Mobile Bay to the Tennessee line

One Long Spine, Four Big Branches

I-65 ties together six of Alabama's 10 largest cities. It runs 366 miles from I-10 near Mobile, through Montgomery and Birmingham, past Decatur and into Tennessee near Ardmore. The other interstates branch off that spine, so when you call, start with the road you're on and the last exit you saw.

I-10 over the top of Mobile Bay

East of downtown Mobile, I-10 dips into the George Wallace Tunnel under the Mobile River, then rides the Jubilee Parkway viaducts over the water toward Daphne and Spanish Fort. If the car still moves, keep rolling until you're back over land with a safe spot to pull off.

I-20 and I-59 into Birmingham

The pair share one road from the Mississippi line to Birmingham. There, I-20 bends east for Atlanta and I-59 carries on to the northeast corner of the state. At the north edge of downtown, both cross I-65 at the interchange known as Malfunction Junction.

I-85 out of Montgomery

It starts at I-65 in the capital and runs east-northeast to the Georgia line, the main road toward Atlanta.

I-22 toward Memphis

It leaves I-65 north of Birmingham and heads northwest into Mississippi.

Whatever stopped you, the fix usually falls into a few buckets. A shredded tire on the shoulder is a flat tire change. A car that clicks and won't turn over after a hot day parked is a jump start. Anything unsafe to drive gets a tow to a shop close to where it quit.

Heat, rain and two tornado seasons

In Alabama, Storms Matter More Than Snow

Alabama summers are among the hottest in the country, and rain falls hard all year, about 56 inches on average. Tropical storms and hurricanes don't stay on the coast. They can soak towns far inland as they weaken. When one heads for the Gulf shore, I-65 can switch to contraflow, with every lane running north from Mobile to Montgomery.

Tornadoes bring the bigger surprise. Spring is the main season, but Alabama also has a second one in November and December, and the Tennessee River Valley in the north is the most exposed. Snow is rare. North of Montgomery, a dusting a few times a winter is normal, with a heavier storm every few years. A cold snap like that is often when a tired battery gives up.

Never drive into water covering a road. The National Weather Service says a foot of moving water can carry off most cars. Turn around, then call from dry ground.

The John Hubbard Move Over Act

Under Code of Alabama 32-5A-58.2, a wrecker showing amber lights while it loads or recovers a car on the roadside is protected, along with police, emergency and road crews. With two or more lanes going your way, passing drivers must leave the lane next to it. If they can't do that safely, they must slow to at least 15 mph under the limit. On a two-lane road, they keep as far away as their lane allows and slow down.

The law doesn't list an ordinary broken-down car, so while you wait, stay buckled in or stand well back from traffic. Check ALGO Traffic for closures before a long drive.

Alabama Questions

Is there a Sentinel office in Alabama?

No. Sentinel is a network. When you call, we find a vetted tow company near you, text you the price before anyone rolls, and stay in touch until help arrives.

I'm on a rural highway between towns. Will anyone come?

Give us the highway, your direction and the nearest mile marker or crossroad. If a partner can reach that stretch, you'll get the price by text first. If nobody covers it yet, we'll say so on the call, so you can try another option right away.
