Towing in Auburn: I-85, College Street and the Shug Jordan Parkway
Auburn is a driving town. There's no city bus beyond the campus shuttle, and most trips happen by car. So when a car quits, it's usually on one of a few roads:
- I-85. The main highway between Montgomery and Atlanta has several Auburn exits. Exit 51 is College Street, where US 29 joins the interstate. Exit 57 is Bent Creek Road, toward the airport. Exits 58 and 62 lead into Opelika on US 280.
- College Street. It runs from exit 51 up to Toomer's Corner at Magnolia Avenue, where campus meets downtown.
- Shug Jordan Parkway. Route 147 loops around the west and north sides of town, then heads toward LaFayette on Heath Road.
- US 280. It ties Auburn to Opelika and runs with Shug Jordan for a stretch on the north side.
Call and tell us the road, your direction and the nearest exit or cross street. We text a locked price, then send the nearest available vetted partner. A dead battery in a campus lot is a jump start. Keys locked in at Auburn Mall is a lockout. A car that won't run on I-85 gets a tow to your shop.
Football Saturdays
Game Day Changes Everything
Jordan-Hare Stadium sits on main campus, a few blocks from downtown. On home football weekends, huge crowds come in hours or even days early to tailgate. Streets fill up. Lots fill up. A car that ran a radio or a TV all afternoon may not start when it's time to leave.
If your car won't start after the game, don't panic and don't walk off to find help. Stay with the car. Call and tell us the lot or deck, the level and a landmark. The truck will be moving through game traffic, so it can take longer than on a quiet Tuesday. You'll get the driver's name, photo and truck by text, and a link to watch the truck on a map.
If you can wait until traffic thins out, that's often the easier call. We keep checking on you by text either way.
Parking downtown
The city runs two downtown decks, on Wright Street and Burton Street. On game days, downtown parking is first come, first served, with no reservations. Details are on the City of Auburn parking page.
Tell us which deck and which level you're on. It changes what kind of truck can reach you.
East Alabama weather
Spring Storms, Summer Heat and the Odd Freeze
Auburn gets real weather all year. Here's what it means for your car.
Severe storms
From late winter into early summer, storms with high winds, hail and tornadoes are common here. In March 2019, an EF4 tornado struck Beauregard, in Lee County. If a warning is out, don't sit in a stalled car on I-85. Get to a sturdy building.
Heat
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Auburn show about 47 days a year at 90°F or hotter, and humidity pushes the heat index past 100. Heat wears down batteries and cooling systems. Wait in shade if you can, not in a closed car.
Cold mornings and hills
The same normals show about 43 nights a year at or below freezing. That's enough to finish off a weak battery. North Auburn has hills and deep hollows, and the land near Chewacla drops off sharply. A slide off a wet shoulder there is often a winch-out.
Alabama law
Alabama's Move Over Law Protects the Truck, Not Your Car
Alabama's move over law is the John Hubbard Move Over Act, Code of Alabama 32-5A-58.2. It covers police and emergency vehicles, utility and road crews, and a wrecker with amber lights working on the roadside. On I-85, drivers must leave the lane closest to that truck. If they can't do it safely, they must slow to at least 15 mph under the limit.
Here's the catch. The law doesn't list an ordinary broken-down car. Your hazard lights alone don't make passing drivers move over. So get as far off the road as you can, all the way past the white line. If you can reach an exit, take it. Stay buckled in with your hazards on while you wait.
Before a long drive, you can check ALGO Traffic, the state's traffic site, for crashes and closures on I-85.

Auburn questions
Auburn Drivers Ask
My car died in a parking deck downtown. Can a tow truck get in?
Sometimes. Tow trucks are tall, so tell us the deck and level. A jump or a lockout usually works anywhere. If the car needs a tow from an upper level, it may have to be rolled to a spot the truck can reach first.
Is this Auburn, Alabama?
Yes. This page covers Auburn, Alabama, and Lee County. There are other towns named Auburn, so say "Auburn, Alabama" when you call.
I broke down on I-85 on the way to Atlanta. How far will you tow me?
We do local tows, not long trips between cities. A partner can take your car to a shop in Auburn or Opelika, or to your home if it's nearby. Your price comes by text before anyone is sent.
My kid is stuck near campus. Can you text me updates?
Yes. Give us your number and we'll text you their location and when the truck should arrive. That's part of the Stay-With-You Promise.
