What Actually Changes a Tow Price in Anchorage: Airport Lot or Eagle River

In Anchorage, the biggest thing that moves a tow price is distance: how far the truck drives to reach you, and how far it hauls your car. A dead car near Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, off International Airport Road, sits in the Bowl near plenty of shops. A breakdown out by Eagle River, about 12 miles north of downtown on the Glenn, is a longer job. Your vehicle, what broke and where it's parked come next.
Why does my spot in Anchorage matter so much?
A tow is two drives. First the truck comes to you. Then it carries your car to the drop spot. Every mile on both legs is part of the work.
Here's how the two ends of town compare:
- Near the airport. You're on the west side of the Bowl, close to Spenard and Jewel Lake. A shop in town is often a short haul.
- Out by Eagle River. Alaska DOT&PF puts Eagle River about 12 miles north of downtown. A truck from town covers that stretch to reach you, and maybe again to bring the car back.
So two drivers with the same dead battery can get different quotes. Nobody is being unfair. One job just has more road in it.
What if my car won't start in the airport lot?
You land after a week away. It's dark, it's cold and the car just clicks. This is one of the most common ways an Anchorage trip ends badly.
Start with what kind of help you need. A car that sat in the cold for days often needs only a jump start, not a tow. A jump is a smaller job than a haul across town. If it starts, keep it running and drive it straight to a shop or home.
When you call, say exactly where the car is. The airport has three main places to park:
- The short-term parking garage at the South Terminal.
- The short-term lot at the North Terminal.
- The long-term lot.
Give the lot, the row and the level. A garage can be tighter for a truck than an open lot. Clear details help the partner send the right truck the first time.
Questions about the lot itself, like a gate ticket or a stay that ran long, go to Republic Parking Services. The airport says they run its parking, at (907) 677-1074 or (907) 529-2577. Short-term stays max out at 15 days, and long-term at 90.
Can a tow truck haul my trailer out of the airport lot?
The airport says trailers and vehicles over 25 feet long are not allowed in any of its lots. Sentinel handles cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups only, so trailers are outside what we do either way.
What if I break down on International Airport Road?
Don't plan on leaving the car there. The airport says parking along International Airport Road is strictly prohibited. It has also ended curbside waiting at the terminals, because the backup was blocking the emergency lane.
If the car still rolls, get off the road. The airport points drivers to a free Cell Phone Lot. Heading west on International Airport Road, just past the Jewel Lake and Spenard intersection, take the first right at the Aviation Avenue exit. Follow the signs. The lot sits in part of the DOT&PF Central Region headquarters parking lot.
A car in a calm, flat lot is easier to load than one on a busy shoulder. If the car won't move and you're in a live lane, turn on your hazards and call 911 first.
What makes a tow from Eagle River different?
DOT&PF says Eagle River meets the Glenn Highway at three interchanges: Hiland Road, Artillery Road and North Eagle River. Hiland Road leads to Eagle River Loop. Artillery Road leads to the town's business district.
Use those names when you call. "Southbound Glenn, just past the Artillery Road exit" tells your driver a lot. "Somewhere near Eagle River" does not.
Timing can matter too. DOT&PF says the Glenn carries commuters from the Mat-Su and Eagle River into Anchorage, and it backs up at peak hours. A truck stuck in that traffic covers the same miles more slowly.
The biggest choice is where the car goes. If you live in Eagle River and the car breaks down there, a shop in Eagle River keeps the haul short. Towing it into the Bowl adds that 12 mile run. Ask yourself whether the car really needs to come into town.
What else goes into the price?
Distance is the big one. These come next:
- Your vehicle. A compact sedan loads differently than an all-wheel-drive SUV or a light pickup.
- What went wrong. A car that rolls and steers is quick to load. A locked wheel or crash damage takes more work.
- Where it sits. A plowed lot is simple. A car in a ditch off the Glenn may need a winch-out before it can be towed.
- The fix on the spot. Some calls end with a jump or a spare tire. Others need a car tow to a shop.
Describe the problem plainly. "It cranks but won't fire." "It made a grinding sound, then quit." That helps the partner quote the job you actually have.
Where should I send the car?
Pick the drop spot before you call. It's the part of the price you control most.
| Where you broke down | Shorter haul | Longer haul |
|---|---|---|
| Airport lot or International Airport Road | A shop in the Bowl | Home in Eagle River or Chugiak |
| Glenn Highway near Eagle River | A shop in Eagle River | A shop near the airport |
DOT&PF's own driving route shows why the long version adds up. From the Glenn, you follow it into 5th Avenue downtown. Then L Street, which turns into Minnesota Drive. Then International Airport Road. That's the whole city, end to end.
How do I get home once the car is towed?
Ride along in the truck when it's safe and allowed. If not, plan a ride. From the airport, the airport says People Mover Routes 40 and 65 run to downtown or the Dimond Center. To Eagle River, People Mover Route 92 runs from the Downtown Transit Center to the Eagle River Transit Center. Its posted schedule lists weekday trips only, so a Saturday breakdown needs another plan.
How does Sentinel set your price?
Sentinel Towing is a towing and roadside network, not a tow company. A vetted local partner near you does the work. Before we dispatch, you get your price by text, and that locked price is the most you pay for the job. If the job changes, we text a new price and you decide. While you wait, we keep checking on you by text, and you can track your truck on a map. That's the Stay-With-You Promise. For the roads and areas partners cover, see our Anchorage towing page.
While you wait on the Glenn, Alaska's move-over law, AS 28.35.185, protects your driver during hookup. It doesn't protect you on the shoulder. Stay buckled in with your hazards on, or get well away from traffic. Check Alaska 511 for closures before you head out.

Anchorage Tow Price Questions
Why did a tow from Eagle River get a different price than one near the airport?
Distance. Eagle River is about 12 miles north of downtown, so the truck often drives farther to reach you. Where the car goes matters just as much. A shop close by keeps the haul short.
My car died in the airport long-term lot. Do I need a tow?
Maybe not. A car that sat in the cold often just needs a jump. Tell us the lot, row and level. If it won't start after a jump, we text you a tow price before anyone is sent.
Can I leave my broken car on International Airport Road and come back later?
No. The airport says parking along International Airport Road is strictly prohibited. Move the car off the road if it rolls. If you're stuck in a live lane, call 911 first.
Can you tow my car from Eagle River to Wasilla?
Sentinel does local tows only. Whether a trip toward the Mat-Su works depends on the partner near you and the distance. Ask on the call, and you'll get a yes or no before anything is booked.
