Why a Tow Costs More Along War Memorial Drive in Peoria

On War Memorial Drive in Peoria, the miles to your shop set most of the tow price. The road is US 150. It runs across the whole north side, from Illinois 91 near Grand Prairie to the McClugage Bridge. Break down at the west end with a shop in East Peoria, and your car rides the full length and crosses the river. Pick a shop near where you stopped, and the run gets short.

Why does the end of War Memorial you're on matter so much?

War Memorial Drive is long. It starts out west where Illinois 91 meets it, near The Shoppes at Grand Prairie and the road to Dunlap. It ends at the river, where US 150 goes over the McClugage Bridge. On the far side, the same highway keeps going to East Peoria and on toward Morton.

So "I broke down on War Memorial" can mean two very different trips. Here's an example. Your car quits at the light by Illinois 91 after a stop at the shops. Your mechanic is in East Peoria. That tow runs the whole corridor, then crosses the river. Now say the same car quits near Adams Street, a few blocks from the bridge. Same shop, far fewer miles.

The fix is simple. Before you call, think about where the car should go. A good shop on your end of War Memorial can cut most of the distance.

Where on War Memorial are you?

US 150 crosses five state routes between Grand Prairie and the river. Name the one you're nearest. It tells your driver which end to come from.

Nearest crossingWhat it connects toPart of the corridor
Illinois 91Grand Prairie shops and DunlapFar west end
Illinois 6Freeway to I-74, I-474 and ChillicotheWest side
I-74Downtown and the Murray Baker BridgeMiddle
Illinois 40, Knoxville AvenueSouth toward downtownMiddle to east
Illinois 29, Adams StreetGalena Road north, downtown southEast end, at the bridge

Add your direction, east or west. Then give a cross street or a store sign you can see. On a long, busy road, "eastbound, past Knoxville" is far more useful than "on War Memorial."

Does the McClugage Bridge work change your tow?

It changes the drive, and it can change where your car ends up. IDOT closed the westbound McClugage Bridge on July 1, 2026. Both directions now share the newer eastbound span. There are two lanes each way, with crossovers to get traffic on and off.

As US 150 and US 24 traffic nears the bridge, it drops to one lane so the ramps can merge. All ramps stay open. The work covers the westbound bridge and the bridge over Adams Street. IDOT says the whole project should be done in late 2028.

What that means for your price:

  • Shop across the river? Your tow runs through the work zone and over the bridge. That's more road than a shop on the Peoria side.
  • Shop on the Peoria side? If you broke down on the north side, the truck may never need to cross.
  • Coming home from East Peoria or Morton? If the car dies before the bridge, think about a shop on that side instead.

IDOT asks drivers to expect delays and use other routes when they can. Check Getting Around Illinois before you head out.

What if the car dies on the bridge?

Illinois law bans stopping on a bridge. But that rule doesn't apply when your car is disabled and you can't avoid it. If the car still rolls, coast off the span first. If it won't, turn on your hazards and stay buckled in. With traffic squeezed onto one span, you may be stopped in a live lane. Call 911 first, then call for the tow.

What happens at Knoxville Avenue?

IDOT calls the War Memorial and Knoxville Avenue crossing one of the busiest intersections in the Peoria area. It also says it has a history as a high crash location. IDOT is studying a rebuild of Knoxville Avenue, including this intersection. That study is still in its first phase.

A fender bender here is a common way a car ends up needing a tow. If anyone is hurt, call 911. If your car is wrecked and blocking traffic, the police can have it removed right away under Illinois law. That's a tow the police order, not one you set up. You don't pick the company, and you don't lock that price ahead of time.

If the car can roll and no one is hurt, move it out of the lanes if police tell you to. Then you can call for your own tow, from a safe spot, and choose where it goes.

What if you leave the car and come back later?

This one surprises people. Walking away from a dead car can cost more than calling right then. Illinois law sets clocks for this:

  • On an interstate or expressway: police may have a car towed once it's been left there for 2 hours or more.
  • On a highway in an urban district: police may tow an abandoned car after 10 hours or more.
  • Blocking traffic: a wrecked or unattended car causing a hazard can be removed right away.

So if your car quits on I-74 near the War Memorial exit, don't leave it overnight. A police-ordered tow goes where the police send it. Then you have to track it down and get it back. Sentinel doesn't do impounds or police tows, and we can't get a towed car released. Calling for your own tow early keeps the choice yours.

What went wrong with the car?

Your price also depends on the job. Sometimes the right fix is no tow at all. Tell the dispatcher what the car is doing, not just that it stopped.

  • Clicks or cranks slowly in a store lot: a jump start may get you home on your own. Our Peoria jump start guide covers the cold-morning version.
  • Flat with a good spare: your driver can put the spare on where you are.
  • Ran out of gas on Illinois 6: ask for fuel delivery instead of a tow.
  • Overheating, smoke, a leak or a grinding noise: stop driving. A car tow is the safer choice.

The vehicle counts too. A small sedan, an all-wheel-drive SUV and a light pickup each load a bit differently. Give the make and model when you call. Say if a wheel won't turn or the car sits very low.

How do you keep a War Memorial tow price down?

  1. Choose the shop first. Pick one on your side of the river, and near your end of War Memorial.
  2. Give a clear spot. Direction, nearest state route crossing, and a sign or lot name.
  3. Say how the car sits. In a lot, on the curb lane, in a turn lane, or on a ramp. Each is a different setup.
  4. Call early. Don't leave the car on I-74 or a busy lane and hope to deal with it later.

When a tow truck stops with amber lights, Illinois's Scott's Law tells passing drivers to slow down and move over when they safely can. Still, stay in your car, away from traffic, until your driver arrives.

How does Sentinel set your price?

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. You tell us where you are, the car, what went wrong and where it should go. We text you a price before we dispatch, and that price is locked. If the job changes, we text a new price first, and you decide. While you wait, we stay with you by text. Read the Stay-With-You Promise, or see the Peoria towing page for the river bridges and winter weather.

If anyone is hurt, or you're stuck in a live lane on the bridge or War Memorial, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service.

War Memorial Drive Tow Price Questions

Why does a tow from Grand Prairie to East Peoria cost more?

Mostly distance. The car rides the full length of War Memorial Drive, then crosses the McClugage Bridge. A shop on the Peoria side, near where you stopped, keeps the miles down.

Is the McClugage Bridge still down to one span?

Yes. IDOT closed the westbound span on July 1, 2026, and both directions use the newer eastbound span. IDOT expects the project to wrap up in late 2028. Check Getting Around Illinois for the latest.

Can I leave my car on I-74 and call a tow in the morning?

It's risky. Illinois lets police have a car towed once it's been left on an interstate for 2 hours or more. Then you have to find it and get it back. Calling right away keeps the choice of shop yours.

I got rear-ended at Knoxville and War Memorial. Who tows my car?

If the car is blocking traffic, police may order it removed. If it can be moved safely and police are fine with it, you can call your own tow and pick the shop. Call 911 first if anyone is hurt.
