Lincoln Tow Prices: What the University Area Changes (and Why Air Park Is Different)

Near the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, your tow is usually a short trip. Shops and main roads sit close by. What can make the job bigger is the setting: a game day street closure, a tight campus garage, or a car that has to leave campus fast. Out in Air Park, on the far northwest side past the airport, the trip itself is longer. Your price follows the real job, and you see it by text before anyone is sent.
Why is a tow near campus often a short trip?
Main roads come right up to campus. The city's own game day routes show it. From I-80, Exit 401a puts you on I-180 south, which merges onto Ninth Street. Exit 397 puts you on US 77 south to the Rosa Parks Way exit. So a car that dies on a street near campus is rarely far from a main road.
Distance is the biggest piece of most tow prices. A short run to a shop near downtown is a simple job. The setup is quick. The driver isn't on the road for long.
But short doesn't always mean simple. Near campus, the hard part is often getting to the car, not hauling it.
What happens if my car dies on a Husker game day?
Game days change the streets around Memorial Stadium. For the 2025 season opener, the City of Lincoln posted these steps:
- Two hours before kickoff, southbound Ninth Street closed at the roundabout at Ninth Street and Salt Creek Roadway.
- R, Q and P streets closed to traffic coming from Ninth Street.
- After the game, 16th Street from Vine to Q closed to northbound traffic.
- After the game, northbound 10th Street from Q to T was held for I-180 traffic only.
- No drop-off or pickup in front of the stadium. Ride share pickup moved to the bus stop in front of Henzlik Hall, 1430 Vine Street.
The city can change these plans each season, so check before the game. The city points drivers to lincoln.ne.gov/closures for street work, and NDOT points them to Nebraska 511.
How does that change my tow?
Your partner tow company has to reach your car like everyone else. A closed street can mean a longer way around. A packed lot can mean a wait until cars clear out. That can make the job bigger than the same tow on a quiet Tuesday.
Here's what helps. If your car won't start in a lot after the game, stay put if it's safe. Let the crowd thin out. Then call. Tell us which lot or street you're on and which side of the stadium you're near. If the battery is just dead, a jump start may get you rolling with no tow at all.
What about the drive home on I-80?
The Nebraska Department of Transportation warned 2025 fans about heavy traffic after games. It said Exit 409, between Lincoln and Waverly, may close for safety as I-80 traffic builds. That can push more cars onto US Highway 6. NDOT also said leaving downtown right after the game can put you in heavy traffic. If your car quits in that crawl, tell us the direction, the last exit and the nearest mile marker.
Does a campus garage make a tow harder?
It can. A garage has ramps, tight turns and a roof over every level. A car on an upper deck is a different job than a car at the curb. Some vehicles can be jump started or get a spare where they sit. Others have to be moved down and out first.
So tell us three things when you call:
- The garage name and the level.
- What you drive: car, SUV, minivan or light pickup.
- What happened: won't start, flat, locked out, or won't move.
That lets the right kind of truck come. It also keeps the price matched to the real job.
Can I leave a car that won't run on campus?
Not for long. UNL's parking rules say a car that isn't running and is parked on campus can be towed or wheel locked. The university can give a temporary repair permit for up to one week. Call UNL Parking and Transit Services at 402-472-1800 to ask.
That matters for your wallet. If you leave a dead car and it gets towed by the school, that tow is not yours to plan. You pay the impound side and any parking fees too. Sentinel doesn't do impounds. But we can send a tow to your shop before it comes to that. Read about standard car towing to see how that works.
Winter adds one more catch. University Place is one of Lincoln's snow removal districts. When the city calls a parking ban there, cars on the street can be towed at the owner's cost. A dead car on a University Place street during a snow ban is a reason to call early.
Why is a tow from Air Park a longer trip?
Air Park sits in the far northwest corner of Lincoln. It started as base housing for the old Lincoln Air Force Base and later joined the city. Air Park West Open Field, a city park, is at NW 48th and Seward.
The Lincoln Airport is at 2400 W Adams Street. The Airport Authority says it sits about five miles northwest of downtown. I-80 and US Highway 34 run along its edges.
So a car that dies in Air Park and has to go to a shop near campus has a real drive ahead. A car that dies near campus and goes to a shop near campus doesn't. Same car, same problem, very different trip. That's the main reason two Lincoln tows can be priced so differently.
Should I tow it all the way across town?
Ask yourself where the car really needs to go. If your regular shop is near campus, the longer trip may be worth it to you. If a shop closer to Air Park can do the work, the trip is shorter. You choose. Just tell us before we set the price, so the text matches the plan.
What else changes a Lincoln tow price?
- Your vehicle. A small car is a quick load. An all-wheel-drive SUV may need a flatbed.
- What went wrong. A dead battery or a flat may not need a tow. See flat tire change help if you have a working spare.
- Where it's stuck. A car in a ditch or on soft ground may need a winch-out before it can load.
- Where it goes. Shop, dealer or home. Pick it before you call.
How does Sentinel set your price?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. You tell us where the car is, what you drive and where it should go. We text your price before anyone is dispatched. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first, and you decide. Then we stay with you by text until help arrives. That's the Stay-With-You Promise.
If anyone is hurt, or your car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service. For more on Lincoln roads and weather, see the Lincoln towing page.

UNL Area Tow Price Questions
Is a tow near the UNL campus cheaper than one from Air Park?
It's often a shorter trip, and trip length is a big part of the price. But a game day closure or a tight garage can make a campus job bigger. Your price is texted and locked before dispatch, so you know first.
My car won't start after a Husker game. Should I call right away?
If you're safe, wait for the crowd to thin out. Streets around the stadium close before and after games, so getting a truck in can take extra driving. When you call, tell us the lot or street and what the car is doing.
Can I leave my dead car in a UNL lot until Monday?
UNL says a car that isn't running on campus can be towed or wheel locked. Call Parking and Transit Services at 402-472-1800 to ask about a temporary repair permit. It can last up to one week.
Does Sentinel get cars out of impound near campus?
No. Sentinel doesn't do impounds. Once your car is released, we can send a tow to your shop if it won't drive.
