An Arkansas Breakdown Depends on Where You Are
The state changes a lot between the Oklahoma line and the Mississippi River. So does the kind of trouble that leaves you on the shoulder.
- A tire goes flat on I-49 north of Alma, in Ozark country, where the road crosses large gorge bridges on the way to Fayetteville.
- Your car won't restart after a fuel stop on I-40 east of Little Rock, where the road runs long and straight with few exits.
- An ice storm glazes the highway south of Little Rock, the half of the state most apt to get ice storms.
- What's left of a Gulf storm dumps heavy rain in a short time, and water spreads across a low road ahead of you.
Each one has a fix. A partner can put on your spare with a flat tire change, pull you back onto the pavement with a winch-out after a slide, or tow the car to a nearby shop. You get the price by text before anyone heads your way.
The main roads
I-40 Ties the State Together
I-40 crosses the whole state, from Dora on the Oklahoma line to West Memphis. West of Little Rock it follows the old US 64 route through the Ozarks, past Clarksville, Russellville and Conway. East of the capital it tracks US 70 across open farmland to West Memphis, shares a short stretch with I-55, then crosses the river into Memphis.
I-49 breaks north from I-40 at Alma and climbs through the Ozarks to Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville. Just past the Crawford-Washington county line is the Bobby Hopper Tunnel, the only large highway tunnel in Arkansas. In the northeast, I-55 runs from the Memphis area up to Missouri, with a spur to Jonesboro.
Snow falls now and then, mostly in the northern half. The bigger threat is storms: thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes, since Arkansas sits in Dixie Alley.
Arkansas law
Just Move Over, Including for Tow Trucks
Arkansas Code 27-51-310 covers a stopped vehicle used in a towing operation, as long as it shows flashing, revolving or rotating lights. Police, emergency crews, ARDOT trucks and utility crews are covered too. Drivers coming up on one must move to the lane farthest from it until they're past. If that isn't possible, they must slow down and use caution. ARDOT explains it on its Just Move Over page.
My car slid off the road in the ice. Do I need a tow?
Maybe not. If it's stuck in a ditch or on the grass but not damaged, a winch-out may be enough to get you moving. Tell us what you see around the car, and stay inside with your belt on if traffic is close.
