Trans-Canada and the river valley

New Brunswick's Main Routes

The Trans-Canada crosses New Brunswick from the Quebec border near Edmundston, follows the Saint John River Valley through Fredericton and Moncton, and carries on toward Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The three routes below tie much of the province together.

Route 2

Route 2 carries the main Trans-Canada route and is a four-lane divided highway along its whole length. The short Route 95 connector links it with I-95 in Maine.

Route 1

Route 1 is a four-lane freeway that runs about 239 km from near the US border at St. Stephen, through Saint John, to Route 2 at River Glade.

Route 8

Route 8 runs 261 km north from Fredericton to Miramichi and Bathurst.

On any of them, give us the route number, your direction and the nearest exit or community. We find a partner who can reach you for a tow, a fuel drop or a tire change, and text you the price before anyone is sent.

New Brunswick law

Half the Speed Limit Past a Tow Truck

Under section 168.1 of the Motor Vehicle Act, a tow truck counts as a service vehicle. When one with flashing amber lights, or an emergency vehicle with flashing red lights, is stopped on a highway, drivers on that side must cut their speed to half the posted limit and go with caution. Where there are two or more lanes on that side, drivers in the same lane or the next one over must also change lanes if they can do it safely.

Is help available off the main highways?

It can be. It depends on whether a partner covers the road you're on. Call with the nearest community and road name. If nobody can reach you yet, we'll say so plainly.

Maritime winter, the hard version

New Brunswick's climate is harsher than that of the other Maritime provinces. Around Moncton, the big snowfalls come from nor'easters, often mixed with rain or freezing rain, and the stormiest stretch usually runs from November to mid-January.
