What Side of the Rock River Changes a Tow Price in Rockford

In Rockford, a tow to a shop on the other side of the Rock River covers more road than the map makes it look. The truck can't go straight. It has to haul your car to a bridge, cross, then double back. More miles can mean a higher price. So pick a shop on your own bank when you can. Then say both addresses on the call. Your price is locked by text before anyone is sent.

Why does the river add miles to a Rockford tow?

A tow price is built from a few things: how far the car goes, what you drive, what went wrong and where it's stuck. The river only touches one of them, the distance. But it can touch it a lot.

The Rock River runs through the middle of Rockford. Cars only get across on bridges. That means a tow is never a straight line from your car to the shop. It's your car to a crossing, over the water, then down the far bank to the shop's door.

Say your car quits in a store lot off East State Street. Your mechanic is near downtown, off Main Street, on the west bank. Both spots are in Rockford, and they may look a short hop apart. The loaded truck still has to reach a bridge first. If the nearest crossing is closed or out of the way, the trip grows again.

Now say there's a good shop a few blocks away on the east bank. Same car, same problem, fewer miles. That's the whole idea. You can't move the breakdown, but you can often choose the end of the trip.

Which bridges cross the Rock River in and near Rockford?

This isn't every crossing. These are the ones that shape a lot of trips:

  • Jefferson Street Bridge, downtown. Westbound Business US 20 uses Jefferson Street to cross.
  • The eastbound downtown route. Eastbound Business US 20 runs on Chestnut and Walnut Streets and 1st Avenue, then turns into East State Street past the river.
  • Whitman Street Bridge, north of downtown. It meets IL 251 on the east bank.
  • Morgan Street Bridge, on the south side. The city calls it an entrance to South Rockford, with better access to the South Main area from the east.
  • IL 2 bridges in Rockton. IDOT says this pair carries 8,550 vehicles a day between Rockford, Rockton, South Beloit and Beloit, Wisconsin.
  • Roscoe Road and Prairie Hill Road bridges, north of the city. Both are county bridges, and both are closed this fall. More on that next.

The downtown pair is one way each. So a truck heading west crosses on one street, and a truck heading east crosses on another. A dispatcher plans around that. You don't have to.

Which Rock River bridges are closed in fall 2026?

Two Winnebago County bridges over the Rock River are shut for work right now. Both sit north of Rockford, near Roscoe, Rockton and South Beloit.

Roscoe Road bridge

The county closed it starting the week of July 6 for repairs. The plan is to have it open to traffic by the end of November 2026. Crews are working on steel beams, bearings, joints, the deck and the rails. The county also put temporary signals at the Roscoe Road and Old River Road corner while the bridge is closed. Some finishing work may wait until the spring of 2027.

Prairie Hill Road bridge

Prairie Hill Road is closed between IL 2 (Blackhawk Boulevard) and South Bluff Road while the county replaces the bridge. Work was set to start February 2, 2026. The county expects it done by the end of November 2026. Local traffic can still reach homes and businesses on each side.

The county says both timelines depend on the weather. So check before you count on either bridge. The Getting Around Illinois map from IDOT shows closures. The county highway department lists 815-319-4000 for questions.

What do the closures mean if you break down up north?

If your car dies in Roscoe and your shop is across the river toward Rockton, the short way over is gone for now. Your driver has to take a detour to another crossing. That adds road miles, and miles feed the price.

It works the same on the Prairie Hill Road side near South Beloit. A shop that's "right across the river" may not be close by road until the new bridge opens.

You don't need to plan the detour. Just tell the dispatcher the town where the car is and the town where the shop is. The price you get by text is built on the route the truck can actually drive. If a shop on your side of the river can do the work, ask about that too.

How can you keep a cross-river tow shorter?

A few choices before you call can trim the trip:

  • Look for a shop on your bank. If your regular mechanic is across town, ask yourself if this repair needs them.
  • Think about home. If it's late and the shop is closed, a tow home on your own side may make more sense. You can book the shop trip later.
  • Rule out a quick fix. If the engine clicks and won't turn over, a jump start may get you rolling with no tow at all.
  • Decide before you call. Know where the car is going before the price is locked. That keeps the price you agreed to.
  • Check the bridges. If you're north of the city this fall, a closed bridge may make a far shop even farther.

When is a tow across the river worth it?

Shorter isn't always better. Sometimes the far shop is the right call:

  • Your mechanic already knows the car and has its history.
  • The repair needs a dealer, like warranty work.
  • The nearby shops can't take your car this week.

In those cases, take the longer car tow and skip a second tow later. The point is to choose on purpose, with the price in front of you, not to find out after.

What should you tell the dispatcher?

Give these on the call, in this order:

  1. Where the car is. Street, nearest cross street, and which bank of the river.
  2. Where it's going. The shop name and street, and which bank it's on.
  3. Your town, if you're outside Rockford. Roscoe, Rockton and South Beloit matter this fall.
  4. What you drive, and what went wrong.
  5. How the car sits. In a lot, on a shoulder, or in a ditch.

If anyone is hurt, or your car is stopped in a live lane or on a bridge, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.

Can you change the shop after you get a price?

Yes. A new drop off point is a change to the job. If that happens, we text you a new price first, and you decide. Nothing changes without your OK. It's simplest to settle the shop before the truck is sent, though. That way the price you lock is the price you pay.

How does Sentinel set a Rockford tow price?

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. We text you a locked price before anyone is sent. That price is the most you pay for the job. Then we check on you by text until your driver arrives, and you can track your truck on a map. That's our Stay-With-You Promise. For winter driving and the towns around the city, see our Rockford towing page. For tollway rules and the other things that set a price, read our Rockford tow cost guide.

Rockford River Tow Price Questions

Does a tow cost more if my shop is across the Rock River?

It can. Distance is part of every tow price, and a cross-river trip has to go by way of a bridge. You get a locked price by text before anyone is sent, so you see it first.

Is the Roscoe Road bridge open?

Winnebago County closed it starting the week of July 6, 2026. The plan is to reopen it to traffic by the end of November 2026, weather allowing. Check the county or the IDOT map before you rely on it.

What part of Prairie Hill Road is closed?

The stretch between IL 2 (Blackhawk Boulevard) and South Bluff Road, near Rockton and South Beloit. The county is replacing the bridge over the Rock River. It expects the work done by the end of November 2026.

Can I switch to a closer shop after I get my price?

Yes. Tell us the new shop. If the job changes, we text a new price first, and you decide. Settling the shop before dispatch keeps things simple.

Rules change, so check the official source before you rely on it. Sources: Winnebago County: Roscoe Road Bridge Closure, Winnebago County: Prairie Hill Road Bridge Closure, IDOT: Illinois 2 Rock River bridge in Rockton, City of Rockford: South Rockford Target Plan, IDOT Getting Around Illinois.
