Jump Start Help Near Red Deer, From Gasoline Alley to the QEII Shoulder

If your battery dies near Red Deer, first figure out where you are. A fuel stop in Gasoline Alley or a lot in town is an easy jump. Turn off the lights and heater, and stop cranking. On the QEII shoulder, keep your hazards on and stay buckled in. Call 911 first if you're in a live lane or anyone is hurt. Then call for a jump start and give the nearest exit number.
Where did your battery die?
The answer changes what you do next. Red Deer has three kinds of spots where batteries quit.
- A parking lot. Bower Place, Parkland Mall, a grocery store in Clearview Ridge. This is the easy one. You're off the road, and a driver can pull right up.
- A fuel stop in Gasoline Alley. You stopped for gas on the way north, and now the car only clicks. You're safe, but you may be blocking a pump.
- The QEII shoulder. The car died while you drove, and you coasted to the edge. This is the risky one. Read the next section first.
In a lot, you can wait in the car with the doors locked. At a pump, tell the station staff you're stuck. They may help you push the car clear of the pump. On a highway shoulder, don't push anything.
What should you do on the QEII shoulder?
Near Red Deer, the QEII carries heavy traffic at highway speed. A car on the shoulder sits a few steps from trucks doing 110 km/h. Your job is to be seen and stay put.
- Turn on your hazards right away.
- Stay in your seat with your belt on. A guardrail or a ditch is not a safe place to stand in winter.
- Call 911 if you stopped in a live lane, if anyone is hurt, or if you smell smoke. Sentinel is not an emergency service.
- If it's snowing hard and you need heat, check that the tailpipe isn't buried in snow before you run the engine.
Alberta's rules say you can't park on a provincial highway shoulder except in a few cases. One of them is a vehicle that can't move under its own power. A dead battery counts. You're allowed to be there, but it's still a place to leave soon.
Why a tow truck won't just stop for you
Here's a rule most drivers don't know. A 2025 change to Alberta rules says a tow truck driver must not stop on a highway within 200 m of a damaged or disabled car unless someone asks. That can be a peace officer, emergency crews, or you, the owner or driver. So don't wait for a passing truck to pull over. Make the call yourself.
How do you tell the driver where you are?
On the QEII, exit numbers are the clearest way. Here are the ones around the south end, where most fuel stops are:
| Exit | Road | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| 391 | McKenzie Road | South end of Gasoline Alley |
| 392 | Gasoline Alley East, Willow Street | Northbound exit only |
| 393 | Leva Avenue, Gasoline Alley | Southbound exit only |
| 394 | Gaetz Avenue | Into the city center |
| 395 | Taylor Drive and 19 Street | Into the south end |
| 401 | Highway 11 (67 Street) | Toward Sylvan Lake |
Exits 392 and 393 trip people up. Each one only works in one direction. If you tell a driver "Gasoline Alley," also say whether you came off northbound or southbound. Gasoline Alley sits in Red Deer County, just south of the city, and the highway runs right through it. East side and west side are not the same trip.
In a lot, name the store and the row. If you can, share your location by text. Then you can track your truck on a map as it comes.
How cold does it get in Red Deer, and why does that kill batteries?
A cold battery has less power to give. A cold engine is harder to turn over. Put those together on a frozen morning, and a weak battery gives up.
Environment and Climate Change Canada's normals for the Red Deer airport show how often that happens. These are averages from 1981 to 2010:
| Month | Average low | Nights below minus 20 C | Nights below minus 30 C |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | About minus 11 C | About 3 | Less than 1 |
| December | About minus 16 C | About 8 | About 2 |
| January | About minus 18 C | About 11 | About 3 |
| February | About minus 15 C | About 7 | About 2 |
| March | About minus 10 C | About 3 | Less than 1 |
January also brings about 8 days with wind chill below minus 30. That matters for you, not the battery. If you have to wait outside the car, cover your skin. Frostbite comes on fast in that kind of cold.
What should you do before the driver gets there?
- Stop cranking. Each try drains what's left. One more try at most, then wait.
- Turn everything off. Lights, heater fan, seat heaters, radio. Unplug your phone charger too.
- Listen for the sound. Fast clicking means a weak battery. Slow cranking means low and cold. Silence with no dash lights could be a loose cable. Tell your driver which one.
- Look at the battery if it's safe. If it's cracked, swollen or leaking, don't jump it. Say so on the call, because you'll need a tow.
- Find your cables. Alberta's emergency kit list includes booster cables. If you carry a set, tell the driver.
When is a jump start not enough?
A jump start gets the engine running. It doesn't fix the reason the battery went flat. Here's when you'll likely need more:
- The car starts, then dies again a few blocks later. That points to the charging system, not just the battery.
- It cranks strong but won't fire. That isn't a battery problem.
- The battery is damaged, or there's a burning smell.
- It started after a jump yesterday and won't start today.
In those cases, the fix is a tow to a repair shop. If the job changes from a jump to a tow, you get the new price by text first. You decide before anything moves.
What if a QEII closure sends you onto Highway 2A?
The QEII between Calgary and Edmonton is known for winter crashes. Some close the highway, and traffic gets sent onto parts of Highway 2A. Near Red Deer, 2A comes up from Penhold along Taylor Drive and 19 Street, then runs up Gaetz Avenue. North of the city it goes on to Blackfalds and Lacombe.
A detour means slow traffic, stop and go, with the heater and lights on full. That's hard on a weak battery. If your car stalls in detour traffic, hazards on and stay in the car. Give the driver the street and the nearest cross street, not the QEII exit.
Inside the city, the Gaetz Avenue bridge between 45 and 43 Street is being replaced through November 2026. Traffic there is down to two lanes. Before a winter drive, check 511 Alberta or dial 5-1-1 for closures in Central Alberta.
Who is coming when you call Sentinel?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. We don't own trucks. A vetted local partner tow company does the jump. We lock your price by text first, send your driver's name and photo, and check on you by text until help arrives. That's the Stay-With-You Promise. When the partner's truck stops behind you with lights flashing, Alberta law says passing drivers must move over. If they can't, they must slow to 60 km/h or the posted limit, whichever is lower.
How can you avoid a dead battery next winter?
- Get it checked in the fall. Alberta's winter driving tips list the battery as part of getting your car ready.
- Plug in the block heater. Natural Resources Canada suggests a timer that turns it on 2 hours before you leave.
- Keep the tank over half full. Alberta says it helps if you get stranded, since you can run the engine for heat.
- Pack cables and a warm kit. Blanket, boots, gloves, a scraper and a phone charger.
If you drive the QEII often, those few steps can save you a cold wait. More on driving around the city is on our Red Deer towing page and the Alberta page.

Red Deer Jump Start Questions
My car died at a Gasoline Alley gas station. Do I need a tow?
Probably not. A dead battery at a pump is usually a jump start. Tell the station staff you're stuck, and give the exit you took off the QEII. If the car won't stay running after the jump, a tow is the next step.
Can I wait in my car on the QEII shoulder?
Yes, stay inside with your belt on and hazards flashing. Alberta allows stopping on the shoulder when a car can't move under its own power. Call 911 if you're in a live lane or anyone is hurt.
Why didn't a passing tow truck stop to help me?
Alberta rules changed in 2025. They bar tow trucks from stopping within 200 m of a disabled car on a highway unless asked. You, a peace officer or emergency crews can ask. So call for help yourself.
Should I jump a battery that looks swollen?
No. A cracked, swollen or leaking battery should not be jumped. Tell the dispatcher what you see. You'll likely need a tow to a shop instead.
