The Crossroads of America

Interstates Everywhere, County Roads in Between

Indiana's motto comes from its highways. The routes that cross in and around Indianapolis are a big part of why the state calls itself the Crossroads of America. I-64, I-65, I-69, I-70, I-74, I-80, I-90 and I-94 all run through Indiana, along with loops and spurs like I-465 and I-469.

Snow is a north and south story here. Normal snowfall runs from about 80 inches in the northwest, along Lake Michigan, down to about 14 inches in the far south. Lake-effect snow makes up roughly half of it in the northwest and north central parts of the state. Midwinter lows average near 15 degrees in the far north and 24 in the far south. A cold snap in the north can mean a jump start before work. A snowy county road can mean a winch-out from a shallow ditch.

Off the Interstates, most Indiana counties name their county roads on a grid, which makes a rural breakdown easier to find. Some southern counties, and a few in the north, use plain road names instead. Either way, a partner can find you faster if you give us:

  • The county you're in
  • The road you're on and the nearest crossroad
  • Which way you were heading, and the last town you passed

Indiana law

Indiana's Move-Over Law Names Recovery Vehicles

Under IC 9-21-8-35, drivers must give room to a stopped recovery vehicle with flashing amber lights, and to a disabled vehicle with its hazard lights on. On a highway with at least four lanes and two or more going your way, they must move into a lane that isn't next to it if it's safe. If not, they must slow to at least 10 mph below the posted limit.

My car slid into a ditch off a county road. Can you pull it out?

If it's a shallow ditch close to the road, that's what a winch-out is for. If the car is deep in or far off the road, it may need more than a light-duty truck. We'll tell you that on the call before anyone drives out.

Check the roads first

INDOT's Trafficwise map shows closures, crashes and conditions across the state. Check it before a long winter drive, not after you're already stuck.
