Nebraska law

Nebraska's Rule Covers Any Stopped Vehicle

Nebraska's move-over law, Neb. Rev. Stat. 60-6,378, is written for controlled-access highways like I-80. A driver coming up on any stopped vehicle on the same side of the road must use due care. With at least two lanes going their way, they must move over at least one lane. If they can't, they must slow down to a safe speed. That protects your car and the partner's truck alike.

There's one catch. The rule doesn't apply when the stopped vehicle is empty and nobody is in it or near it. The law also has the state post signs telling drivers about the rule.

One Interstate, end to end

I-80 Does the Heavy Lifting

I-80 is the only Interstate that crosses Nebraska from one end to the other. It comes in from Wyoming and runs to Omaha, with more than 80 exits along the way. The state has no major north-south Interstate. Apart from a three-mile piece of I-76 near the Colorado line, I-80 is its only primary Interstate, with I-180 running into Lincoln and I-480 and I-680 serving Omaha.

Off I-80, the rest of the state moves on US and state highways. If your car quits out there, tell us the highway number, which way you were headed and the nearest town or mile marker. We look for a partner who can reach you for a jump start, a few gallons of fuel or a tow into the next town.

East and west are different places

The eastern two-thirds of Nebraska is humid, with hot summers and cold winters. The Panhandle and the west are semi-arid, and chinook winds off the Rockies can warm them for a spell in winter. Rain falls from about 31.5 inches a year in the southeast to about 13.8 in the Panhandle, while most of the state gets 25 to 35 inches of snow.

Nebraska is in Tornado Alley. Check Nebraska 511 before you drive into spring or winter weather.

Nebraska Questions

I'm stuck on I-80 in a snowstorm. Can someone get to me?

If a partner can reach you safely, yes. If the Interstate is closed where you are, we'll tell you what that means for your call and what we can still do.
