Jump Start Help Near Waterbury's Mixmaster: A Safer Plan Than the Shoulder

If your battery is failing near the Mixmaster in Waterbury, don't plan on a jump from the bridge. Keep driving to the next exit and get to a parking lot while the car still runs. If it dies on I-84 or Route 8 and you're in a live lane, call 911 first. On weekdays, that call can bring the free CTDOT Safety Patrol. Once you're off the highway, get a jump start there.
Why is the Mixmaster a bad spot to wait for a jump?
A jump needs room. Two cars sit close together, hoods up. Someone stands between them to clip on the cables. On the Mixmaster, that space mostly doesn't exist.
I-84 and Route 8 stack on top of each other there, on a double-decked bridge over the Naugatuck River. Eastbound I-84 runs on the upper deck. Westbound runs below it. Ramps peel off left and right. There's no sidewalk, no lot and no grass to step onto.
CTDOT itself says the interchange "no longer meets the needs of travelers." It has picked two plans that would unstack it. But CTDOT also says the full rebuild will take decades. So for now, you drive the old stack.
That's why the best jump near the Mixmaster happens somewhere else. A store lot, a side street, a gas station. Anywhere you can open both doors without traffic beside you.
What's different about I-84 eastbound right now?
CTDOT is rebuilding part of I-84 eastbound downtown. If you drive it, know these changes before your battery acts up:
- The I-84 eastbound Exit 21 off-ramp is closed for good. Don't count on it as a way off.
- Daily lane and shoulder closures run on I-84 eastbound. They cover the stretch from the Exit 30A on-ramp, where Route 8 northbound joins, to the Exit 22 off-ramp.
- Those closures started June 15, 2026. CTDOT says they run through the spring of 2027.
- Expect overnight closures of I-84 eastbound from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Saturday. The Exit 30A on-ramp may be detoured at night.
- Police and signs guide traffic through the work zone.
A closed shoulder is the part that matters most. If your battery light comes on right after you merge from Route 8, the usual bail-out spot may be cones and barrels. Your best move is to keep rolling to Exit 22 and get off.
The whole project, including a longer added lane from the Route 8 ramp to Exit 22, is set to finish in the summer of 2028. Schedules can slip for weather. Check CTroads before a night drive through downtown.
My battery light just came on. What should I do?
A battery light while you're driving often means the car isn't charging. The engine can keep running on what's left in the battery, but not for long. Here's how to stretch it:
- Turn off the heat or air, the radio and the seat heaters. Unplug your phone charger.
- Keep your headlights on if it's dark or raining. Being seen matters more than saving power.
- Don't shut the engine off to "rest" it. It may not start again.
- Take the next exit, not the one you planned on. Get off before the Mixmaster if you can.
- Pull into a lot with space on both sides of your car. Then call.
If the car makes it to a lot, you're in good shape. A driver can pull in nose to nose with you. You can stand on pavement, not in a lane.
What if the jump works but the light stays on?
Then the battery may not be the real problem. A car that isn't charging can die again a few miles down the road. In that case, a car tow to a shop is often the smarter call than another drive across the stack.
What if the car dies on the bridge itself?
Sometimes there's no exit in time. The car coasts, the dash goes dark, and you're stopped on a deck with traffic going by. Here's the order:
- Turn on your hazards right away.
- Steer as far right as the car will roll, if there's room.
- Stay in your seat with your belt on. Keep the doors closed.
- If you're stopped in a travel lane, or anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
- Don't get out to flag down help or to pop the hood.
Then figure out where you are. Upper deck means you were going east on I-84. Lower deck means west. If you came in on Route 8, say north or south. Add the last exit sign you passed. That is the location anyone you call will need.
Connecticut law helps you here a little. Under C.G.S. 14-283b, a driver in the lane next to a car stopped on the shoulder or breakdown lane must move over one lane, unless it isn't safe to do so. That covers your car, not just police and tow trucks. Don't count on every driver doing it, though. Stay inside.
Will the CTDOT Safety Patrol jump my car for free?
It can. The CTDOT Safety Patrol is run by state transportation workers. Its trucks cover I-84 and Route 8, along with other state highways. Here's what to know:
| Question | What CTDOT says |
|---|---|
| What do they do? | Jump starts, flat tire changes, fluids like fuel and water, and pushing cars to the shoulder |
| What does it cost? | Nothing. Patrol drivers can't take tips. |
| When does it run? | Monday to Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. |
| How do you reach it? | You can't call it directly. It comes through a 911 call or CTDOT's Highway Operation Center. |
| Does it run in snowstorms? | No. |
CTDOT also tells drivers on covered routes to stay with their car while they wait during those hours.
So the patrol is a real option on a weekday commute. It isn't there on a Saturday night, a Sunday morning or in the middle of a storm. And it's built to clear the highway, not to follow you home. If the patrol gets you moving and the car dies again in your driveway, you'll need a different plan.
Why do Waterbury batteries quit on cold mornings?
Cold makes a weak battery weaker. A car that cranked slowly all fall can just click on the first hard freeze.
Waterbury gets plenty of those. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Wigwam Reservoir station near Thomaston show about 166 nights a year at or below 32°F. About 9 nights a year drop below zero.
That's when the calls come from the places you'd expect. A car parked overnight on a hill in Bunker Hill or East Mountain. A car left in a downtown lot through a cold workday. A car that sat in a downtown garage all weekend. In each case, the fix is the same: get the jump where the car is parked, before you head for the highway. Don't try to coax a weak battery across the Mixmaster.
If you're in a parking garage, tell the dispatcher which level you're on and whether there's a height limit sign at the entrance. That helps your driver plan the approach.
What should you have ready when you call?
- Where you are: the lot or street name, or the highway, direction and last exit.
- If you're near the interchange, which deck you were on.
- What the car does: clicks, cranks slowly, or nothing at all.
- Whether the battery light came on while you were driving.
- Your make and model, and the color, so your driver can pick you out.
The click-or-nothing detail matters. A clicking sound often points to a weak battery, which a jump start can fix. A car that died while driving is more likely a charging problem, which may need a tow. Telling us up front means the right help comes the first time.
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. We text you a locked price before anyone is sent. Then we check on you by text until your driver arrives, and you can track your truck on a map. The Stay-With-You Promise spells out the terms. Mixmaster Jump Start Questions
Can I get a jump start on the Mixmaster itself?
It's a poor place for one. The decks have no lot or walkway, and a jump puts a person between two cars. If you're stuck in a lane there, call 911. Get the jump once the car is off the bridge.
Is there still a shoulder on I-84 eastbound near Exit 22?
Not always. CTDOT has daily lane and shoulder closures from the Exit 30A on-ramp to the Exit 22 off-ramp, set to run through the spring of 2027. Plan to take Exit 22 if your car starts acting up.
Does the CTDOT Safety Patrol work weekends in Waterbury?
Its regular hours are Monday to Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. It doesn't run during snowstorms. You reach it through 911, not by calling it directly.
My car started after a jump. Can I drive across the Mixmaster now?
If the battery light stayed off, it's usually fine to drive to a shop or parts store to get the battery tested. If the battery light is still on, the car may not be charging. Consider a tow instead of risking a second stall on the bridge.
