Towing in Sherbrooke: A-10, A-55 and the Two Bypasses

Sherbrooke sits where the Magog River meets the Saint-François, in the Eastern Townships. Two autoroutes lead in, and two bypasses carry traffic around the city center. Knowing which one you're on is the fastest way to get help to you.

A-10 from Montreal

The Autoroute des Cantons-de-l'Est runs from Montreal to Sherbrooke. Between Bromont and Magog, it climbs through mountain country near the Mont Orford and Mont Brome ski hills. Near the north end of Lake Memphremagog, A-10 joins A-55, and the two run together toward the city. A-10 ends at the A-610 junction.

A-55, north and south

A-55 carries on north to Drummondville, Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan. To the south, it becomes Interstate 91 at the Vermont border near Stanstead.

A-610 and A-410

A-610 is the northern bypass. It links A-10 and A-55 with Route 112 toward East Angus, Thetford Mines and Lac-Mégantic. Its eastern part is a two-lane freeway, so there's little room if you stop. A-410 is the southern bypass. It runs past Boulevard Bourque and Boulevard de l'Université, then around Lennoxville on a newer section with a bridge over the Massawippi River. Stalled on either one? Hazards on, stay belted in, and call for a tow.

Driving up from Vermont?

You can speak with us in English. Quebec's winter tire rule, December 1 to March 15, applies to cars registered in Quebec, not to cars registered outside the province. Once a partner is on the way, you get the driver's name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

Eastern Townships winter

Long, Snowy Winters and the Overnight Parking Ban

Sherbrooke winters are long, cold and snowy, and snow sometimes falls as early as October or as late as May. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for the Bromptonville station, in Sherbrooke's Brompton area, show about 207 cm of snow a year. Lows drop below minus 20 C on about 27 days, and snow sits 20 cm deep or more on about 38.

The overnight parking ban

From November 15 to March 31, overnight street parking is banned in Sherbrooke from midnight to 7 a.m. The city lifts the ban on some nights. Check the city site from 4 p.m. to see if tonight is one of them. If you can't confirm it, the city's advice is simple: don't park on the street overnight. During the ban, the downtown garages at Place de la Cité and Wellington Sud offer free overnight parking on the city's posted schedule.

Car gone in the morning? The city's winter parking page lists the number to call to get a towed car back. That's a city tow, not a roadside call. Details are on the Ville de Sherbrooke winter parking page.

Cold weather and your car

  • A battery that just clicks on a frozen morning is a jump start.
  • The province notes electric cars lose range in the cold. An EV that ran out of charge needs a tow to a charger, not a jump.
  • Slid into a snowbank on a side street? If the car isn't damaged, a winch-out may be enough.

On Quebec Autoroutes, Stay With the Car

Quebec's Highway Safety Code bars stopping on an autoroute or its ramps, and on a bridge, except in a case of necessity. It also bars walking along an autoroute, except in necessity. A breakdown counts. So pull as far over as you can and wait inside.

Other drivers have a duty too. Under the Move-Over Law, anyone approaching a stopped tow truck with its lights on must slow down and move over, once it's safe, to leave as much space as they can. Before a trip on A-10 or A-55, check Québec 511 for closures and conditions.

Sherbrooke Towing Questions

My car died on A-10 near Magog. Should I walk to the next exit?

No. Quebec only allows walking along an autoroute in a case of necessity, and it isn't safe. Stay in the car with your belt on and hazards flashing, and call us. If you're in a live lane, call 911 first.

I'm a student at Bishop's and locked my keys in my car. Can you help?

Yes. That's a car lockout. Tell us which lot you're in, and you'll get the price by text before anyone heads out.

Will the tow cost more than the price you text me?

No. If the final bill is higher, you pay the texted price. That's one of the terms of the Stay-With-You Promise.

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Sherbrooke

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Sherbrooke drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Sherbrooke Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
