Where Tucson Breakdowns Happen, and What We Send

Tucson has no beltway. Two interstates cross the metro, and almost everything else runs on surface streets. So a breakdown here is as likely at a light on Speedway as on the freeway. Here's how the usual spots play out.

I-10 through Marana and west of downtown, where traffic from Phoenix pours in

Pull as far right as you can and stay buckled in. Give us the nearest exit or mile marker. A car that won't move gets a tow off the interstate.

I-19 south toward Sahuarita and Green Valley

I-19 uses kilometer posts, not mileposts. Read us the number on the nearest post. It pins you down fast.

Oracle Road, Speedway or Broadway, in the middle of rush hour

Hazards on, and get into a side street or lot if the car still rolls. Tell us the cross street.

SR 210 toward Davis-Monthan and the southeast side

It's a short expressway. If you stall on it, stay in the car and call from there.

A shredded tire on hot pavement in a Tucson Mall parking lot

If you have a good spare, it's a flat tire change. No spare means a tow to a tire shop.

Monsoon and heat

Summer in Tucson Is Two Kinds of Hard on a Car

First comes the heat. At the airport, NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals show about 52 days a year at 100°F or hotter, and about 144 days at 90 or above. July averages a high near 100. Heat like that cooks batteries, cracks old belts and hoses, and blows out tires that were already worn.

Then the monsoon arrives. Storms build in the afternoon and dump heavy rain fast. Large parts of the city have no storm sewers, so main streets can flood for a few hours. Some underpasses even have depth markers painted on their supports.

If the car dies in rising water, get out and move to higher ground if you can do it safely. Call 911 if you're trapped. Once you're safe, call us for the tow. The National Weather Service says 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars.

Arizona's "Stupid Motorist Law"

Drive around a barricade onto a flooded road, and A.R.S. 28-910 makes you liable for the cost of the emergency response that pulls you or your car out.

The law also lets insurance policies leave that cost out. So if the street ahead is barricaded and full of water, turn around. Calling a tow from dry ground beats paying for a rescue from a wash.

Arizona law on the shoulder

Hazards On: Arizona's Move-Over Rule Covers You

Under A.R.S. 28-775, drivers coming up on any stationary vehicle with flashing lights or warning lights must move to a lane that isn't next to it on a road with two or more lanes their way. If they can't change lanes safely, they have to slow down. That includes your stalled car with its hazards on, and it includes the partner truck that comes for you.

If a dust storm rolls in while you're driving, the National Weather Service says to pull off the pavement as far as you can, turn off your lights, set the brake and take your foot off the brake pedal. Road closures show up on AZ 511.

Tucson questions

What Tucson Drivers Ask Us

My car won't start after sitting in a hot parking lot. Is it the battery?

Often it is. Heat is hard on batteries, and a weak one can quit after a day in the sun. If it clicks or the dash lights are dim, a jump start may get you home. If it dies again soon, plan on a new battery.

Can I wait in the car while it's 100 degrees out?

Only if it's safe to run the engine and the AC. If not, find shade or a nearby store. We text you your driver's name, photo and truck, and you can track the truck on a map. So you can step away from the car and still spot them when they pull in.

Will you tow my car out of a flooded wash?

Not while water is still moving. That's a job for first responders. Once the water is gone and the car sits within reach of the road, a partner can tow it. If it ended up deep in a wash, it needs a heavy recovery company, and we'll tell you so on the call.

How does the Stay-With-You Promise work on a Tucson call?

The same as everywhere. We check on you by text until the truck arrives, text your family your location if you want, and hold the partner to your locked price. Read the details on the promise page.

Roadside help in Tucson, AZ

Tow Truck and Roadside Services in Tucson

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network for Tucson drivers. Tell us what happened, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one, like many all-wheel-drive cars), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.

The Sentinel Stay-With-You Promise

Seven Promises on Every Tucson Call

Read the fine print on the promise page.

  1. We stay with you. From your call until the truck arrives, we check on you by text.

  2. See your driver before they arrive. You get their name, photo and truck by text, and you can track your truck on a map.

  3. Your family knows too. Give us one number, and we text them your location and arrival time.

  4. Photo-protected tow. Before hookup, your driver photographs all 4 sides of your vehicle. We text you the photos.

  5. Price locked by text. You get your price by text before we dispatch. That price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price first and you decide.

  6. Never stranded after. Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed, or we help you get a ride. We also point you to a good repair shop.

  7. Free Sentinel Circle. After your first job, your vehicle is on file. Next time, just text "TOW" for priority dispatch.
