Three Interstates Carry Most of Missouri

I-70 crosses the state from the Kansas line in Kansas City to St. Louis, running roughly alongside the Missouri River. I-44 is the longest Interstate in Missouri, about 293 miles from the Oklahoma line near Joplin, through Springfield, to downtown St. Louis. I-55 comes up from the Arkansas line to the Poplar Street Bridge over the Mississippi.

Weather that swings hard

Missouri has no mountains or ocean nearby to soften its weather, so it gets cold Arctic air one stretch and hot, humid Gulf air the next. Summers are hot, humid and wet, and winters run cool to cold. Down in the Bootheel, the climate turns humid subtropical. The state also sits in Tornado Alley and gets severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. When a storm has passed and it's safe, a partner can change a flat tire or tow a car that stalled out.

The Ozarks

Springfield sits on the Springfield Plateau of the Ozarks. The city is mostly flat, with rolling hills and cliffs around its edges, and lakes like Table Rock and Stockton are within a drive. Keys locked in the car at a lake lot are a real way to lose a day. A partner can handle the lockout or a tow to a nearby shop.

Missouri questions

Before You Call in Missouri

Does Missouri's move-over law protect the tow truck?

Yes. RSMo 304.022 counts a wrecker or tow truck doing emergency service as an emergency vehicle. It covers stopped vehicles showing red, red and blue, amber, or amber and white lights. On a road with at least four lanes and two or more going their way, approaching drivers must move out of the lane next to it if it's safe. Otherwise they must slow down and pass with caution.

My car quit between exits on I-44. What do you need from me?

Your direction, the last exit or mile marker, your vehicle and what happened. If you'd like, give us one person's number too, and we'll text them where you are and when help should arrive.

Check closures and conditions on MoDOT's Traveler Information Map before a long drive.
