Greenville, NC Tow Prices: What Actually Changes the Cost

In Greenville, NC, a tow price mostly follows the trip. How far is your car from the shop? Does the truck have to cross the Tar River or drive out to Ayden or Bethel? Is there road work in the way, like the new job at 5th Street and Memorial Drive? Your vehicle and what broke matter too. You get the price by text before a truck is sent, and you choose.

Why is there no flat price for a Greenville tow?

Because no two calls are the same job. A car that clicks in a lot on Arlington Boulevard may only need a jump. A car with a bad wheel on the Bypass needs a flatbed and a careful load. A tow from Grimesland to a shop on the west side is a long haul.

Any honest price has to start with the facts of your call. So we ask questions first. Where is the car? What is it doing? Where should it go? Then you get one price by text for that job.

You will not find a number in this post, and that is on purpose. A number on a web page can't know where your car is sitting.

Does road work in Greenville change the job?

It can. A work zone changes where a truck can stop, turn and load. Right now there are two NCDOT jobs worth knowing about in town.

5th Street and Memorial Drive

An NCDOT contractor started lane closures at this intersection on September 28, 2026. Crews are moving utilities, putting in drainage and adding a second left-turn lane from eastbound 5th Street onto Memorial Drive. Most work is in the day, with some nights. NCDOT expects it done in summer 2027, if the weather allows.

The lanes nearby already have a quirk. In the fall of 2024, NCDOT put in concrete islands on South Memorial Drive between O'Hagan Place and 5th Street to block left turns and crossing. It did that after several crashes. Drivers U-turn at the lights at 5th Street or Stantonsburg Road instead.

So if your car stops on South Memorial, your driver may not be able to just swing across. They may have to go up to a light and come back. Tell the dispatcher which side of the road you're on and which way you were heading.

Allen Road

NCDOT is widening about 2.3 miles of Allen Road, from Stantonsburg Road to Dickinson Avenue Extension, which is US 13. It goes from three lanes to four, with a median. The crossings at both ends are being rebuilt too. Clearing started in January 2026, and NCDOT says to expect lane closures some days.

A median changes a tow. Once it's in, a truck can't always pull straight across to your side. If you break down on Allen Road, give the nearest cross street and your direction. Check DriveNC for closures before you head out.

Does crossing the Tar River add to a tow?

Often, yes, because it adds miles. The Tar River runs through the Greenville area, and the US 264 and NC 11 Bypass is one way over it. North of the river, the Bypass ends at US 13, NC 11 and NC 903. East of town, US 264 turns into the Pactolus Highway and runs toward Washington.

Say your car quits on the Pactolus Highway, and your mechanic is near the Medical District. That tow has to come back across the river and through town. A shop closer to where you broke down is a shorter trip. You can always move the car to your regular shop later, once you know what's wrong.

What if I break down out in Pitt County?

Distance is the biggest piece. A tow from Winterville into Greenville is a different trip than one from Fountain or Bethel. The partner who takes your job also has to drive out to you first.

The Southwest Bypass is one road to know. NCDOT built it as a four-lane, divided road you can only get on or off at interchanges. It starts south of Ayden on NC 11, loops around the west side of Ayden and Winterville, and joins the US 264 Bypass west of Greenville. On a road like that, the last interchange you passed is the most useful thing you can say. It tells your driver which ramp to use.

The same goes for I-587, which brings traffic in from I-95 near Wilson. It ends at exit 73, the cloverleaf at Stantonsburg Road. If you stop near there, say which ramp or which side of the cloverleaf you're on.

Does it cost more to leave the car and come back later?

It can cost you more in a different way. Under North Carolina law, G.S. 20-161(e), an officer can remove a car left on the highway right-of-way for 24 hours or more. Then you're dealing with a police tow and getting your car out of a lot. Sentinel doesn't do impounds or police tows.

If the car can't move and the spot is safe, call for a tow while you're still there. If you had a small crash, no one is hurt and both cars still drive, state law, G.S. 20-166(c2), says to move off the travel lanes to the shoulder.

What if police are already there?

Greenville's city code, Sec. 11-7-3, lets a driver who is there and able pick a tow service that's within a reasonable distance. The officers on scene decide what's reasonable. If you can't choose, police use their rotation list. In an emergency, they may call the nearest truck. Follow what the officer decides.

The city regulates the tow companies on its police list. If you think a tow company or driver acted wrongly, the city asks you to call 252-329-4455.

What else goes into my price?

  • Your vehicle. A small sedan is quick to load. An all-wheel-drive SUV or a light pickup may need a flatbed.
  • What went wrong. A dead battery after a hot day may only need a jump start. Greenville averages about 46 days a year at 90°F or hotter, and heat is hard on old batteries.
  • Where it's stuck. A car on a soft shoulder or in a ditch may need a pull back to solid ground first.
  • Where it's going. Home, a shop or a dealer. Have the address ready when you call.

If the car truly can't roll, you need a car tow. Our partners tow cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups. We don't handle RVs, motorcycles, heavy trucks or long tows between cities.

Can tow prices go up after a hurricane?

North Carolina has a price gouging law. The state Department of Justice says it applies once the Governor, the Legislature or a city or town declares a state of emergency. Hurricanes and floods are on its list of triggers.

When we checked on October 3, 2026, the department said no state of emergency was in effect. Questions? Call 1-877-5-NO-SCAM, toll-free inside North Carolina.

After a big storm, roads near the river can be closed for a while. A tow has to wait for an open road both ways. Never drive into water on the road. Our Greenville flood guide covers what to do with your car.

How does Sentinel lock a Greenville price?

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the work. You tell us where the car is, what it's doing and where it should go. We text your price before anyone is sent. That number is your ceiling for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first, and it's your call.

Then we check on you by text until your truck gets there. You can track your truck on a map. For the main roads and towns we cover, see our Greenville towing page.

If anyone is hurt or your car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.

Greenville Tow Price Questions

Why won't you give me a price on the website?

Because the job sets the price. Where the car is, where it's going and what broke all change it. Call or request help online, and you get one price by text before a truck is sent.

Does the road work on Memorial Drive affect my tow?

It can change the route. There are lane closures at 5th Street and Memorial Drive into summer 2027, and no left turns on part of South Memorial. Tell us which side of the road you're on and your direction.

Is a tow from Ayden or Bethel priced the same as one in town?

Usually not. Distance is a big part of any tow. A shorter trip to a nearby shop keeps the job smaller. You see the price before you agree to anything.

Can the price go up once the driver arrives?

Not without you saying yes. The texted price is the most you pay for that job. If the job turns out different, we text a new price first.
