Towing in Quebec City, From the Bridges to the Autoroutes

Two road bridges cross the St. Lawrence between Quebec City and Lévis on the south shore. Both are places you do not want to stall.

The Pierre Laporte Bridge

This six-lane bridge carries Autoroute 73 from Autoroute 20 on the south shore into the city. Its main span is the longest of any suspension bridge in Canada, and it's built to carry up to 90,000 vehicles a day. If your car dies on it, hazards on and stay inside. Call right away.

The Quebec Bridge

Just downstream, the older Quebec Bridge carries Route 175 on three lanes, along with a rail line. It still has the longest cantilever span in the world. Route 175 then becomes boulevard Laurier through Sainte-Foy.

Tell us which bridge and which direction. A tow gets you off and to a garage on either shore.

Winter in the capital

Old Quebec, Deep Snow and the Night Plows

Quebec City winters are cold, windy and snowy. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for Jean Lesage airport show about 303 cm of snow a year, with 5 cm or more falling on about 21 days. There's snow 20 cm deep or more on about 110 days, and freezing rain or drizzle on about 13.

Steep streets in the old city

Old Quebec sits on and below Cap Diamant, split into an upper and a lower town. Côte de la Montagne winds up the cliff between them. On ice, a slide on a street like that can leave you stuck against a curb. Don't spin the wheels. If the car isn't damaged, a winch-out may be all you need.

Snow removal nights

From November 1 to April 15, street parking is banned wherever a snow removal operation is under way, and orange flashing lights mark the streets. In most boroughs the ban runs overnight, from 9 or 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. On some La Cité-Limoilou streets, like Grande Allée and rue Saint-Jean, it's midnight to 7 a.m. The city says to check your borough's hours to avoid a tow. If your car was towed for snow removal, look it up by plate number with the city's Info-Remorquage service or call 311. That's a city tow, not a roadside call.

See the Ville de Québec snow removal page for current operations.

Quebec Road Rules Worth Knowing

The Move-Over Law

When a tow truck, emergency vehicle or surveillance vehicle is stopped with its lights on, you must slow down and move over to leave as much space as you safely can. It applies on highways, country roads and city streets. Read it on the SAAQ site.

Stopping on an autoroute

The Highway Safety Code bars stopping on an autoroute, its ramps, a bridge or in a tunnel, except in a case of necessity. Walking along an autoroute is also barred, except in necessity. So if you break down, stay with the car.

Winter tires

Cars registered in Quebec must have winter tires from December 1 to March 15. Vehicles registered outside Quebec are exempt, but you'll want them anyway.

Road conditions

The province points drivers to Québec 511 for real-time winter conditions, crashes, roadwork and closures.

Quebec City Towing Questions

I'm visiting from outside Quebec. Can I call you in English?

Yes. Call and speak with us in English. We lock your price by text, send a vetted local partner and check on you by text until the truck arrives.

My car is gone from the street after a snowstorm. Was it towed?

Possibly, if a snow removal operation was on. Look up your plate with the city's Info-Remorquage service or call 311. If it won't start once you get it back, call us for a jump start.

Can you tow me from Lévis to a garage in Sainte-Foy?

Yes. Tell us the garage. The price you get by text before we dispatch is the most you pay. That's part of the Stay-With-You Promise.

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Quebec City

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Quebec City drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Quebec City Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
