Why Tow Prices Vary in Lexington, Kentucky: New Circle, Commuter Towns and Who Called the Truck

Tow prices in Lexington vary mostly by the trip. A car that dies inside New Circle Road and goes to a shop nearby is a short haul. A car that quits out in horse farm country, or on the way home to Georgetown or Nicholasville, rides a lot farther. Your vehicle, what broke and how it's stuck matter too. So does who called the truck: you, or the police.
Why does New Circle Road matter so much for a Lexington tow?
New Circle Road is the loop around central Lexington. Most of the city's shops, homes and campus sit inside it. Outside it, the city thins out fast.
You don't have to take our word that the loop is a real price line. The University of Kentucky runs a motorist help program for its permit holders through a contracted tow company. UK's own page lists one flat rate for help inside New Circle Road. Outside the loop, it adds a charge for every mile. That's one official Lexington example of what you'll see in most tow pricing: distance counts.
So before you call, figure out which side of New Circle you're on. Then think about where the car needs to end up.
What makes one Lexington tow cost more than another?
Every quote comes from the same handful of answers. Have them ready.
- The pickup spot. The road, your direction and the nearest cross street or exit.
- The drop-off spot. Your home, your mechanic or the closest shop that's open.
- The vehicle. A small sedan is a simple load. A lifted pickup or an all-wheel-drive SUV may need a flatbed.
- What went wrong. A car that rolls and steers loads fast. A locked wheel or crash damage takes longer.
- Where it's stuck. A flat lot is easy. A car nosed into a muddy ditch on a farm road needs a pull out first.
You can't change most of these once you're stranded. You can change the drop-off spot, and sometimes you can skip the tow.
Why is a tow home to Georgetown or Nicholasville a longer trip?
Lexington pulls in a big crowd of commuters from the towns around it. Georgetown, Nicholasville, Winchester, Versailles and Paris all feed into the city each day. When your car dies on the drive in, your usual mechanic may be back home in your town.
That's the trap. You break down on Nicholasville Road inside New Circle, but your shop is in Nicholasville. Or you stall on Newtown Pike, and your shop is in Georgetown. A tow to the home shop can be many times longer than a tow to a shop a few blocks away.
Neither choice is wrong. Just know that the farther shop makes a longer trip. Ask yourself:
- Do I trust a shop near the breakdown with this repair?
- Is my home shop open right now, or will the car sit outside overnight?
- Could the car go home tonight and to the shop later?
Does it cost more to get towed from horse farm country?
It often means more miles. Back in 1958, Lexington drew the first urban growth boundary in the country. New building stays inside an urban service area, and the land outside is kept for horse farms. Rural lots there have a 40-acre minimum.
That's great for the view. For a tow, it means homes and shops are spread far apart once you leave the service area. A breakdown on a two-lane road past the farms is a long drive from most repair shops. If you live out there, pick a shop ahead of time, before you ever need one.
Winter adds a step
Lexington averages 14.5 inches of snow a year and about 90 nights at or below freezing. Slide off a farm road on an icy night, and your car may need a winch-out before it can go anywhere. If it still drives after it's back on the road, that may be the whole job. If not, it's a winch-out and a tow.
Can a smaller service replace the tow?
Often, yes. A lot of Lexington calls never need a hookup at all.
- It clicks or won't turn over. Try a jump start first. Cold nights are hard on weak batteries.
- You're on the UK campus. UK lists free on-campus jump starts for permit holders, campus patients and visitors, any hour, any day. Call UK Transportation Services at 859-257-5757 during office hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Their page lists a separate number after hours.
- Flat tire, good spare. Your driver can put the spare on, and you drive to a tire shop yourself.
- It won't drive, or it's leaking or smoking. That's a real tow. Have a shop picked before you call.
Is a police tow in Lexington priced the same way?
No. Kentucky law says a tow company must use one rate sheet for every customer. There's one carve-out: rates a company has worked out in a contract with a police agency. So when police order the tow after a crash, the price may follow that deal, not the company's regular sheet.
In Lexington, cars towed by police or LexPark go to a lot at 757 E. Seventh St. To pick one up, bring a driver's license and proof of registration. The lot charges for towing and storage. Sentinel doesn't do impounds or police tows. If your car won't start once it's released, a tow from the lot to a shop is something we can help with.
Towed from a private lot instead? The signs there should name the tow company. If you can't find out who has your car, Lexington Police list a Central Records Reports Desk at (859) 258-3563, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Can I choose my own tow after a wreck in Lexington?
Usually. Kentucky law lets you, together with police, call the company you want and name where the car goes. If that spot isn't the tow company's own lot, you have to set up payment when you call.
Police can still step in. They can call another truck if yours can't get there in a timely way, or if your car is a hazard or blocks traffic. If anyone is hurt, call 911 first. The tow can wait.
What should I get in writing from a Kentucky tow company?
Kentucky's towing law gives you a few things to ask for, no matter who you call.
- The rate sheet. On a roadside tow, the company must show you its full list of rates at the scene or when you ask. Companies also file rates with KYTC, and the state's DRIVE site has them.
- An itemized bill. You get it within 1 business day of the tow. Storage shows as a daily rate. Any extra fee gets its own line, with the exact amount.
- No forced extras. A company can't make you approve more than 24 hours of storage, or any repair work, just to get towed. It can't take your car to a repair shop unless you said yes before the car left.
- A refund path. A charge above the rate sheet counts as excessive. Once the State Police notify the company, it has 30 days to pay it back.
If your car ends up in storage, the lot must take cash, a credit or debit card, a money order or a bank check. It also can't charge storage for a day it won't let you see or take the car during posted hours.
How does Sentinel set your price?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. You tell us where you are, what you drive, what's wrong and where the car should go. We text you a price before anyone is sent, and that price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide. Then we stay with you by text until help arrives. That's the Stay-With-You Promise. Sentinel isn't an emergency service, so call 911 first if anyone is hurt.

Lexington Tow Price Questions
Does it cost more to get towed outside New Circle Road?
Usually the trip is longer, and distance is a big part of most tow prices. UK's own motorist help program adds a per-mile charge outside New Circle. Pick the closest shop you trust to keep the trip short.
Should I get towed to my shop back home in Georgetown or Nicholasville?
You can, but it's a longer trip than a shop near the breakdown. Check that your shop is open first. If it isn't, ask about a tow home now and to the shop later.
My battery died on the UK campus. Who do I call?
UK lists free on-campus jump starts for permit holders, campus patients and visitors. Call UK Transportation Services at 859-257-5757 on weekdays. Off campus, or if the jump doesn't work, call a roadside service.
Can a Lexington tow company charge me more than its posted rates?
No. Kentucky law treats any charge above the company's rate sheet as excessive. Ask for the rate sheet at the scene, and keep your itemized bill.
