sits at 358 m, well above downtown at 201 m.

Here is how winter shows up in the job itself:

  • A dead battery is not always a tow. On a cold morning, a jump start may get you going right where you are.
  • A slide into the snowbank is not always a tow. If the car is not damaged and a truck can reach it, a winch-out may put it back on the road.
  • Unplowed side streets take longer to reach. The city starts on main roads first. It says clearing residential streets could take 16 to 24 hours after the snow stops.

The city's overnight parking ban runs from November 1 to April 15. On most streets it covers 3 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. A car that dies at the curb on a winter night should not sit there through the ban. Ontario's Highway Traffic Act also bars parking that gets in the way of snow clearing.

What else changes a North Bay tow price?

The roads are the local part. These count everywhere:

  • What you drive. A small car hooks up fast. An all-wheel-drive SUV or a light pickup may need a flatbed car tow.
  • What went wrong. A car with soft brakes after Thibeault Hill should not be driven at all. A flat with a good spare may just need a tire change.
  • Where exactly it sits. A level lot at Nipissing University or Canadore is easy. A ditch off Highway 17 near Bonfield is not.
  • Which side of the road. A driver coming from the wrong direction has to find a safe place to turn around and come back.

What does Ontario say about tow rates?

Ontario has clear rules for anyone who tows your car. The province's tow rights page says:

  • Your consent comes first. Unless police or an authorized official started the tow, the operator needs your OK.
  • You choose. You pick the tow company and where the car goes.
  • Rates before the tow. The operator must give you their maximum rate schedule. They can't charge more than those rates, and they can't charge fuel surcharges.
  • The direct route. Your driver must take the most direct route to your drop-off.
  • A clear bill. You see an itemized invoice before you pay, and you choose cash, debit or credit.

Every tow truck must show the company name and its certificate number. You can look up an operator's rates and status in the province's published rates portal.

North Bay Tow Price Questions

Why can a tow from Highway 11 north of North Bay cost more than one in town?

It is usually a longer trip. Highway 11 runs 370 km north to Cochrane, with long gaps between towns. Your driver drives farther to reach you, and your car rides farther back. You see the price by text before anyone is sent.

Can I choose where my car is towed in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario says you choose where your vehicle is towed, unless police or an official started the tow. Pick a shop close to where you broke down to keep the trip short.

My car slid off Highway 17 into the snow. Is that a tow?

Not always. If the car isn't damaged and a truck can reach it, a winch-out may pull it back onto the road. If it won't steer or brake right, it needs a tow.

Can my Sentinel price change once the truck arrives?

Not without your OK. Your price is locked by text before dispatch. If the job turns out different, we text a new price first, and you decide.

Rules change, so check the official source before you rely on it. Sources: Ontario: your rights when getting a tow, Ontario Northern Highways Program 2025 to 2028, Ontario 511, North Bay: on-street parking, North Bay: when it snows, Highway Traffic Act, Environment Canada climate normals.
