Why a Tow Costs More Out on I-44 or US 65 Than Near the Diverging Diamond in Springfield, Missouri

In Springfield, Missouri, the biggest part of a tow price is the haul: the miles from your car to the shop you pick. A car that quits at the diverging diamond, where I-44 meets Kansas Expressway, may have a short ride to a shop on that street. A car that quits east on I-44 near Strafford, or down US 65, rides a lot farther. What broke, how the car sits and the I-44 work zone matter too. You get the exact price by text before anyone is sent.

What goes into a Springfield tow price?

No two tows are the same job. Here is what moves the number:

  • The haul. Miles from your car to the address you choose. This is usually the big one.
  • The drive to reach you. A truck may have to go past you and turn back to get on your side of a divided road.
  • Where the car sits. A wide shoulder is easy. A narrow work zone lane or a ditch is a harder job.
  • What went wrong. A car that won't roll takes more work than one with a dead battery.
  • What you drive. A small sedan and an all-wheel-drive pickup need different setups.

None of these is a secret. Tell us each one plainly, and the price you get fits the real job.

Why does a breakdown at the diverging diamond often cost less to tow?

Springfield opened the first diverging diamond interchange in the nation on June 21, 2009. It sits on I-44 at exit 77, where Route 13 crosses as Kansas Expressway. Kansas Expressway is one of the city's main streets, so a shop along it can be a short haul.

Now say the car quits on I-44 near exit 88, the Route 125 exit for Strafford. Your shop is the same one on Kansas Expressway. By the mileposts, exit 88 sits about 11 miles east of exit 77. Your car has to ride all of that, then get off and head into town. Same truck, same hookup. Far more road.

The interchange itself doesn't set the price. The trip from your car to your shop does. If you live in Strafford and your mechanic is there, the far exit can be the short haul.

How far apart are the I-44 exits in Springfield?

I-44 runs across the north side of the city. These are its Springfield exits, west to east:

ExitRoad
72Chestnut Expressway (airport)
75US 160, West Bypass
77Route 13, Kansas Expressway (diverging diamond)
80Glenstone Avenue
82US 65
84Mulroy Road and Beaver Road
88Route 125, Strafford and Fair Grove

From exit 72 to exit 88 is about 16 miles of freeway. So "I broke down on 44 in Springfield" could mean two spots far apart. Give the last exit you passed and your direction. That one detail can change your haul more than anything else you say.

Why does US 65 add miles?

US 65 is the Schoolcraft Freeway. It runs up the east side of town. Going south to north, it meets the James River Freeway (US 60), then Sunshine Street, Chestnut Expressway, Division Street and Kearney Street. Then it reaches I-44.

If your car dies on US 65 near the James River Freeway and your shop is on the west side, the haul crosses most of the city. If your shop is on Sunshine Street close to US 65, it can be short. Before you call, look up where your shop sits. Then tell us which exit you're nearest.

What about the trip back toward Nixa or Ozark?

Lots of drivers live south of town in Nixa or Ozark. If you want the car taken home, or to a shop down there, say so. The price we text is built on the drop-off you give, so name the real one from the start.

How is the Forward 44 work zone changing tows?

MoDOT is rebuilding I-44 through Springfield. The Forward 44 project replaces pavement and widens I-44 to 6 lanes between Kansas Expressway and US 65. It also replaces the I-44 bridges over Broadway, Grant and National Avenues. MoDOT's page lists a finish of May 2027.

During the work, MoDOT says I-44 keeps two lanes each way, except for short closures at night. Lanes are narrowed and shifted. The Glenstone Avenue on-ramp to westbound I-44, at exit 80, is closed until the project is done.

That changes a tow in two ways:

  • Room to work. A narrowed lane with barrels leaves less space to load a car than an open shoulder.
  • The route in. A closed ramp can force your driver to go around to reach your side of the road.

Which ramps were set to close this fall?

MoDOT scheduled the Kansas Expressway on-ramp to eastbound I-44 to close starting Monday, October 5, 2026, for up to 14 days. The ramp from eastbound I-44 to southbound US 65 had the same start and length. National Avenue under I-44, between Evergreen and Norton Streets, was set to close for up to 3 months. Plans shift, so check the MoDOT Traveler Information Map before you drive. Then tell us if you're stuck near a closed ramp.

Can you leave the car on the I-44 shoulder and come back for it?

Not for long. Missouri law lets police have an unattended car towed off an interstate or freeway in an urbanized area after 10 hours. If it's a serious hazard, they can do it right away. Outside an urbanized area, the line is 24 hours. The owner pays the towing and storage charges.

Sentinel doesn't do impounds. A police tow means a trip to a storage lot and charges to pay before the car comes back. Set up your own tow while you're still with the car.

Is it a tow, or a smaller job?

Not every stop needs a haul at all. The Springfield airport logs about 95 nights a year at or below 32 F, per NOAA normals. Your car sits overnight in a lot off Glenstone, and the engine just clicks in the morning. A jump start in that parking spot may be all it needs. No haul, no shop.

Summer is hard on cars here too. NOAA's normals show about 40 days a year at 90 F or more. If the engine overheated or made a loud bang on US 65, plan on a car tow. Describe the noise, the smell or the warning light. Those details help the price match the real work.

How do you keep the haul short?

  1. Know where the car is going. Look up the shop's address before you dial.
  2. Ask about nearby shops. A trusted shop near your exit can cut the miles.
  3. Name the exit and direction. "Eastbound I-44 past exit 82" beats "on 44."
  4. Flag the Forward 44 zone. Barrels, a shifted lane or a closed ramp all change the job.
  5. Say what you drive. Give the year, make and model, and tell us if the wheels still turn.

While you wait, how do you stay safe?

If anyone is hurt, or your car is stuck in a live lane, call 911 first. Sentinel is not an emergency service. You can also dial *55 to reach the Missouri Highway Patrol. MoDOT says to pull as far onto the right shoulder as you can and stay inside the car. Keep your hazard lights on and your seat belt fastened. Missouri's move-over law counts a tow truck doing emergency work as an emergency vehicle, so passing drivers must move over or slow down for your driver too.

How does Sentinel set your price?

Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. You tell us the exit, the car and the drop-off. We text your price before dispatch, and that price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide. Then we check on you by text until your driver arrives. That's the Stay-With-You Promise. You can also track your truck on a map. For more on roads around town, see our Springfield, MO towing page.

Springfield, MO Tow Price Questions

Why does my tow from I-44 near Strafford cost more than one near Kansas Expressway?

It's usually the miles. Exit 88 is about 11 miles east of exit 77 on I-44. If your shop is in the middle of Springfield, the car rides that whole way. A shop closer to where you stopped can shorten the haul.

Will the I-44 construction make my tow cost more?

It can make some jobs harder. Narrow lanes and closed ramps can force your driver to go around. The price we text already counts the job you describe. Once you accept it, it won't go up unless the job changes, and then you decide.

Is the diverging diamond a bad place to break down?

It's a tricky place, because the lanes cross over. Get as far out of traffic as you can and stay in the car. Tell us you're at exit 77 and which way you were headed, so your driver comes in on the right side.

Can I leave my car on the shoulder overnight?

It's risky. Missouri law lets police have an unattended car towed off an urban interstate after 10 hours, or right away if it's a hazard. You'd pay the towing and storage. Your own tow is the easier fix.
