Stopped on a California shoulder

Turn Your Hazards On. The Law Is on Your Side.

California's move-over rule reaches past emergency vehicles. Vehicle Code 21809 covers emergency vehicles, tow trucks and road crews, and it also covers any stationary vehicle showing flashing hazard lights, cones or flares. Approaching drivers must move to a lane that isn't next to you when they practically can. If they can't, they must slow to a reasonable and prudent speed.

So the first thing to do after you pull over is switch on your hazards. Then call us, tell us the route, the direction and the nearest exit, and stay buckled in if you're on a busy freeway shoulder.

Four kinds of California driving

Coast, Valley, Mountains and Desert

I-5 runs the length of the state, from the San Ysidro border crossing to the Oregon line, linking San Diego, Los Angeles, Stockton, Sacramento and Redding. US 101 takes the coast. It's a major freeway through Los Angeles and the Bay Area, a mix of freeway and expressway on the Central Coast, and mostly a two-lane road on the North Coast.

Through the Central Valley, Highway 99 is the main road between the valley cities. From about November to March, tule fog can cut visibility to near zero and bring freezing drizzle. Summers there are hot. In the mountains, the Sierra Nevada gets real winter. I-80 climbs to Donner Summit on its way to Nevada. On I-5, the Grapevine near Tejon Pass gets winter snow, and the CHP usually closes it when it does. East of the mountains, I-15 heads for Las Vegas and I-40 crosses 155 miles of the Mojave Desert from Barstow to Needles.

Whatever the setting, the job is the same. A partner near you handles the tow, the gas delivery or the lockout, at the price you agreed to by text.

The Grapevine is closed and I'm stuck at the bottom. Can a partner take me over?

Not while it's closed. We can help you where you are, with a jump, a tire change or a tow to a nearby shop, and you can wait out the closure somewhere safe.

Sentinel is a 24-hour towing and roadside assistance network across California. Tell us where you are, and we send a vetted local towing company near you with a truck suited to the job: a tow truck for a car that can't be driven (a flatbed where the vehicle needs one), or a service truck for a jump start, lockout, flat tire, fuel delivery or winch-out.
