Towing in Saguenay: the Dubuc Bridge, Autoroute 70 and Route 172

Saguenay is three boroughs strung along the Saguenay River: Jonquière, Chicoutimi and La Baie. Roads run along both banks, and one bridge carries cars across at Chicoutimi. When you call, tell us your borough and which side of the river you're on.

Pont Dubuc

The Dubuc Bridge links Chicoutimi and Chicoutimi-Nord. It's four lanes split by a concrete barrier, and it carries a lot of traffic every day. The Sainte-Anne bridge beside it is only open to cyclists and walkers. If you stall on the Dubuc, stay inside with your hazards on. Quebec's Highway Safety Code only allows stopping on a bridge in a case of necessity, so get help moving right away.

Autoroute 70 and Route 170

Autoroute 70 bypasses Jonquière, Chicoutimi and part of La Baie on the south side of the river. Route 170 runs alongside it the whole way, and it's the fallback when the autoroute is closed. East of La Baie, Route 170 heads through the mountains to Saint-Siméon.

Route 172 on the north shore

On the north side, Route 172 runs from Saint-Nazaire through Saguenay and on to Saint-Fulgence, Sainte-Rose-du-Nord and Tadoussac. A dead engine out there needs a tow, so give us the nearest village.

Help in English

You can speak with us in English. Tell us where you are and what the car is doing. We lock your price by text, send a vetted local partner and text you the driver's name, photo and truck. You can track your truck on a map while you wait.

The drive from Quebec City

Route 175 Through the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve

Saguenay is about 200 km north of Quebec City by road, and Route 175 connects the two. It was rebuilt as a four-lane divided highway, finished in 2013, but the land hasn't changed. It crosses a mountain plateau with big temperature swings. In winter, ice, snow and blowing snow make it a hard drive, and wind and cold make clearing it hard too. It closes a few times a year for weather or crashes.

  • Moose. Before the rebuild, the road averaged about 45 moose collisions a year, and 90 percent happened between dusk and dawn. Slow down at night.
  • L'Étape. Halfway between the two cities, L'Étape has gas, food and a place to stop. Top up there. Out of fuel anyway? Ask for fuel delivery.
  • Closures. Never drive on a closed road. The province says to take shelter until conditions let you go on. Check Québec 511 before you leave.

When It Snows in Saguenay

  • Storm closures. A few times each winter, the city closes open rural roads where the wind whips up gusts. During those closures, only essential travel is allowed, in convoys behind the plow.
  • Plowing order. Main arteries and hills come first, then collectors and rural roads, then residential streets.
  • Overnight parking. A city bylaw bans parking on streets and public lots from midnight to 7 a.m., November 15 to April 1, to make room for snow removal.
  • Snow emergencies. In a big storm, the city can declare a snow emergency and tow cars parked on the street at the owner's cost.
  • Winter tires. Quebec-registered cars need them from December 1 to March 15.

On the road, Quebec's Move-Over Law says drivers must slow down and give room to a tow truck stopped with its lights on. Buried in a snowbank on a side street? A winch-out may free you without a tow.

Saguenay Towing Questions

I hit a moose on Route 175. What do I do?

If anyone is hurt, or the car is in a lane, call 911 first. Then call us. If the car can't be driven, we'll send a tow and text you the price first. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of the car for your records.

My car won't start at the Bagotville airport. Can you help?

Yes. Tell us which lot. If it clicks or the dash lights are weak, a jump start may be all it needs.

Can someone at home follow along?

Yes. Give us one number, and we text that person where you are and when the truck should arrive. It's part of the Stay-With-You Promise.

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Saguenay

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Saguenay drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Saguenay Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
