No Membership, No Problem on Either Side of the Rock River in Rockford

You don't need a membership to get roadside assistance in Rockford. You call once, get a price by text, and pay for that one job. The most useful thing you can say on that call is which side of the Rock River you're on. Say "east side" or "west side," the street and the nearest cross street. That tells a vetted local partner which way to head before anything else.
Why does the river matter so much in Rockford?
The Rock River runs right through the middle of Rockford. The city grew from two settlements, one on each bank. It still works that way. To get from one half to the other, you need a bridge.
So a driver on the wrong bank can see your street across the river and still not reach it fast. They have to find a bridge, cross, and come back down the other side. Naming your side up front saves that loop.
The river isn't the only water. Kent Creek feeds in from the west side. Keith Creek and Spring Creek come in from the east and northeast. At the south end, near the airport, the Kishwaukee River joins the Rock. Each one can put a short stretch of water between you and a driver.
How do you tell which side you're on?
If you live here, you just know. If you're visiting, or it's dark and you took a few turns, use the street signs. Several big Rockford streets tell you the side in their names or route numbers.
- State Street: it's West State Street on the west side and East State Street on the east side. The word on the sign gives you the answer.
- Main Street: this is IL 2. Downtown is built around Main and West State, on the west bank.
- Kilburn Avenue: this is IL 70, the main route out to the northwest.
- IL 251: it runs along the east bank. In town it uses 11th Street, Harrison Avenue, Kishwaukee Street, and Second and Third Streets downtown.
- I-39 and I-90: they run north and south together through eastern Winnebago County.
Still not sure? Open the map app on your phone and look for the blue line of the river. Then say which bank your dot is on.
What if you break down on a Rock River bridge?
Downtown, Business US 20 splits in two. Westbound cars use Jefferson Street and cross on the Jefferson Street Bridge. Eastbound cars use Chestnut and Walnut Streets and 1st Avenue. North of downtown, IL 251 meets the Whitman Street Bridge.
Illinois law bans stopping on a bridge. But that rule doesn't apply when your car is so disabled you can't avoid it. If the car still rolls, keep going slowly and get off the span into a lot or side street. If it won't move:
- Turn your hazard lights on.
- Stay in the car with your seat belt on.
- If you're in a live lane or anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
- Then call for help. Name the bridge and the way you were headed, "westbound on Jefferson" or "eastbound toward East State."
Your partner's truck will run amber lights while it works. Illinois's Scott's Law tells passing drivers to move over or slow down for those lights. Stay in your seat until your driver says it's safe to get out.
What should you say on the call?
Have these ready before you dial. A short, clear call gets help moving sooner than a long one.
- Your side of the river. East or west.
- Your street and the nearest cross street. Or a store sign or business name you can see.
- Which way you face, if you're on a through road like State Street or Harrison.
- What happened. Clicks and no start, a flat, keys inside, out of gas, or slid off the road.
- Your car. Color, make and model.
Near the river path? The Rock River Recreation Path runs north from Davis Park toward the Machesney Park Mall area. If you parked to walk or bike it, say which park lot you're in.
Which roadside help do you actually need?
Most Rockford calls are not tows. They're cars that need a small fix to get rolling again. Pick the closest match and say it when you call.
The car clicks but won't start
That's usually a dead battery. Rockford winters are hard on them. NOAA's normals for the Rockford airport show about 136 nights a year at or below freezing. About 11 of those dip to zero or colder. The January normal low is close to 15 degrees. A jump start often gets you going. Then drive straight to a shop and have the battery tested.
You have a flat
If you have a good spare and the rim isn't bent, a flat tire change puts the spare on for you. Your driver does not repair or sell tires. With no spare, or two flats, you need a tow to a tire shop.
Your keys are locked inside
Don't pry the door or the window. A car lockout visit gets you back in without the damage. If a child or pet is inside on a hot or cold day, call 911 first.
It's more than a quick fix
A car that overheats, grinds, leaks or was in a crash needs a car tow. Tell the dispatcher where you want it to go, your home or your shop. If the shop is across the river, say so.
Do you need a roadside membership in Rockford?
No. A membership plan is something you pay for before trouble starts. With Sentinel, you pay for one job, only when you need it. There's no yearly fee and no card to find in the glove box.
Here's how the price works. You tell us the job, the car and where it is. We text you a price before we send anyone. That price is the most you pay for that job. If the job changes once your driver sees the car, we text a new price first, and you decide.
After your first job, your car goes on file in the free Sentinel Circle. Next time, you can just text "TOW."
How does Sentinel Towing work in Rockford?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. We don't own trucks. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. We lock your price by text first. Then we stay with you by text until help arrives. You get your driver's name, photo and truck, and you can track your truck on a map. That's our Stay-With-You Promise. We're not an emergency service, so 911 comes first if anyone is in danger. For winter, Scott's Law and the towns around the city, see our Rockford towing page.
When should you call the police instead?
Call 911 if anyone is hurt, if your car blocks a live lane, or if you feel unsafe where you are. For a police matter that isn't an emergency, the Rockford Police Department lists a non-emergency line: 815-966-2900. You can still call us for the car once the scene is safe.
Before you head across town after a storm, check IDOT's Getting Around Illinois map for closed roads. A detour can change which bridge your driver uses.

Rockford Roadside Questions
Can I get roadside help in Rockford without a membership?
Yes. You call, get a price by text for that one job, and pay only for it. There's no yearly plan to join.
How do I know if I'm on the east or west side of Rockford?
Check the street signs. State Street is "West State" on one side of the river and "East State" on the other. Downtown, Main Street is on the west bank. IL 251 roads like 11th Street and Second Street follow the east bank.
My car died on the Jefferson Street Bridge. What do I do?
Hazards on and stay buckled in. If you're blocking traffic or anyone is hurt, call 911 first. Then call for help and say you're westbound on the Jefferson Street Bridge.
Can you tow me from Loves Park to a shop on the west side?
Tell us where the car is and where you want it to go. If the partner can make the trip, your texted price covers it. Nothing extra happens without your OK.
