Shoreline, valleys and hills

A Small State With Crowded Highways

Connecticut doesn't take long to cross, but its highways rarely feel empty. I-95 follows the shore for 111.57 miles from the New York line to Rhode Island. Between New Haven and New York City it ranks among the most congested highways in the country, and when it backs up, the jam spills onto the Merritt Parkway and US 1. A dead car in that traffic feels a lot worse than the same breakdown on an empty road.

Here's how the main routes lay out:

  • I-95 through Greenwich, Stamford, Bridgeport and New Haven, then New London, Groton and Mystic.
  • I-84 from Danbury through Waterbury and Hartford to Union.
  • I-91 north from New Haven through Hartford, 58 miles in the state.
  • I-395 north and south near the eastern border.
  • Route 15, the Merritt and Wilbur Cross parkways. The Merritt has two lanes each way, and some of its old ramps are short and sharp, with a few ending at stop signs.
  • Route 8 up the Naugatuck River Valley, and US 7 near the New York line.

When you call, give us the route, your direction and the last exit number. From there we send a partner for a tow, a jump start or fuel if you ran dry in traffic.

Connecticut General Statutes

Connecticut's Move Over Law Covers Your Car, Too

Connecticut's law reaches past police cars and fire trucks. C.G.S. 14-283b treats a wrecker with flashing lights as an emergency vehicle on highways with two or more lanes each way. Drivers coming up on one must slow to a reasonable speed below the limit, and a driver in the next lane must shift over a lane unless that's unsafe. Another part of the same section adds any stopped vehicle on the shoulder, lane or breakdown lane. So a driver in the lane beside your stalled car must move over for you as well, when it's safe.

The law helps, but the shoulder of I-95 is still a tight spot. Keep your hazards on. If you can't get well away from traffic, stay belted in until help arrives.

My car was towed from a store lot. Can you get it back?

No. We don't handle impounds or private-lot releases. Under C.G.S. 14-145, a commercial lot's signs must say where towed cars are stored and how to get them back, and the wrecker must report the tow to local police. Start with the signs or the police department's non-emergency line.

Can you tow my car from Danbury to Hartford?

We keep tows local. Your car goes to a shop near where it stopped. If you don't know one in that town, ask on the call and we'll help.
