Towed in Stockton? Confirm the City, County or CHP Before You Drive Anywhere

In Stockton, the spot your car was towed from decides who holds it. A tow off I-5, Highway 99 or the Crosstown Freeway is most likely the CHP. A tow from a city street is Stockton Police. A tow from Morada, Country Club, Garden Acres or Boggs Tract is the San Joaquin County Sheriff. Call that agency first. Each one has different release steps, and the wrong trip costs you a day.
Why does it matter who towed my car?
Three agencies tow cars in and around Stockton. Each runs its own release process. If you drive to a tow yard before you know which one it was, you can get turned away at the window.
Here is a common case. Your car dies on I-5 near downtown. You get a ride home and plan to come back in the morning. When you return, the car is gone. You call city police, and they have no record. That's because the freeway is CHP ground, not city ground.
A few minutes on the phone first saves a wasted drive and a full extra day of storage.
Where was your car when it was towed?
Start with the place, not the tow yard. Use this table to pick your first call.
| Where the car was | Most likely agency | First call |
|---|---|---|
| I-5, Highway 99 or the Crosstown Freeway (SR 4) | California Highway Patrol | CHP Stockton Communications Center, (209) 943-8600 |
| A street inside Stockton city limits | Stockton Police | Non-emergency line, (209) 937-8377 |
| Morada, Country Club, Garden Acres, Boggs Tract or another county area | San Joaquin County Sheriff | Sheriff non-emergency, (209) 468-4400 |
| A store, apartment or office parking lot | A private tow, reported to local police | Police for that area, then the tow company named on the lot sign |
Why is the freeway the CHP's job?
California Vehicle Code section 2400 gives the CHP primary control of state highways built as freeways. That covers the freeways that cut through Stockton. The same law lets city officers enforce traffic rules on a freeway inside city limits, too. So if the CHP has no record, call Stockton Police next.
Why does a Stockton address not settle it?
Several neighborhoods around Stockton sit outside the city. The Sheriff says its deputies cover the unincorporated parts of San Joaquin County. Its patrol areas include Morada, Country Club, Garden Acres and Boggs Tract. If your car was parked in one of those places, the Sheriff is your first call, even if your mail says Stockton.
What if the CHP towed my car?
The CHP sorts every tow into two groups. Ask which group yours is in, because it changes your next step.
- Stored. You go straight to the tow company. The registered owner or their agent can pick it up. The CHP lists examples: a crash that left the car unable to drive, a car parked on a freeway over four hours, or a car blocking a lane.
- Impounded. You need a release from the CHP office that ordered the tow. The tow company won't let the car go without it. Examples include a driver with no valid license, a car held for an investigation, or a car with no valid paid registration.
The CHP Stockton Communications Center is at 2720 Wilcox Road. The CHP lists it as open around the clock. Give your plate and the spot where the car broke down. Ask three things: was it stored or impounded, which tow company has it, and do you need a release.
What if the San Joaquin County Sheriff towed it?
A Sheriff tow takes one more stop. You get paperwork in French Camp before you go to the tow company.
- Call the Patrol Administrative Services Unit at (209) 468-4171 or (209) 468-4401. If deputies towed it, the Case Management Unit at (209) 468-4178 can help too.
- Go to the Sheriff's Office at 7000 Michael Canlis Blvd. in French Camp. The registered owner and one licensed driver both have to come.
- Pay the county release fee there. Bring a money order or cashier's check made out to San Joaquin County. Cash is not taken.
- Take the paperwork to the tow company. Pay the storage there and drive the car home.
The Sheriff's list of what to bring:
- Current registration from the DMV, or a red moving permit
- A current insurance card
- Picture ID for the registered owner
- A current driver's license
- The money order or cashier's check
Plan who is coming and how you'll get to French Camp before you leave.
What if Stockton Police towed it?
Call the non-emergency line at (209) 937-8377 and give your plate number. Ask which tow company has the car. Ask if you need a release from police before the yard will hand it over.
Some questions go to the Traffic Section at (209) 937-8355. It handles repossession releases, vehicle abatement and ticket payments. It keeps weekday business hours, closes for lunch and skips every other Friday. Call before you drive over.
If a store or apartment lot had the car removed, the tow still gets reported to police. Our guide to Stockton tow yards covers private lot signs and your rights at the yard.
What does the tow notice tell me?
For a public agency tow, California Vehicle Code section 22852 requires a storage notice. It goes to the registered owner no more than 48 hours after the tow, not counting weekends and holidays. It must say where the car is stored and which agency had it removed, and why.
That notice settles the question. Keep it. Your 10 days to ask for a hearing count from the date printed on it.
If the agency can't reach the owner, section 22853 has it report the tow to the state Department of Justice Stolen Vehicle System. If all three agencies say they have nothing, report the car stolen and ask the officer to check for a tow record.
Can Sentinel help once I have the release?
Sentinel doesn't do impounds, releases or yard pickups. Those go through the agency and the tow company. After the car is free, we can help if it won't start or can't be driven.
A car that sat in a Stockton yard for days may have a flat battery. Ask for a jump start at the gate. If it was towed after a crash, book a car tow to your home or a shop.
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network. A vetted local partner tow company does the job. We lock your price by text before anyone is sent, then check on you by text until your truck arrives. The Stay-With-You Promise spells out the terms. Our Stockton page covers the freeways and the communities nearby.

Stockton Towing Agency Questions
My car was towed off I-5 in Stockton. Who do I call?
Start with the CHP Stockton Communications Center at (209) 943-8600. Ask if the car was stored or impounded and which tow company has it. If the CHP has no record, call Stockton Police at (209) 937-8377.
Do I need a release to get my car from a CHP tow?
Only if it was impounded. A stored car comes straight from the tow company. An impounded car needs a release from the CHP office that ordered the tow.
Can I pay the Sheriff release fee in cash?
No. The Sheriff says no cash. Bring a money order or cashier's check made out to San Joaquin County to the French Camp office.
Can someone else pick up my car from a Sheriff tow?
The Sheriff says the registered owner must come with picture ID. One licensed driver must come too. If you own the car and have a valid license, call first and ask if you can go alone.
